OTTO Electric Pressure Cooker PC-225 Review from Thailand -- in English!

  • I was interested in replacing my broken crock pot here in Thailand and decided to see if there was some cheaper version of the Instant Pot available here. Sure enough! The OTTO PC-225 Electric Pressure Cooker will do the job. It has NONE of the bells and whistles of an elecTRONIC pressure cooker like the Instant Pot, but it will cook food beautifully if you know how to do it. Just google any type of recipe for an Instant Pot. The only thing I don't recommend doing in this pot is sauteing. Otherwise, if you need to pressure cook something for 9 minutes with certain ingredients and for a certain amount of time, this will do the trick! Available at www.lazada.com

    The photo on the lid of the pressure release valve actually shows it should be turned 90 degrees from the way you show it. So when you are facing the temperature dial the tab on the pressure release valve should be pointing away from you not towards the handle the way you describe. The tab can be turned left or right to release the seal and lifted with a chopstick to release the pressure. Hope this helps.

      Thanks for that. I only have directions in Thai and I don't speak or read Thai.

    Really useful. I am in thailand and followed the exact same thinking as you. First, SHOCKED to see the absurd prices that they were asking here for an Insta pot. Then going - oh - there are chinese equivalents - IF you read chinese... and then - wow - there is OTTO. I have owned OTTO appliances before. Its not Kitchenaid or Cuisinard, but its actually fantastic value. Kinda like having a Toyota in the kitchen.

    Hi. I'm in Thailand and have bought this specifically for cooking dried beans and pulses in. It's my first pressure cooker of any kind. I'm confused by the pressure release valve, what position should it be in, it has no markings whatsoever that I can see. If anyone can offer a brief rundown on the various positions etc . I'd very much appreciate it. Thank you.

    Hi, can you tell me how to saute using this pressure cooker? Also if a recipe says to put on high or medium heat where do I put the dial? I'm new at this and it seems like this pressure cooker is kinda like an Instant pot????? Thanks.

    Has anybody tried cooking beef in this? How was it? How long did it take for you to get it tender? Thanks in advance. 🙏

    Where do you have the pressure valve set to for cooking, towards the handle? I live I Chiangmai and bought this some time ago after watching this video. I have used it many many times but I think I have had the pressure valve set in the wrong position set away from me always hissing when I cook, I take it that is incorrect?

      As I've just discovered and re-confirmed with Technician of the Brand OTTO's Call Center, the directions of "Seal" (required for cooking) VS "Vent"(required for pressure releasing) are not standard for all items. Once the cooker has been started at "a position" of the valve, the cooker is in "Heating" mode. After a moment of heating up the pot, if you found steam(and hissing sound) coming out of the valve, this does mean that "that position" (of your own item) was in the "Vent" position. So you should use long-shaped utensils (like a chopstick) to turn the valve around to the new major position....the right position of "Seal" should have no steam (and hissing sound) coming out during cooking time (Red/Green). So, you are able to realize the position you want for the next time.

    So if an instant pot recipe says 10 minutes we'll need to cook it in this pot for around 13-14 minutes (real world time)?

    Thanks for the video. Difficult to find videos in English in Thailand. I bought it and have been surprised at the things that I have managed to cook. Thanks for the pork recipe too. It was so yummy! 😉

    I think the reason you have to cook longer is the time doesn't start till it reaches pressure on the InstantPot. Thanks, for 30 bucks I'll pick up one of these for my place in Thailand.

    Thank you for this. I’m an instant pot fan, now living in Thailand and missing my gadget! I understand that this one doesn’t have a saute function, but will it heat without the lid on so that I can saute? Or does it only heat up when the lid is on? Thanks for any advice!

      @@bh2o I think it is because normal Instant Pots have a pressure build up before cooking time starts so their recipe only count the time once pressure has built. I think the cooking time is exactly the same as Instant Pot but you have to add the pressure build up time into your timer.

    Thx for the video. Have just got mine few days ago. Been used it first time today. Curious on function-light keep switching between Heating (red) and Warm (green) during operation time... I thought this was malfunction or defect on my received item. After watching this video, I've realized this is only NORMAL operation of the product. So, worries are gone. The product is good.

    I just bought the same one, and it appears that you can use it to brown before the pressure cooking part, with the lid off - though I suspect you'd want to keep an eye on it and not give it a chance to overheat. For 960 baht, you can't really go wrong. The only thing missing was a basket for the inside - to raise some items, like say potatoes off the floor and out of the water, so they only get steamed, not boiled. Of course, Lazada has 200 or so cheap options for this, so 150 baht sort out this little problem after an hour of trying to make up your mind.
    Really good value, and my other Otto stuff has held up very well, so it is a non-glamorous "name brand" - maybe not so much Toyota as Isuzu.

      Your the most recent post before mine, so maybe you can advise me about the pressure relief valve as per my comment/request for help. Many thanks 🙂

      I had NO luck with the OTTO 60L oven. The 1st one worked a/b a year.... not too bad all things considered. I took it to get "fixed" but typically it was not. Waste of time taking it to the repair guy again. TIT eh!! The second one from Lazada lasted two days. I sent it back and got a full refund.

    Hi! I just received the OTTO pressure cooker this week and I’m struggling to use it so this video was extremely helpful. But I am still confused about the pressure valve if it should be turned toward the handle or toward the pin lock? There are no markings to indicate where it should go. I really want to cook wild rice and I am wondering if anybody has had success doing this and if so what was the ratio rice:liquid you used? There’s no rice setting so I’m wondering if it will work OK?

    • @csabo1725
      @csabo1725 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neither. When you face the pot the little tab should be pointing away from you to 12 o'clock. You can turn it to the 9 or 3 o'clock position to release the pressure

    Is this Otto PC-225 heavy? I've been looking at various stores here in Thailand for a pressure cooker, and some of them (not necessarily electric) are extremely heavy. I have rheumatoid arthritis and have a lot of trouble with picking things up and the ones I saw were way too heavy for me to handle.

    • @rmiyakawa
      @rmiyakawa  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it's excessively heavy. It's not a crockpot...those can be heavy! This isn't much heavier than a rice cooker.

    Thank you for the very informative video. I live in Chiang Mai and also just recently purchased this electric pressure cooker from Lazada. Do you have any more recipes to share on youtube?

    • @rmiyakawa
      @rmiyakawa  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry....no more recipes with that cooker. However, I found it very easy to adapt "Instant Pot" recipes that are on the internet. Basically, if the recipe simply calls for adding ingredients, pressure cooking for a certain number of minutes, then either doing a quick release or a natural release, you can do it with this pot.
