The HIV/AIDs is treated in media is so annoying. Besides the PSAs of the 80s-90s, it usually falls into 2 categories. Used as a punishment for someone for someone with a demonized sexuslity(women, sex workers, queer golks). Or as shock tragedy. The later is so annoying especially considering how dated it is. Back in the day it really was considered a death sentence but these days you can still live a fulfilling life with HIV so it irritates me that people still use a character dying of aids for shock value. Especially queer people.

YOO THANK YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT TEMPTATION!!! I’ve YET to see any other TH-camrs talk about this movie!! I’m also glad to know I’m not the only one that HATES Harley. He was giving MAJOR creeper vibes..
7:27 - 7:35 This too, when I saw the ending (back to the very 1st time of me watching the movie), I was just left speechless. Cause while I get that yeah, Judith shouldn’t have cheated, it STILL DOESN’T EXCUSE the fact that Brice wasn’t giving her enough attention/ love in the relationship.
What I also didn’t like, is that we don’t know what happened to Harley. I brought this point up to my friend. That after the Brice vs. Harley scene, it just cuts to the end. But am I the only one wondering what happened to him? Like did he get arrested? (It’s a crime to go around willingly spreading HIV/ STDs, etc), or did he just decided to move on..? The ending was rushed. And we DEFINITELY at least should’ve gotten at least a scene/ snippet or better yet, have Judith explain what happened to him.

    Thanks for making this video!
That ending was something else! The changing the actress was such a weird move
Using hiv as a punishment and making her out to be unredeemable
    Yikes

Shock value being prioritized over humanization and compassion is such an awful but commonly relied on trope. I hate a lot of approaches to social taboos in media specifically because of how they profit off the stigma while reinforcing the "moral punishment" angle. Like anyone else, people with stds can live very complicated lives, but it's suspicious when every depiction is something that ends so terribly.

😭silent subscriber here. I clicked on this video SO FAST bc the manga snippet in the thumbnail unlocked a memory in my brain, and I needed to know what the connection was to Tyler Perry LOL. I double-checked and I did read Deep Love as a CHILD 😅 and i remember it scarred me as it had a follow up manga about the dog that the protagonist Ayu takes care of. I didn’t expect to hear about topic at all and now i’m reeling from other examples in media stigmatizing and demonizing those diagnosed with STDs

If you ever need some more resources on that topic, we should definitely talk at some point. I've already done some research on this exact topic especially on Tyler Perry.
A lot of the rhetoric around the height of the AIDS epidemic being in the media focus sold this idea that only certain people, "high risk" people need to worry about catching it. It's not unlike how Covid is still around now but ignored as just "only high risk people need to worry about it at this point" when in reality it's dangerous to everyone regardless of your health history.
In particular, it was frequently stigmatizing toward several different LGBTQ people to the point of inciting panic and warning straight women about the dangerous of getting it from dirty bisexual men, and plays into a lot of biphobic stigma in how bisexual people are just seen as infected even by virtue of being "gay essentially." It overlooks the testing that was conducted at the time and the structural neglect and pathologizing done by the state to essentially use HIV/AIDs as a eugenics tool that disproportionately would affect not just the LGBTQ population but also the Black population as well.
That's why it's so alarming in how women in particular are reaffirmed on purity culture ideas like "if you have any kind of sexual agency you will get a STD and it'll be your fault for not being virtuous enough." It's a mixture of misogynoir, ableism, and queerphobia in how it's presented in media. So with this discussion of slut shaming and controlling women's sexual activity also has to come the notions of how women are blamed for not discerning who is the dirty gay/bi man and who is the "clean" man.
Even the way we describe someone who tests negative for a STD as "clean" is stigmatizing language that imagines people with STIs as inherently dirty people and contributes to the idea that they did something to deserve it.
Tyler Perry has even done that exact character with the predatory, lustful gay man unable to control himself before too.
There are some big counternarratives around HIV/AIDs at the time. A Different World is one that comes to mind, and even in that episode some of their jokes still reinforce the same kind of ideas about stigmatizing peoples sexual activity. In particular one of the jokes about how the one dude who is a loser guy who hasn't gotten to have sex is "safe" and they basically laugh at him for the sexless virgin trope, which doesn't examine how pushing this idea that men in particular need to be sexually active conquerors to be seen as real men contributes to the problem as well.
Tyler Perry also did an adaption of For Colored Girls which added in another storyline in its rerelease years later discussing HIV/AIDs from the perspective of a woman who got it from her husband. I don't think the story should have been added and Tyler Perry doesn't make the story any better. If anything he proliferated that meme of that woman asking her man "were you the one doing the bending?"
It does the same thing where it doesn't examine this any more deeply and tries to discuss the feelings of internalized homophobia or biphobia to an extent but it doesn't do anything beyond seeing disability as a moral judgment inflicted upon people.
I have like...a million problems with Whoopi Goldberg, but she's one of the big parties to push for some of the better HIV/AIDS narratives we saw come out of the 1990s, such as the HIV episode of a different world and the way Captain Planet addressed mis and disinformation about public health surrounding HIV.
It also contributes to who bothers testing in the first place and why people avoid getting tested or see it as you not trusting your partner. You take testing seriously because you love and care about them while recognizing that they didn't do something to "deserve" contracting a STI if they do.

