    Made my first travelers notebook insert with Iroful paper today. It’s pretty much perfection. I love it.
    By the time I make 10 inserts I’ve spent just over a dollar an insert and I’m writing on fantastic paper. Really hard to beat.
    I don’t know why the new 52gsm Tomoe River paper gets so much love. It’s unworkable in a notebook context. The 68gsm Tomoe paper that Goulet pens uses is nice but is a lot like Midori paper in that it doesn’t show off my inks all that well. And it totally loses that smooth Tomoe River feel in the process.

      That is awesome!
      Tomoe River is a great performing paper, especially for its weight. For showing off ink though I do think Cosmo Air Light and Iroful are better.

    Glad you did a review on this. I heard of it and saw it online and wondered about it. Also glad I could get a copy of your Cosmo Air Light notebook to try before it was all gone as I had never tried it before.

      Thank you! It's quite a nice paper. I hoping to do something with it at the Paper Mind. Either a notepad or notebook of some kind.

      @@BlakesBroadcastI personally love Notepads top glue the best. Give you the option to keep it in there or tear it out clean if you want plus top bound is the most ideal for writing I feel like for everyone even lefties. I'm sure they will be great whatever you end up choosing!

    Your reviews are invariably spot on thank you for your observations and insights! have you ever thought of reviewing past limited edition pens from the golden age (1990's - 2010 IMHO)? I think what made pens of this period great was the lavish use of precious metals, celluloid, elaborate packaging/paphlets that enhanced the theme of the pen, etc. Think of Montegrappa Dragon, Omas limited pens, Stipula Academia series, Michel Perchin pens, early Montblanc Patron pens that actually used sterling silver mountings, etc.

    • @BlakesBroadcast
      @BlakesBroadcast  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven't heard of that period referred to as the golden age but I think you are right in a sense. A lot of those pens are quite pricey.
      My dad has a David Oscarson which I would like to borrow for a review at some point. I don't otherwise have access to most of the pens you are referring to. I will be doing some OMAS celluloid pens from the period. I also have an Aurora Cellini on my buy list which is a gorgeous sterling pen from that period. If I can find one of those to buy I will do a review.
      I've always wanted a Michael Perchin but I am not a fan of gold vermeil which a lot of their pens used. This material is difficult to maintain so a lot of the ones I have been seeing don't look great.

    Thank you for the review! I have been looking at this paper for a long time without actually pulling the "buy" trigger. Perhaps I am in the minority that can't understand why the original TR can't be replicated and I will miss it forever. I liked Cosmo AIr Light but the thickness, stiffness, toothiness was always a turn off for actual writing my diaries and was only used for playing with inks and non-sensical scribbles. I didn't know Cosmo Air Light was discontinued; I have a few more loose pages left so I will get this Iroful next. Greetings from the East Bay!

    • @BlakesBroadcast
      @BlakesBroadcast  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Paolo, I also don't know why they have not been able to replicate TR. Is there some kind of material that has been discontinued or something extra special about the original machine?
      TR was designed for printing and there actually are a lot of comparable papers for that original application, it's just the fountain pen part that has been more difficult to replicate without getting too onion-skin-like.
      If you like smooth paper there isn't any paper I've tried that is smoother than Passepied cream.

    I have a stack of Iroful’s loose leaf , blank, A4 sheets. And I really like it a whole lot. I’d love to see Iroful in well-made notebooks with lined/blank sheet options. I have no experience yet with Cosmo Air Light, so I cannot speak on the comparisons. But interesting to read two others tell of their opinions on how the two papers compare.
    Two years ago, while visiting and shopping in Singapore, I randomly chanced upon a stationery store selling unbranded notebooks (A5) containing very light (very comparable to TR 52), ‘Radio-Bond’ FP-friendly paper. Each sheet is blank on one side and ruled on the other. I have found it to be excellent, extremely affordably priced paper that I now frequently use for my daily writing with fountain pens. If I’m not mistaken, I bought the spiral-bound, with red front and back covers, A5 notebooks (w/100-110 sheets) for US $5-6. Absolutely unbeatable value on price and quality.
    I will look to buy more Iroful paper for myself from your store, Blake.
    Many thanks for a great review.

      Hi Sajjad, if you find a place to buy it in the US. I'd love to try it. When I search for it I see something like what you are describing from a store in Bangladesh but I see no way to buy it.

    • @sajjadhusain4146
      @sajjadhusain4146 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BlakesBroadcast Oh, certainly, Blake. I’ve been seeking and inquiring about the Radio-Bond paper notebooks here in the U.S., without any luck, so far, sadly. But if and when I do, I’ll certainly let you know straightaway. There’s even fully blank loose leaf sheets of this paper (slightly larger than A4) available at the store I bought the notebooks in Singapore. I also bought a ream of 100 of those loose sheets myself. The best paper purchase deal I’ve ever had, anywhere. And now I learn from you that some store in Bangladesh apparently also stocks the same stuff. Then it might even possibly be found in India. Is it exclusively for the Asian market, I have to wonder.

    I might of missed it, but does it work with flex nibs Blake?

    • @BlakesBroadcast
      @BlakesBroadcast  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, it works with flex nibs provided they don't damage the surface. In my experience it is just as tough as CAL and TR. So if you have something really brutal to the surface it will bleed.

    Hey what is the dry time compared to Cosmo Air because I literally cant even use my cosmo air light because ink will still be wet an hour later. Thats not paper in my opinion lol thats like glass.

    • @BlakesBroadcast

      I don't notice any difference in my practical tests. These are slow drying microcoated papers.

    I really like this paper and have used it for swatching inks as well as writing. I don’t agree that it compares to Cosmo Air Light in that the lines do not spread like they do on CAL. I use extra fine nibs and on CAL they spread to medium lines. I would love the Iroful in a nice notebook.

    • @BlakesBroadcast
      @BlakesBroadcast  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is interesting. What ink and pen are you using because I tested for line spread and I saw no difference between them.

      @@BlakesBroadcast I tries CAL with a variety of pens and inks and it felt spongy and lines spread with everything I used. The Iroful does not do that at all and it feels more coated and less soft.

      @@peggylove1exactly my experience of CAL too.

    • @BlakesBroadcast
      @BlakesBroadcast  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have done more testing and there is maybe a hair more line spread on the CAL than the Iroful but it's super close. I used TR 52 as a control and both Iroful and CAL do show a more noticeably wide line especially with wetter pens.

    • @peggylove1
      @peggylove1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BlakesBroadcast I’m writing very small and with a fine nib on both TR 52 and the Iroful. Even with a loupe I can’t really see any difference. On CAL it was quite obvious, in fact I gave that paper away because I disliked the line spread so much. But you obviously have tested papers more scientifically and I appreciate your reviews.
