one of the very few ads on youtube that made me further look into the product being sold and truly empathize with its creators, with no bs, true to life advertising, while introducing its purpose and why you may want to buy it. it wasn’t this specific video, but it was very similar, and I’m considering buying one now. I hope you’re having a good day today
He does exaggerate the capabilities with the supplied materials and this has resulted in negative reviews. Filters and optics are needed and hopefully will be an accessory in the neolucidas future.
I recently bought one : it's awesome !! Needs some self-training to get the skills, especially adapting light levels on sketch, but it's always part of the art of drawing. Defitively worth it !!
I all ready can illustrate, but this speeds things up, getting the proportions done faster, then I can put my style in to the outlines I had just put down.
you could buy them in the back of old comic books from the 70s the ones at that time were junk sold for under $15 and made from plastic and a shiny sticker as reflector.
But even the better made 1970s models were crap compared to a 19thC antique. The key is that the extension arm must be stiff and fixed when in use, any slight shift of the prism relative to working surface and contours shift dramatically. Gotta say I have serious doubts about NeoLucida's choice of bendable arm for extender.
That's pretty well how they are made now. Even the latest Neo Lucida XL uses that method. The optical quality of the prism should be superior but I can't see it working well without diopter lenses like on the antique. Getting the plus version but I suspect I will have to add my own diopters.
This is pretty cool. I had no idea such a device existed. I think I know a cousin who’d definitely want one of these. When I next meet them I hope I can remember this thing and bring it up to her. I think she’d possibly like it. Idk tho :p Either way this thing is awesome.
Hey guys. Just got this and can’t wait to try it out. I am a creative person but drawing has never been my thing unless it was structural “straight line” type of stuff. I look forward to trying my hand had squiggly lines. 😂😂
it needs a way bigger Prizm, that's why the first surface mirrors are better even if the image is inverted. one or the other needs to happen before its commercially viable. Plus, there is a app that does similar things used with smart phone.
Prism size is fine. It's the most expensive part. Bigger is substantially more pricey. The image is not inverted on the mirror version. First reflection in the mirror is. The second reflection on the silvered clear panel corrects the orientation.
my brother had one of these, as a kids' toy, in the early 1960s. it may have been different tho - i thought, at the time, it used an angled mirror ...... ?? not too sure tbh but you used it the same way as this antique version.........
I wanted to do this on my glasses for like an Engraving. I figured something like theatrical photo gel maybe with some carbon paper on a Celtic Design and then you can carry that over for like Ivory or something. Perhaps even jade.
I ordered the new prism plus model. The problem people are having is a focus issue. Like iron sights on a rifle. The eye must focus on the close sight and then on the distant object. Not a easy task but doable for most. A set of diopter lenses like on the antique they are copying would allow the focus to be about the same on both making it easy to use.
2023 now and a youtube ad appears for the first time in my feed, linking to a ten year 2013 video? Now the youtube clip says a limited number, so have they run out yet? No information to help buyers purchase it, and no replies here to any questions? Hmmm, looks a great idea, but dodgy as heck.
Historical use the camera lucida is exaggerated. The first shortcoming every user (myself included) faces is limited size of drawing possible, and as the prism must not move relative to working surface, lengthening the distance (on 19thC models full extension of telescoped arm) between prism and working surface frequently leads to slight shifts (=failure). The most likely art historical example of camera lucida use are Ingres' small portrait drawings, see those for best size expectation. If trained in 19thC French Academy methods, as of course Ingres was, there is no need for this tool. (SO MANY people today teaching those methods). The only advantage it afforded Ingres and his colleagues is speed, and looking closely at the small Ingres portrait drawings, one notices tiny pencil dot marks throughout, suggesting that Ingres did not trace contours while looking into the prism, but rather quickly recorded lengths between the landmarks of face and body that determine resemblance. He likely drew the contours while looking directly at the model, as his contours do not share the clumsy, lazy line quality of photo tracing that results from most untrained artists' use of the device. It's a fun thing to play with, neat to see a live scene on one's working surface, but application is quite limited. Better to spend one's money on a good camera and projector if one is satisfied to draw by tracing.
I was absolutely excited to order a camera lucida XL! I filled all of the information and then I discovered before I inputed my credit card info they use Amazon. I've made a commitment not to use Amazon directly or indirectly because of how fulfillment people are treated. Is there any other way to order my to have my device shipped to me?
The Neolucida XL is more for children. That or a Lucy work best for short attention spans. The prism has more of a learning curve to use but it is inherently sharper in detail. The only issue I had was the lack of diopter lenses like on the antiques.
I was mocked for calling a great artist a master as i asked for art lessons. They ridiculed me for using the word master. That it was an inappropriate word. What a joke. Thank you.
It's a very good copy of the antique but the instructions are too simple. The instructions for the 1930s lucida cover the complexities of the prism versions.
So what you're saying is...... people were actually THAT ugly back then and it wasn't just because the artist was bad??? Cause some of the royalty back then 🤮
how about you grind like the rest of us and master your craft on your own....This isn't cheating but it defeats the purpose of learning and growing as an artist
This is beautiful, and incredibly important especially nowadays. HUMAN art is so incredibly important to us as a society. The reason generations past were able to achieve so much with so little is that drive, that creativity, that imagination. 🫶
Not cheating at all, it's all part of composition and layout. Setting up a scene to copy is cheating under the guidelines that says that using a lucida is cheating.
Why am I getting this ad 8 years later lol!
😅 I just got this ad, that’s 9 yrs later. It only helps with the outline, then the rest, all depend on yr painting skill..
I’m JUST now getting it!
Me too lol
9 for me man. Its almost like people dont want us to see this ad til its too late.
Wait WTF same
Can't believe that I watched the whole ad, amazing info and project 👍
I got it before another video and also watched the whole thing. It was so interesting I came to find their channel.

