- There was one group in the R&B Soul/Doo Woo genres that epitomized what a real singing group was back in the day...The Mighty Dells from Harvey Illinois. For those who are fans of The Mighty Dells, we miss them and their soulful music that started in 1953 and continued until 2012. The passing of lead singer Marvin Junior, falsetto/lead singer Johnny Carter and bass singer Chuck Barksdale starting in 2009 ended the group's reign. These men, along with Verne Allison and Michael McGill, performed together creating hits in 5 decades. With hits like "Stay In My Corner", "Love Is So Simple", "Oh What A Nite", "A Heart Is A House For Love", "Wichita Lineman", "I Can Sing A Rainbow-Love Is Blue" and "Open Up My Heart", the group will live on as long as those who loved them remain. Most don't know that their biggest hit "Stay In My Corner", was originally released in 1965 and it peaked at #25 on the Billboard R&B Chart. They re-released the song in a new version in 1968 which is the one we all know, and it peaked at #10 on the Billboard Pop Chart and #1 on the Billboard R&B Chart. The Mighty Dells were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 and Johnny Carter was also inducted again that year into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a former member of The Flamingos. The group was one of only two groups with hits in five decades. I grew up with The Mighty Dells' music in the 60's so when I had the opportunity to meet them in the 90's, I was on cloud nine. I videotaped the group during the Ben E. King Celebrity Golf Tournament in 2003 and Chuck Barksdale was absolutely hilarious. I will post those videos in the near future. I began to videotape some of their performances when they came to DC in the 90's and 2000's and this 1998 video was one of the last opportunities I got to record them. They were up in years but their showmanship performance of their timeless hits never wavered. Enjoy and thanks for being a Dells fan.

I grew up listening to the dells back in Jr high school in the late 60s well if it wasn't for my 2 older sisters I wouldn't have known of the Dells the rest is history a true fan
Marvin and the Dell's, one of the GREATEST group's of all times WHO, never received the recognition they deserved!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍
My 13 year old son and I heard and saw the last Dells concert performance in Cleveland in 2003. I grew up idolizing the Dells as a teenager in the 60's. They did the whole songbook. My son knew all the words from listening to the albums/CDs my wife and I played around the house. Those sitting nearby were blown away and we all had a great time. The Dells are something that comes along once in a lifetime. I miss them so much.
The MIGHTY DELLS are one of if not the “GREATEST VOCAL GROUPS” OF ALL TIME .!!!!!🎼🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎼
Agreed!!!
Lovely
That’s it, we’ll settle this once and for all. After watching this concert, there is not a group then or now that can touch this amazing amazing group. These Brothers are untouchable. They are the number one group of all time, bar none. It’s not even close. They are second to none. Who the hell does it like the Dells. RIP to Marvin Jr and Johnny.
Let’s not forget Chuck Barksdale. He’s singing bass in Heaven.
The mighty Dells awesome male Singing group ❤.

35:55 👍🏾💙 Who else gives this a thumbs up.This is when music was music. There will never be music like in the days of old.Miss those years. The time in those years are gone but will never be forgotten.Thank you for the memories.❤
You’re welcome. I still can’t believe I got the opportunity to photograph, videotape and play golf with these icons over the years. My first slow dance was to “Stay In My Corner” in 1968 when I was 19. The song was released earlier on VeeJay Records in 1965 but when they signed with Chess Records, they re-recorded the hit and it went to #1 on the R&B Charts for 3 weeks and #10 on the pop charts.
Marvin's powerful voice never fails ❤
" Love is so simple"❤
No one can bring it like Marvin Junior!
Thank you Jesus..... I just found this. May 2024. I Just Love These Guys. The Mighty Dells. Heaven is Rocking right now.

Gone but not forgotten
Authentic,no gimmicks...Ya heard!!
Thank you for sharing, Marvin Junior's daughter, LaTanya Junior
You are so welcome. ❤. I was a senior in high school when “Stay In My Corner” hit. It was my real first slow dance record. I dreamed of meeting your dad one day as a photographer and that came true. I got to meet all of the members and tape their performances several times between 1990 and 2001. I will be posting their 1990 show in DC at the Carter Baron Amphitheater in DC soon. The best show ever. DC loved the Mighty Dells and packed the house every time they came to town. I got to play several rounds of golf with Marvin Junior, Jr. and Tico as well. I miss them. Happy New Year to you and yours.🎉
Harvey Illinois finest Thornton Township High School's finest
Be well, Latanya! Hope you are doing good ❤
LaTanya, do you sing as well?
I was in 9th grade at a school dance when I heard of them in 1969
MARVIN JR. STILL HAD HIS PIPES !
Thank you for posting. I truly miss this group. A real class ACT.
Thanks for posting this Ronald Gilbert Baker. Brings back many memories. These Dells were the first live band performance of a famous group I had ever seen and to say the least I was blown away by their sounding just like their recordings. I was in high school around 1968 or so. They came to the Tuskegee Institute (now University) Alabama campus and the cost of admission was $5.00!
I had a bass voice so I always admired and wanted to be like Chuck Barksdale (LOL), probably my favorite bass of all the R and B groups. Wish I could have been there to see this but this video was the next best thing. THANKS!!
Thanks for posting, one of the all-time great groups!
You’re welcome. There will never be another group like them. After nearly 60 years together, only the deaths of Marvin Junior, Chuck Barksdale and Johnny Carter ended their run. I was blessed to know and record them.
SUPERGROUP !!!!
Thank you for posting
You're welcome. My teen years with “Stay In My Corner” remain a fresh memory even though I’m 74 now. To get to video tape them on several occasions and play golf with Marvin Junior, Jr. and Tico was a dream come true for me.
I was chief Pilot for James Brown “The Godfather of soul Mr. Dynamite.!” 🧨 it seems like we toured constantly we have four pilots, two on duty and two on reserve. We had done a nine day tour through New York Jersey, Connecticut, and back down to Long Island. The Dells were playing the Apollo, and I suggested to Mr. Brown we should go catch that show incognito! He called the Apollo from the hotel, and made arrangements that we would set up in the box where HE would not be RECOGNIZED! Mr. Brown wore a three-piece businessman suit, and we came in through the entrance, and waited, and the Dells took the stage! I could see that Mr. Brown thoroughly enjoyed himself that night, and I became a big dells fan! We left about 10 minutes before the show was over, and nobody recognized him as we were leaving either. That was something I will never forget! Looking over at Mr. Brown’s face and seeing how much he thoroughly enjoyed the Dells!

Teddy Pendergrass said he was inspired by Marvin’s great singing.
Teddy,Levi,d Edwards,Eddie levert,etc all followed in Marvin Jr's footsteps.
Teddy P used to call Marvin his father cause of his strong voice. Marvin Junior's nickname was Iron Throat.
@@trevorlintott598 Teddy’s main inspiration was Marvin Jr. of The Dells.
The affair was gaye not marvin junior
@@AnthonyHarris-wm8oz Sorry, I’ve deleted that comment I stupidly forgot I was talking about Marvin of the Dells not Marvin Gaye in my first comment. 😂 Yes you are right Teddy had an affair with Marvin Gaye’s wife and they fell out. Sadly Janis Hunter Gaye died a couple of years ago.
Now I can see where Teddy Pendegrass got his inspiration from
Best gangster
