    As a follow up to my last video, this is footage from Icelandair flight number 863 from Reykjavik (KEF) to San Francisco (SFO) on the 767-300 (registration number TF-ISN). I was seated in 26E back in economy class, and unlike the flight to KEF several days prior, this one was nearly full.
    Now that I've done a full round trip on Icelandair, the question is: just how good (or bad) of an airline are they? Should Icelandair be avoided at all costs? Make sure to watch the video all the way to the end to hear my verdict...

    Since when did Icelandair become low cost ? Icelandair is not considered to be a low cost carrier. Icelandair is a legacy carrier with the price to go with it.

    • @sanspotter
      @sanspotter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I mistakenly assumed them to be low cost since they don’t serve free meals. And I’ve found their fares to be really low as well (fro the US west coast) so even if they aren’t an LLC it’s like they are operating as if they are.

    • @Cta2006
      @Cta2006 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      No airlines serves free food. Most airlines however include food in their overall higher ticket price, but it's not free. Never is.

    • @mikrokupu
      @mikrokupu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sanspotter Thanks for the video, really good editing! Icelandair has a long history of being one of the cheaper options between Europe/USA, that game has changed though. It's hard to make a clear difference between LCCs and legacy carriers these days, what you get "free" varies a lot. I know my 'home carrier' Finnair would like to adapt more LCC elements but they have to compete against the Asian legacies.

    • @estherni1
      @estherni1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Cta2006 Actually that's not true, KLM, BA and Alitalia for example, do offer free meals. And Icelandair used to offer free meals a few year back (along with free a 23kg bag for European trips and 2x23kg for North Am. flights.

    • @Cta2006
      @Cta2006 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No, they seem to offer free meals, but it's already calculated into the overall ticketprice. No airline gives food away for free. No airline would survive financially then. Low cost airlines specify more where you can choose if you want the ticket not to include food and becuase of that get an even cheaper ticket.

    Iceland Air is my favorite when going to Europe from Denver. It is awesome to clear customs in Iceland in a few minutes rather than waiting for an hour and a half in Paris. The passengers have been great on all of the flights I have taken. I am done with the large American carriers. Iceland Air has more legroom in economy as well, and I don't mind standing to wait for a plane since you have to sit for so long on the flight anyway.

    This video popped up in my feed Scott, here 4 years later having just completed a London to Seattle flight in Icelandair Economy. Still a really nice airline, very comfortable on the 737 Max, as I commented to the crew the coffee they service is amazing, they agreed. The crew were wonderful throughout. And Keflavik hasn't changed as an airport. Only during this time as a transit passenger and craving outside air I was directed to the smoking area. An outside corral spot completely deserted but with great views of waiting aircraft.

But mine was on a 757, not a 767. Seven hours each way in a single-aisle jet, but still a great experience. In-flight entertainment was enough to pass the time effectively. Added in a trip from KEF-LHR and back (767 each way here) to watch the Seattle Seahawks play in London. Airfare total just over $1,000 US. Would do it again, and hope to in the next 5-10 years.

    Flown Iceland Air 3 times within the last 18 months to Europe and back. When flying economy between Denver and Europe, I appreciate the break at KEF to get some fresh air and use the nicest airport bathrooms there are. The airport is a real zoo for connecting through as it is always crowded and you usually you have to take a bus out to the hardstand for boarding and it can be extremely windy. However, to me, that is all part of the experience which makes it interesting. I have an other trip planned soon with them as their fares are incredibly low.

    Why all the snark in the first part of the vid, when you give a positive summary at the end? Just ... askin'. My first Loftleidir -- um, Icelandair -- experience was in 1967, when it took a Bristol Britannia 15 h to make the journey from Idlewild -- today, we say "JFK" -- to Luxembourg, with a stopover in KEF, and the seat pitch would have given you a case of the screaming meemies. The food was pretty good, though, and there was enough alc to keep everyone happy, or at least sedated. I took them a few times since, and man, I've gotta say, a visit to the Blue Lagoon makes for the best stopover EV-ER!!! So take Loftseldir -- uh, Icelandair -- with confidence if it floats to the top of your search screen. I've never had a negative experience with them. (Don't get me started about United.)

I need a window seat because my neighbours usually have to visit the toilet often, plus so many people nudging you on the way to the toilet if you have an aisle seat... 8+ hours of that... Nope, window seat for me and I try to sleep, untouched, leaning against the wall. But I usually get someone who keeps pushing the back of my seat... I want to kill them... but Icelandair itself, I have nothing but praise for the flight. I bring my own food and water, I'm all set. An absolutely awesome airline. I used Icelandair every time I flew to Europe and never had an issue (PDX to Europe). First time I used Icelandair was in ecomony and it was not disappointing at all. Like yourself I reserved an aisle seat. The other times I flew I went in Economy comfort and Saga class. Economy comfort was great but now with the removal of the comfort class its either economy or first class. Like you said, you can skip saga class and still be comfortable in economy.
    I never stayed long enough during my lay-over to walk around the airport because all my lay-over were shorter than 2 hours. With the amount of people there, its still very efficiency making it to my connection. Once I had 45 minutes to be taxied off the plane, go through customs, down a beer at the airport bar and check-in to my flight. When I arrived in Amsterdam, my check-in bags were on my flight with no issues. I recommend this airline 100%!

      The fact that you successfully downed a beer at KEF with a 45 minute connection time says a lot about how efficient that place is. 😂 It’s crowded as heck during peak hours but everything seems to flow nicely.

