Thanks for the video, we were walking the walls in Lucca that night looking for shooting stars too, and we didn't see any either. I would love to go up the tower but have only made it to the first big room and when I saw the stairs perched on the walls I thought I can't do it! I'm scared of heights and imagined I'd be okay but I wasn't so I waited while my husband went on without me, he took loads of photos to show me the fantastic views.Watching your virtual view video now shows me I was right in staying where I was that day. Thankyou for showing us the views on a special night

It does get a little scary when you can see through the metal stairs especially when trying to film1

@@PiazzaTalkLucca I can believe that, it looks very narrow in places too!

The church opposite me in Ludlow has a climeable tower of 135 feet (41.2 m therefore lower than Lucca's) which I have only ever climbed once and that will suffice as will the climbing with you and getting a little dizzy as I did whilst viewing the video, will now suffice for Lucca. I shall soon convince myself I managed it. One forgets sometimes that the mountains are not far away to the north. How different life is in mountain villages when compared with that in the provincial capital. Part of the wonder of the area and of wider Italy. Thanks for the night climb and all done without a sound.

Hugh, I am glad we have saved you from the fatigue of climbing the tower, the panorama is spectacular and it was a first for us to see the city by night from that standpoint. The countryside, however, is a much better prospect for seeing the falling stars.

Bellissima, c'era un bel fresco lassù in cima il 10 agosto.

Quite some climb but so worth it! We were there the previous day and the views are wonderful. So different and beautiful at night. Hope to return to Lucca next year and spend a few days there. ❤

There are other towers to climb, but this is the only one remaining that is part of a domestic residence.

I love being able to explore historic sites such as giungi tower. My mind wonders and daydreams of how the family lived in this tower centuries ago! There's skeletons of certain architectural features but where were their bedrooms, where did they relax or eat ? So amazing at night !
    Thank you for posting !

The Guinigi family lived above the shop. The ground floor was the commercial premisses and then the family lived above. The kitchen and servants quarters where on the top floors. Opposite the tower is another Palazzo with the family crest and I am told the family moved there when the rush matting needed to be changed. To have an idea of how it all worked for a merchant's family, there is a museum in Florence Palazzo Davanzati where one can see the everyday life of a Renaissance family with all the details and original rooms and objects.

I’m curious to see what’s behind those green doors, have you ever been the other side of them? I’ve past the tower many times but never been in,, quite different to how I imagined it would be. Another interesting insightful video with enjoyable historical story telling as always 👏👍

There are rooms which are sometimes used for exhibitions. A friend who was an art student many years ago was put up in the Torre Guinigi, but those days have long gone.

Great to see the view at night, we have been up a few times, but only in the day, so special.
We are there in two weeks…I guess it will be too much to hope it will be open in the evening again .
Thanks for the video, Take Care.

Thank you for watching the video. The night opening used to be a rare event but they've done it twice in August so maybe they're planning new openings? During the Settembre Lucchese a lot of traditional events are happening and it would be a great idea to open the towers at night. Saluti.

Fa quasi freddo ora e piove a Lucca.

Having visited this tower in June, can you please explain WHERE & HOW all the red clay bricks came from. Just looking at the wall around the Historic Center, there must be well beyond a million bricks in that wall structure. There must have been "brick factories" everywhere" !
The amount of red clay bricks in that city is staggering.

    • @PiazzaTalkLucca
      @PiazzaTalkLucca  ปีที่แล้ว +1

These bricks were all handmade and there were certainly small furnaces everywhere. A few years ago we bought handmade roof tiles from the same company that made the tiles for Duomo in Florence five centuries ago. The wonderful thing about Italy is that many of these skills still exist and are practised, long may it continue.

What an amazing video. I have been up the tower many times but only during the day. It is much more dramatic at night !! Years ago there were no bars on the windows so the aspect was quite different. Xx

    Lovely views of Lucca.
I do not like the metal stairs and that climb to the top takes the "romantic" right out of the picture!!! lol
How do they keep the trees from invading the structure and/or blowing over?

    • @PiazzaTalkLucca

They are in built-up beds and are continually monitored but I often wonder myself and need to find someone with the answer.
