The Universe at its current state is estimated to be around 14 billion years old. Earth is estimated to be around 4.5 billion. Life is estimated to have started around 4 billion years ago. Animals are estimated to have been here for only 800 million. Since then, life has flourished rapidly. Compared to the life of the Universe, it doesn't really take that long for things to pop up and start moving. There has probably been much more advanced life out there since way before Earth's life in general came along. They could have gone through an entire existence before our life started. The Universe is still pretty young, but we are muuuuuuuuuch younger.
Maybe aliens treat us like hamster a self-sufficient hamster which is constantly getting smarter, but we can’t let it get too smart as all that hamster will know is it cage and maybe a bit outside the cage because the aliens don’t want us to go that far