    Flew Icelandair out of JFK in 2017 and I have nothing bad to say about it. My only problem was legroom. I’m 6’5”-6” (give or take) and most economy seats barely accommodate me. Otherwise, my 5.5 hour flight was fine.

  • @carlhaluss

    Great, informative video. I don't travel much at all, matter of fact it is over 10 years since my last visit to an airport! Anyway, I have been considering taking Icelandair from Vancouver to Helsinki, it seems to be the quickest and most direst route from here, as there are no direct flights. I was wondering if Business (Saga) class is worth it and, from what I see, I would be just as well off in Economy. The seating in Saga class is still, from what I can see, like most domestic business class domestic flights. I can't sleep on an aircraft anyway. Like you, I just want a fairly comfortable aisle seat, and left alone to read or use my iPad. So I am grateful to you for this video, and it also gives me an idea of Reykjavik airport, so I know what to expect and not be disappointed. Cheers, Carl

      Glad this was helpful Carl! Definitely skip Saga class - it’s not much better than economy from what I’ve seen and heard, and with the decent amount of leg room and nice video entertainment in economy, you’ll have a great flight at a good price. Have fun!

      I flew with them this past july, and I had bought my tickets early, Nov 2017. what happened was they elected to change both my flights in Feb, 2018 to a stop over flight in Copenhagen, which was not what I had bought. I went from Toronto to Iceland, and was supposed to fly direct to Gothenburg Sweden. so what I got instead was a layover in Copenhagen, bused to a small puddle jumper, and then to Gothenburg. I was pissed, it's like bait and switch. I would be wary of this.

      I flew Icelandair last year, Glasgow to Toronto (then Westjet to Montreal) in Saga class. Plane was delayed leaving KEF, baggage reclaim at Toronto was very slow and meant we had no chance of making our connection for Montreal. When we finally arrived at Westjet desk, however, we found that we had already been transferred to a later flight, so, ticks in the box there. Good price for business class. The food was lovely, very fresh and the flight attendants very friendly and helpful. Comfort might depend on your height! I am quite small and found the seats, though very roomy, didn't suit me after a while as I couldn't comfortably reach the foot rests (a leg rest or taking my inflatable footrest would have been helpful). My husband had no such problem and was very comfortable. On the KEF-YYZ leg, we had bulkhead seats which I found even less comfortable, so changed our seats away from bulkhead for the return.
      KEF airport is a bit confusing and it didn't have many sears, but, the Saga lounge is lovely; small and beautifully formed! I would fly with Icelandair again, no problem.

    I love Icelandair. First time i got round trip JFK to CDG for 390. Had a window seat plus the 2 seats next to me were empty so basically had entire row to myself. • @sanspotter
      @sanspotter  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      JFK to CDG for $390 is a steal - they definitely have good prices compared to many other airlines. And yeah, the oatmeal! I was actually considering getting that, but I couldn’t figure out how they’d make it since there’s no hot water on the plane (at least hot enough to make proper oatmeal). Good thing I passed on it I guess. 😅

    I typically enjoy your videos, but I believe you're mistaken about Saga. Here was my experience. We actually got upgraded when they eliminated economy comfort this year. MCO-KEF and KEF-HAM. We got to use the United Air lounge pre-boarding. When we boarded we were greeted with champagne, a pillow, blanket, headphones, toiletry kit, socks, and individual bowl of nuts. Before the first meal we got a warm towel to wash our hands. It came with a three course meal where you chose your main course. I received more bottles of water than my bag would hold and had to turn some away. They came around with the bread basket twice. We also got breakfast. We had very friendly flight attendants and our own saga bathrooms. I believe it's worth the extra money if you have it to spend. The worst part about Icelandair is the customer service they eliminated last year. You can't get through on the phone but once you're in the air, it's worth it.

    • @sanspotter
      @sanspotter  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Erica! Yeah, I’m pretty sure that I would have the same thoughts if I had the opportunity to try the Saga back to back with economy - there’s no doubt that it’s better than the economy class product, but what worries me is that I’ve heard so many complaints about it over the years. I’m easy to please though (lol) so if given the choice I’d probably pick Saga as well. My comments in the video were based on the fact that it was a pretty nice ride in the back of the plane, and that for most people, it’d most likely be good enough. Now I wanna try Saga to see first hand what it’s like... 😆

    I've flown Icelandair twice from Washington Dulles to Keflavik. It's a similar product to most domestic flights on U.S. airlines, in all classes, i.e. they get you there but don't expect many luxuries, and the premium class isn't the best value for your money. They fly 757-200s out of IAD that are definitely showing their age. And no, hakarl isn't one of the inflight meal choices :-P

    • @sanspotter

    Icelandair provides the best seasonal service to mainland Europe from my home airport. YHZ is too small to have many direct flights to Europe (though Westjet is expanding.) But Icelandair provides a nice array of destinations that are reached with a transfer in KEF. It is often better and cheaper than flying west to YUL or YYZ to then fly east.

    I was looking forward to trying Icelandair, but I don't think I will be flying with them again for the following reasons:
    1) No lounge access outside of Reykjavik, and connection times were too tight to access the lounge in Reykjavik.
    2) No check-in counter available at Charles de Gaulle when I arrived early for my flight, with no instructions for where to drop off checked baggage after self check-in.
    3) No priority boarding, and Keflavik airport is too small to accommodate the number of passengers connecting.
    4) Inconsistent meal service, on the first segment, they were out of lamb, and on the second segment, I got the last beef.
    5) I think the lower prices attracted people who typically wouldn't be seated in a premium cabin, as I had a disruptive, entitled family of three seated in my row.
    I wouldn't recommend flying Icelandair again.
