France's Combat Jets Leave Chad As Paris Begins Military Withdrawal | Firstpost Africa
After Chad ended a key defence pact with its former coloniser France, Paris has now withdrawn its fighter jets from the central African country. The French Defence Ministry says the move came after a disagreement with Chadian authorities. France has withdrawn two Mirage 2000D fighter jets and a tanker aeroplane stationed at the Kossei airbase in Chad's capital N'Djamena. This marks the first stage of disengagement of France's military forces stationed in Chad. A gradual withdrawal of ground forces will follow in the weeks ahead. France still has about 1000 troops in Chad. The country had been a key link in France's military presence in Africa and its last foothold in the Sahel region. Why did Chad end a defence pact with France? Will Chad, like its neighbours, turn to Russia for cooperation?
