  • Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker, the largest and deepest cold war bunker open to the public in South East England.
    Hidden in a wood off the A128 Ongar (now well sign-posted for the tourist trade), Brentwood Road, is a small bungalow well built which hides a three floored bunker complex 125 feet (38 m) underground, a long corridor leads down to a place in which 600 people would have been confined behind blast proof doors in the event of a nuclear war.
    The bunker was originally built in 1952/3 by the construction firm Peter Lind & Company Ltd, as part of ROTOR, an urgent government building programme to improve Britain's air defence network and became the Sector Operations Command for the RAF Fighter Command with responsibility for the London Sector.
    It subsequently became adopted as a potential 'regional government bunker' as the threat of nuclear war grew in the 1960s. The bunker was sold in the 1990s and is now a tourist attraction and film location.The bunker is currently owned and operated by the family who originally owned the land before the military moved in. It has a many historical items remaining intact including a BBC studio.
    A souvenir shop in the original canteen sells items, including government literature produced for the public in the early 1980s.
    The Owner Mike Parrish shows you around in this video tour.

    I had the pleasure of meeting Mike today 4/11/18.

    A brilliant video and if I’m not mistaken, very similar to the guided tour that you receive as a visitor in real life (as in the voice commentary on the wands). I have been a few times and always found it fascinating. By the way, we were asked only to make a donation per visit. This is a lovely gesture and something not often given by tourist attractions. Of course I was always happy to give a good amount as this place has so much interest and needs to be available to all. I watched the video displayed inside which would have been broadcast by the government which tells people how to ‘protect’ themselves by pulling mattresses over a kitchen table. The commentary advises on the futility and that this was just way to occupy the public’s mind as the inevitable approached. Chilling to imagine now. Thank you for letting people see what was a secret for so long.

    Fantastic video. Cheers. The Cold War and nuclear bunkers are fascinating. Amazing that stations like this were still operational until 1994 in the UK.
    Marauding gangs, murdering and raping in a nuclear dystopia is a chilling thought. The 'Protect and Survive' civil defence films made the in the 70's ask members of the public to help neighbours when the all clear sounded. Of course they wouldn't though, it would have been every man for themselves.

      @alexday5892 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Steven Whiting The mast sits on a hill in the middle of a field. No one would have questioned it back in the day as probably no one could see it. It's on private land and not clearly visible from the nearest road. It wouldn't have drawn any notice back then. We have the advantage of now knowing.

      Yes it might well be. But the machinery etc will not have the fuel stores anymore. So it needs time to be set up and tested. Time, they would not have. It would make a nice tomb i guess.
      And given it is well known, it would probably be targetted by people and overrun.
      And even if it were sealed, its not hard for people to get in either.
      I doubt they have a cache of weapons suitable for dealing with any of that anyways.
      The stark truth rolling forewards; most are accepted to die. In the blasts, emp attacks and biological attacks (all secretly housed in the enemy nuke weapons). Plus the subsiquent public anarchy (roaming around).
      So, no major bunker works now exist for the public at large. No civilian plans for escape, as the public will mostly be the enemy anyways (at that point).
      If you want to survive, as a member of the public ..water, might be your best shield.
      If you have no bug out plan, no location already selected, scouted and maintained (close by to you). You don't have much of an option ..get close to the blast, stand by a wall, and wave at the blast. It won't save you, but you'll leave a fantastic shadow burnt into the wall. The post humans, 1000's of years from now, will ponder what happened here.

    I went on Thursday for the first time. Interesting place, and makes you wonder what would have happened if the balloon had gone up.
    It's very likely that law and order would have broken down very quickly, and officials allocated jobs in the bunker, would have more than likely stayed outside with their families.
    Three months in there and nothing to come out to. Everything would have been contaminated, so no food or water. Maybe why they had a stock of cyanide in the bunker ?

    • @Moodymongul
      @Moodymongul ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the Government ditched funding these bunkers in the 90's. No modern, functioning 'extintintion level event bases' (Nuclear bases are so last 'cold war') are public knowledge these days. They have enough survivers in the militery, government, Sciences and infrastucture to worry about.
      Your survival was not planned into such an event (not today anyways).
      That, on the quiet, is your job to prep for. And it must be close and well maintained too ...and keep away from the crazy city people :) There is little society there as is, So imagine the dog eats dog scenarios you'll get there.
      If you want a chance (which many may well not want) - study, prep and ..stay quiet.
