  • Let's check out one of the greatest SLR cameras of all time, Nikon's F4. This camera is one of the very first SLRs to have both an auto-focus drive as well as matrix metering. The F4's a bit more complicated than some of the previous cameras I've been testing. Let's see just how much more complex this beast really is!

    My daily carry is the F2 but the close second is my F4. I like how the F4 starts to cut off circulation to my head.

      Funny enough, the F2 is my go-to, as well. Cutting off the circulation is a wild path to creativity!

    Most beautiful camera ever. AF in low light is not perfect even with f1.4 lens but some people can solve this with hands. I love it.

      I've wasted tons of shots trying to use that AF in low light, I hear you. But I appreciate knowing the limitations so we can work around them or use them creatively.

    When it was released was an unreachable desire. Two years ago a collector sold one in excellent condition by around 250 dollars. I took it everywhere and it is an awesome camera. Regards from Brazil.

    Owning an F3 I went and got an F4 this Fall, absolutely loving it. When I want full manual or smaller package I'll take the F3, but man the F4 is sweet. Especially the 1/8000 shutter. I can take my AFD 50mm F1.4 out in the afternoon street walk and using 200-400 iso film snap shot at f1.4 wide open. My F3 maxes at 1/2000 so I can't shoot it wide open in the afternoons like that even with 100 iso film most of the time unless I use ND filters.

      That's great! And nice lens you've got there. I've wanted to get an F3 for some time, but the F4 was always going to be first. That shutter speed is lightning fast, same as in my Z6ii mirrorless.

      @@dancrowderphotography8123 in terms of the quality versus feature! F2AS if going backwards for build quality and performance manual. F5 if going forward for last of the pro feature, witched body with modern enough digital interface. Canon was doing good by this time mid 90s as well in their pro bodies

    This was the Dream Camera for Nikon shooters, back in the day. But it was clear at this point, that Canon had a better focusing system. I stuck it out with Nikon and still have mine, but I had to replace the SpeedLight that was introduced with this camera. B&H sent me a Like New SB-24.

    This camera utilized the full capability of the SB-24, that was actually introduced with the previous mode, the N8008/F801. The period correct 50mm for the F4s was the earlier one with the Glass Window. F4s was unique in that you could manually, or automatically rewind the film. Nikon offered a Modification at the time, to have it Rewind, but leave the film tab leader out just a bit for Darkroom enthusiasts. A very well designed camera, but Canon was ahead in Auto Focusing at this time.

    • @dancrowderphotography8123
      @dancrowderphotography8123  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting about the rewind and modification options. I wonder how many F4s in the wild might have that film tab leader mod. I'll keep an eye out!

    Nikon knew that to follow in the footsteps of the F3 they had to come up with something extraordinarily special. The F4 is that camera. Built with superb precision and to highest standards, sophisticated for its time and capable of taking all the Nikon lenses. sadly, it was too much of a camera for the birdbrain reviewers of the time. Nowadays we kow better. This was the camera that set the mould for all future generations of SLRs and DSLRs from Nikon or anyone else. Superb tool for the job.

      @@dancrowderphotography8123 Thank you. Sadly, only with the few who understand what a camera should be. An F4 in near mint condition retails as much as an F100. Not that the F100 is not a brilliant camera, but it just shows the mentality of the majority of the people who buy second hand cameras.

    Love my F4 Love the heft. Love the shutter mechanism, really well damped. My photography does not require continuous AF which I think is its major flaw? But I find it's AF very snappy and accurate
    It works with my 50mm AF-S lens as well. I mostly use the Nikon 28-105 on it. Great combo.
    Great work Dan. It IS a conversation piece as well

    • @GirdHerd

  • @GirdHerd

    I'm very impressed with how sharp those images are and how good the color is with that D series lens. Just want to mention that the F4 will not auto focus G series lenses nor can it be used in fully Manual mode because there is no aperture ring on the G series lenses. The D series lenses are perfect for the F4. I currently have the 28-105mm D lens and plan to buy a 17-35mm D and 80-200mm D to round out my auto focus lens set for my F4s. BTW, If you are interested in a Nikon F body that will auto focus G series lenses AND work in fully Manual mode, check out the F100 (or F80/N80).

    • @dancrowderphotography8123
      @dancrowderphotography8123  ปีที่แล้ว

      I started my camera collection with some gifted Nikons and a bunch of nice F Lenses, then added on the 50mm D from the video and the 80-200mm D, which I really like using with the auto-focus. I'd love to try the 17-35mm, too. Haven't considered a G series lens yet, so very good to know about the F100, thank you!

    • @robdixon5016
      @robdixon5016 หลายเดือนก่อน

      F4 can use G series lenses and will autofocus them. Modes are limited to S P and PH however. I have 2 F4 cameras and they are compatible with the G lenses. No VR however.

    Careful when loading film to keep the curled end of the film away from that sensitive shutter mechanism. Pull it across so it can't interfere with the shutter blades.

      @dancrowderphotography8123 yes, I am, F4S with 20-35 2.8 and F4E 58mm 1.4G, but it's too heavy. Although I enjoyed the process, I bought contax rxii and 85mm 1.4 because I like the slow shooting process. But most of the time I still use Sony's rx100vii to record my life.
