oh man i know its not for everyone but this is the exact kind of sound im looking for, love the dark and warm tone, definitely gonna get a set of flat!!
yeah, I still have a set of these on my acoustic. we'll probably end up going back with the Martin monel's but these are okay. I like the sound and play bility, but hate the look in the bronze taste on the fingers lol
this string sounds really nice. i love that dark, calm characteristic. this is what i've been looking for since a long time, thanks for making this video 🙏🏼
You're very welcome. Glad someone finds this helpful :-) now, if only Martin would make a flat ground version of their Retro strings, that would be perfect!
Apparently, Nick Drake strung his guitar up with nickel strings and played them until they turned black. Flatwounds are definitely a good shortcut if you don't have the time to play a set of strings for that long.
Thanks for posting. After 60 years of playing I have just fitted some D'Addario Flat tops. 10-47. mmm And I agree with you . for some reason those feel tighter tension as well? So much so I detuned to D with a Capo on 2nd fret and that feels great altho not as much body . I tried to get the Magma 10-42 from the US but they do not make that set anymore. However I will persevere. Nice playing by the way! Cheers. Christmas day here and I subscribed!
31/May/2022: I just bought a set for $16.98 of Magma flat wounds 11-52 and they are killing my fingers with pain. Yes, they do sound different and slightly duller. And, yes to get the string ends to stay down in the bridge, I used a tiny bit of Elmer's glue ... crazy right? But, no lasting harm was done. I also found on eBay Magma Acoustic Guitar Strings Light Gauge FLAT Phosphor Bronze Set, 10-48 for $16.98. I will try them next, and maybe they will not be so painful on my fingers. Magma strings are pricy, but I hate the squeak. I also used Elixir Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze Extra Light 10-47 Acoustic Guitar Strings for $15.99 (not flat wound, but coated). I have used these strings and the squeak is minimal, but also a little dull-sounding (less than Magma). And, they do not hurt my fingers at this gauge range. The other brands of strings that are not flat wound and have no coating are brighter, but they will squeak and they will notch your frets faster. A lot to think about here. I recommend finding the string gauge range you are comfortable with first, then try different strings.
It’s because of the hex core these have which makes them feel stiff. Try Dogal Nightclub Flatwounds. They are round wound so they don’t feel as stiff and are so much better. Downside is they are twice price but the Dogals are the best flatwound acoustic strings.
You must really have a great preference for your guitar tone. I just started using flatwounds during the holidays, but I didn’t string my acoustic guitar with flatwounds until after the New Year.
Dogal Makes 80/20 Bronze Flatwound Strings. If you use Power Pins the strings will hold better. Dogal V24 Medium Tension Flatwounds feel rather buttery & they feature a Wound 2nd String that acts as a transitional String between the Bass & Treble.
Man those sound so good I have a j-45 style clone and it’s all new wood so it’s super bright but also very tight because of the new-ness of the guitar I feel those would work well on there
@@adrianmottram1820 thanks so much! It was standard, but I have a capo on backwards on the second fret leaving the bottom E strong open. I do this all the time
I have D'Addario flat wounds on my Larrivee D40 now. Actually they sound and play pretty well but like the Magma are a little pricy. They perform well on reducing the squeaks, which is good when recording. However the jury is still out on live performances. Has anyone done a comparison on acoustic flat wounds?
You can hear the zingy harsh highs my guitar produces in this video I'm hoping these string might calm down the treble th-cam.com/video/71pOiOK8byc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=K9r0eB3qCBALh-VE
Did you notice any weird buzzing when you initially put the flatwounds on? I tried switching from round wounds to flat wounds and heard a bit of buzzing/rattling noises. I’m not sure where it was resonating from., possibly the bridge or saddle needing filing.., not sure though…
I have been using flat wounds on my 335 for over a year. I have never seen them look "dirty" at all and I know how flat wounds would collect MORE dirt at all as they are far less apt to collect dirt as they are smooth. Thanks for the video but I just do not understand that statement at all.
You will have to adjust your stumming style to be a bit "softer" instead of trying to make hem sound like regular strings by hitting them hard. Enjoy the smooth touch and sound of the string!...
I’ve only played flatwounds on my tele for years now. I can’t stand squeak on guitars, it’s just horrendous. When I get an acoustic soon, those nasty Roundwounds will be replaced on day one.
I would for sure say give them a try. In the end, I ended up going back to regular nickel strings. I thought the sound ended up being mediocre after a short time, and I'm probably happier than ever with the D'addario nickel bronze strings.

If you use the 10 Gauge set, that might help a bit better cause the tension is lower.
I think I'll try flat wound, thanks for the video. I like your style of music sounds soothing yet lively and exciting.
Wow, thanks so much, Antwan!! Let me know how they turn out.
Thanks so much for your helpful video. This type of string is what I've been looking for.
@@davidnollmusic363 oh, excellent!! So glad you found it helpful :)
Instant Nick Drake finger picking tone.

@@NZbluesky fantastic news!! Merry Christmas indeed.
You can even put these strings on an Acoustic Archtop Guitar so that it gains you a slick Jazz feel & keeping the Phosphor Bronze material.

interesting. I have never heard of Dogal, but sounds like a cool set of strings!
@@SteveWoodyMusic The Magma Phosphor Bronze Flatwounds come in various gauges. I find that w/ Power Pins, it'll work better.
The 10 Gauge set might give you a bit more brightness.
Oh, thanks for that observation. I've moved on to the D'addario nickel bronze strings and am pretty happy with them at this point.
@@SteveWoodyMusic Maybe you should try the Magma Flatwound Phosphor Bronze Strings again someday cause the eliminated finger squeak is great.
@@SteveWoodyMusic What if D'Addario made Flatwound versions of Nickel Bronze Strings called "Nickel Bronze Flats"?
The Guitar sounds nice in that room though with those strings very beautiful and soft

i usually use markley but i have two ww2 archtops and am shopping around for replacement flatwounds 😅
beatles used flatwounds & bright vox amps 🎉
Very cool! I haven't tried flatwounds on electric yet.
Just ordered some I'll give it a go brother

they do sound a little muffled but im still gonna try them

Yeah, I don't get how they looked dirty. Just very corroded looking straight out of the pack.

Yeah, I moved on from these shortly after buying them. Much prefer the D'Addario nickel bronze

Magma in a company from Argentina, my country. Here, the Magma products are very cheap.
very cool. do you view them as low-end products, or good products?

These strings are ground wound, not true flat "ribbon" wound like D'Addario Chromes. I don't like the grippy/sticky feel of ground wounds.
Yeah, I totally agree and am no longer using these strings.

Confused. I said corrosion lol
Dull? That's why the call them flat wounds!
LOL.!!
