If it is a 1918 bolo and not one of the earlier bolos made by the springfield armory then it rust proof coating was removed or if the bolo is heavily used, it could have possibly wore away through natural wear and tear.

a little bit of trivia, a hard case metal wood etc is a scabbard leather nylon etc is a sheath
That's fine for trivia except the M6 has always been referred to as a scabbard by all collectors and the military when it was issued.
I've got the mark 1 and m3 so I need an mark 2 now heheh...