I got this ad today in Oct 2023 and one of the rare occasions i watched an entire ad on TH-cam.
Watched the whole ad and came here to show it someone else, this is great thank you for sharing!
I am a painter and never knew about this tool.Thank you I am looking forward to using one.
I’ve always loved Hockney. I was fascinated with his discussion of camera lucida. I bought the neolucida and it’s really cool! Thanks!
I recently bought one : it's awesome !! Needs some self-training to get the skills, especially adapting light levels on sketch, but it's always part of the art of drawing. Defitively worth it !!
Where can we buy a Neolucida drawing tool? Is the name sake also a website ie , just add the '"com" part?? There's not even a link in the description!
@@valerieann8007 I had a similar problem for buying from France. I wrote them by email and they provided me a working link to proceed to order.
I’m self taught with the help of TH-cam ❤️❤️❤️I can’t hardly wait. Thank you
I stopped what I was watching (Redacted) and searched out this ad to rewatch it. What a great tool for artists.
One of the best ads I’ve ever watched
Just keep really still for a very very long time!!
Great product! I think this ad is a good perspective on how tools shape art and the smae can be said in my opinion about Ai
man its been 9 years since i first saw this and i still have not gotten one i want one sooooo bad!!!!!!!!!
Now THIS is a good ad.
That antique one is fly as heck. Neat gadget. I am an armchair artist and my mantra is "fake it till you make it".
I all ready can illustrate, but this speeds things up, getting the proportions done faster, then I can put my style in to the outlines I had just put down.

This is very interesting! I’m not sure if I should buy one but it definitely seems like a lot of fun to use!😊👍✨

Okay, this is fascinating.
Amazing what has taken place in the world since this ad released…..(seeing this for the first time 7/13/23)
doing God's work, many blessings
Beautiful!❤

Fascinating

Wow Awesome add to my wish list ❤
Hallelujah! Amen! Nice!

Bravo!
It's a pity you don't answer emails as I ordered a lucida XL and the delivery company failed to deliver it!

Please put a link in the description where people can call or just order the Neolucida drawing tool?
Id love one for Xmas Santa
*Did they ever say HOW to get one?*

Same same... if I want one, ship has sailed?
I wanted to do this on my glasses for like an Engraving. I figured something like theatrical photo gel maybe with some carbon paper on a Celtic Design and then you can carry that over for like Ivory or something. Perhaps even jade.
So where can I purchase one?
Where is the link to purchase?
I bought one and it's neat but u definitely need to practice

Yeah that’s really strange. I wonder if they did release the CAD models and someone else manufactured them and just ripped off their video
Got one and it's great. Arrived yesterday
Cool
Should have named it the Pocket Projector
Please send one to us
Isn't this what Dave created in Dave's Vermeer and used to paint his Vermeer?
Can I still buy one? if so from where?
Someone watched Tim's Vermeer.
Mobile phone and an outline filter kind of defeats the object now I guess.
I ONLY SEE UPSIDE DOWN OR ONLY A FRACTION OFY SUBJECT MATTER.
Please help me.
9yrs ago
Wow 8 years late lmao
So HOW does one order a nuelucida???
how much, and address to send money to.
Or you could just take a photo of the thing then put your paper on top of a tablet with the screen brightness turned up.

What was the name of the Renaissance Book that inspired this? Please tell me.
Don't know the book but searching camera lucida or camera obscura should put you on the right path.
Wow think this an old ad 😅
or you can make you own with glass
These guys are tryna fight back against the rise of AI art in the drawing communities😂😂😂😂
I was absolutely excited to order a camera lucida XL! I filled all of the information and then I discovered before I inputed my credit card info they use Amazon. Suck it up. Amazon is here to stay
Why did you trace a Karen?
i got one and sent it back the next day as it sucked big time..........buyer beware

Has bad reviews on amazon and other sites.

That's not drawing ... it's tracing.
So what you're saying is...... people were actually THAT ugly back then and it wasn't just because the artist was bad??? Cause some of the royalty back then 🤮
It's cute how you guys think those are good drawings. Whatever you do, don't hire a professional artist to demo your miracle product.
If camera lucida is cheating, then drawing and painting are cheating.
Camera lucida use is akin to tracing a photo, when drawing a live model one does not trace.
Drawing isn't "superhuman ability". It's interesting device but tracing isn't drawing - everybody on the internet already knows that because of arts
Bump. Tell that to Warhol, who used projectors for all of his work (including soup cans).
just learn to draw lol, this will only lead to terrible symbol drawing
how about you grind like the rest of us and master your craft on your own....This isn't cheating but it defeats the purpose of learning and growing as an artist
