How to install Google Maps, Waze, Spotify on your Proton X50 IHU

- Hi all, I’m creating this post for those of you out there that are not tech-savvy or living outside of KL/Selangor.
I’ve managed to help out a handful of users and the most common issue is the first step to installing the ES File Explorer.
I understand that the instructions can be long and many people don't like reading long instructions too so I hope that making a video will help.
I’ve done a 1 take video below to show exactly how it is done every step of the way. I’ve also intentionally not fast-forwarding the video to show how long each of the processes will take.

Nope. it won't work on Atlas. you are out of luck for now.
Hi john, truly appreciate your sharing of video for installation. I tried to install Waze on my x50 but it doesn’t work. When I try for TH-cam, it works just fine. May I know is there a solution? Wish I could send you photos of the issue at hand :(

hi John, First of all, i would like to say thank you for your effort in tips and recording this video. For my X50, I'm installing 2 apk files only which are Maps5 and Spotify using the file in the link. It was a smooth process. the downloading period for ES and apk files are shorter for my case. My Spotify works perfectly. I can sign in to my acc and I can play the music. But unfortunately, for Maps5, I can't sign in, I cant update the latest Maps, and when searching for directions, there is a message that the apps cannot detect my location. Are there any missing steps to use the Maps? Secondly, after finishing installing the apk files, should we remove/delete the ES files? Thank you again ;)
1. You cannot login Google Maps because it require Google services to be installed. So no you will have to just use it as is.
2. For Waze you can login but using email account.
3. No you don't have to uninstall ES file explorer just leave it in case you want to install other items in the future.

@@drxxavier One other offline map app I can recommend is Petal Maps from Huawei, Petal Maps can work with both online and offline and no need to depend on Google Maps or Waze. I had used Petal Maps and its almost as identical to Google Maps with some changes.
now can install google map & spotify.. youtube & youtube music cannot support..
I installed the YT. I open it and successful. But the after i restart my car. It ask for update. How to do it?
go google Smart Tube and download that APK to install instead. the old youtube is no longer supported.
Bro, after i upgrade the infortainment into ATLAS, suddenly all the apk gone. Saya try install balik, xdpt sudah haha

This is only for Proton X50. not for any other models.

For Gmaps cannot login. Waze, spotify, Netflix can.
Don't update yo latest versions as the IHU is running android 5.0 only and the latest versions of apps may ot be compatible.

After reading the chats to and fro here, wouldnt it be safer to use Mirrorlink your more powerful smartphones and use Google Maps or Waze instead of installing an Android OS which after install, you aren't able to downgrade to GKUI? After installing to Android or the OEM Atlas, its like the point of no return and you have to live with your mistakes and cannot be rectified unless you replace the OEM HeadUnit altogether. Will the 360 camera even work? This will work for some ppl not for everyone.
For those who made it work, congrats but for others, sorry...its your own fault for trying. Rm8200 for a headunit is way too costly.
We understand where you are coming from. But if you've used the unit after sideloading the apps you don't even need your phone anymore.
Also, I don't want to burn my phone screen on a long journey with QD link. On QD Link the screen doesn't turn off that is just killing my expensive phone.

in the event of an issue you can just unstill stall the apps before going back to proton.

There can be multiple reasons. Start by making sure you follow all the steps correctly. If you have and it still doesn't work then try using a different pendrive.
How to install apk for new updated OS System X50?
No way to hack the new update yet. Better not to update just yet.

Nope. Exora is not running an Android unit.
Hi John, is that possible to rollback to GKUI19?
once you are on Atlas. even if you factory reset it will not go back to GKUI. so don't need to try. The only way to get back GKUI requires you to do a risky re-image your IHU which i don't nessasary recomend

by default mmg guna internet dari head unit utill your data habis.
How to update the APK? It stated the installed applications are outdated. An update is required. But when I press the update button, nothing happen.
Not all app you can update. The reason why out dated apks are used because the IHU is running a very slow and old processor. The IHU is also just running on android 5 so updating an app might render it useless on the head unit.

It will not work with the latest Atlast OS. Only for GKUI19.

Is it possible that the Head Unit or HU will not detect the USB even if formatted as Fat32? My Usb unable to detect by the HU even its formatted as Fat32
yes it is possible. I had that issue with certain pendrive as well. Try different pendrives from different brands.

@@fpx-nerdgaming7744 I've used a SanDisk one before and after some time it becomes not recognizable anymore by the IHU. I'm not sure why. Now i'm using a pendrive from USAMS.

Hi, youTube Vanced unable to play. It requested to update the version but the update button unable to push. Any idea?
TH-cam Vanced is no longer in service. For now I guess the alternative is to install web browser and view YT that way. Will have to look for alternative apps.

We actually use an Android Auto emulator by the name of Headunit Realoded. Just install it like how you do any other .apk apps.

If you are on Atlas then you cannot use this hack. No method for Atlas ATM.

Not that I know of. Been using it for a month now and no issues.

not very sure what you mean by wifi option but you can select that in the settings under connections.
btw I have Geely Coolray not Proton, which under settings -> connections I just see bluetooth settings, and no wifi. Thanks bro!

Do it at your own risk. These are aftermarket modifications. It's a calculated risk each person has to take.

@@petertam4606 TH-cam Vanced is no longer in service and it will no longer work even on a newer version. I have tried it and it's the same. An alternative for now would be just to install a web browser and open youtube from there.
This is a work around until a new app is identified for replacement.

Seems like my DSP is mess up when I installed..also the hi proton voice command is no longer available..anyone have same issue?
When you say messed up. How is it messed up?
The Hi Proton command only works to open the app. It doesn't work to change anything inside the apps.

Hi John... Managed to install by following ur instructions. However TH-cam n Maps requested update on following day, but the apps unable to update n cannot run now.

Hi, thanks for sharing the step by step installation process. Everything works smooth for me, Waze can login and use. But Spotify I can't login using my email+ password or FB. Is there any other solution? Thanks
For spotify you need to login your spotify from your PC web browser. Once you know your email and password you can login your IHU with that email and password.
You cannot use FB and Google to login from tour IHU. It won't work because the IHU doesn't have FB and google services.
