PNP bipolar junction transistor (BJT) wired as a switch. The low on signal comes from a push button switch which also has a pull up resistor that keeps the voltage held high until overpowered by the closed switch which then connects directly to ground while pressed.

Well, why don't 5 volts just flow directly to ground through resistor 1?
It will flow through the pull up 10K and it will also flow through the transistor base to turn it on.