Gurl I thought I was the only one who liked Judith. I remember watching this movie with my auntie when I was a kid and I was cracking up. I know she was trifling but there's just something so charismatic about Jurnee Smollett. She made Judith so funny and paired with Brice's angry lip quiver...it was hilarious. I'm sorry there's just something deeply unserious about this movie.
But real talk the movie was so frustrating. Tho Judith was dead wrong she tried to work things out with Brice time and time again yet he ignored her till she started cheated. It irritated me how she was the only one who was held accountable because her infidelity wasn't the only problem in their relationship. And Judith's "punishment" irritated me aswell. It felt less like "cheating is bad and being reckless can risk your health" and more like "this is the price you pay for not putting up with his mess. If he don't cheat, there's no reason to be dissatisfied." Tho Brice didn't deserve to get cheated on I'm still tryna figure out what did he do make him deserving of happy ending. He was shown to be unwilling to communicate, reassure or be attentive to his partner so as a reward for his unwilling to make a relationship work is a new relationship??? Also what is it with Tyler perry and making relationships the reward. The grand all be all. Like it's understandable that Jurnee lost Brice over her behavior but being single don't gotta be miserable. In his movies the Jazebel gets punished by being without a man, and the abusive men tend to get redemption...like why???

Okay just wanted to get this off my chest rn:
I always loved how you voiced your concerns/displeasure regarding women in the sex work business and just sexually secure women in general.
And as someone who has had big gripes with Tyler Perry's movies, this was cathartic to say the least
Also also I see you're improving with your art! It looks amazing!

I used to think the ending was fitting. But now that I look back on it, well... it's very Tyler Perry. I don't think Bryce was a bad guy, but he wasn't really supporting her like that. She needed more. The only thing I hated was the way she handled it.
Now the movie feels like when I look back on it, feels like a cautionary tale less in the sense of "Don't cheat or you catch HIV". It's more "Don't try to run from the difficult conversations needed to have in your relationship." And not just in the sense of the relationship needing to end, but showing that you need to give more in the relationship, don't fall into a comfortable loop.
Love ur megan x toji art also.

Hello. I hope all is well with you. You're inspirational. Thank you for continuing your work and lending your much needed voice and gifts in this space. In light of the recent announcement of Zendaya's engagement announcement, I'd like to know your thoughts on single moms and the harsh ridicule they receive. I believe there are constructive ways to have conversations about single motherhood without condemning young and older women to a hard life and for being undesirable after bearing a child out of wedlock. How does one going with their lives and be their best if everyone's foot is on their necks? Some want to play God and determine who get forgiveness and who must pay for their indiscretions.
