Master of color, drama, legato, story-telling...it's all there! All played with ease, never panic-sounding or frenzied. Great recording. Thanks for posting.
I feel as if I were a child who have known until now only fruit juice in soft drink bottle picks real fruit from trees in a farm for the first time. Cortot gives me the true musical fruit which is full of natural juice.
Cortot gives sometimes notes that are not contained in Liszt's score. But the disharmonious notes as well as his ad libitum part please me more than the correct note other pianists give.
melody lyricism lightness poetry never demonstrative never charismatic always music above self centeredness here are the qualities of Alfred Cortot in Rapsody 2 of F Lizst , alone in Discography of all historical pianists .
' Just gotta LOVE that Starburst cadenza featuring more than just a hint of the gay carnivalesque! This guy was a genius and musical pride of Switzerland and France! (Here setting aside, of course, the Vichy "Minister of Culture and Arts" thing.)

Indeed! The 'starburst' I'd characterize it, as near it's end it explodes into a bedazzlement of color. Going way-back to his first Victor acoustic of this work, he was featuring this, which through the various recordings of it, was constantly be refined. It is equally interesting and fun as Rachmaninoff's is on his Edison cut.
I remember his words that you must first dream the music before you can play it. So true.
Agree
He was 75 years old here o.0 Damn.. This really proves that the human mind doesn't stop growing at old age.

Thanks for sharing! This is an awesome performance for such advanced age.

J agree, music only music without personnal piano effects to make his audience love him .
I love how he messes up the first note and still delivers a really impressive rendition

He commands the instrument to such degree that even a mistake he turns to poetry. He is the MASTER.
A poet rather then a show off, unfortunately people now a days don’t have the patience for this. They want theatrics and facial expressions
CORTOT IS GENIUS
Right. Like me
Apart from everything else, the dry accoustics makes you hear a actual real piano, made from wood and steel!
Thanks for uploading!
