If Puerto Rico is going to achieve any decolonization: statehood or Independence
There needs to be a modern movement of neo Puerto Rican patriotism that includes both Island & PR diaspora that fits the modern times while honoring it's patriotic founding fathers

"The simple fact is… that our federal government treats the people of Puerto Rico as second-class citizens. You can examine the entire framework of economic, political and social relations between Puerto Rico and the United States mainland and you find everywhere the attitude of the wealthy imperial power toward a colonial inferior.[It is] my own deep-seated conviction that every major problem besetting the Puerto Rican people originates in their political status.Only independence will give these people the control of their own destiny, and through independence, with hard work and common effort, they can raise their standard of living, achieve greater security, and resolve their problems in their own way and in their best interest."

Get over the fucking colonial shit. Imperialism was WAY before your time, so quit acting like you been there. Boriqueneers fought and died for the country you call imperialist. In 2020 statehood won with just 52.52% which when factored with a turnout of 54.72% means that 28.69% supported statehood thats a drop by 18.93%. Im not sure how to feel about Puerto Rican independence. On one hand, I want it to stay with the U.S. so anything the U.S. does for its people benefits Puerto Rico too. At the same time, I wonder if Puerto Rico's ultimate destiny is independence, and its selfish of the United States to keep it even if the island gains statehood. "West communist music" doesn't exist. Every country in the Americas has it's own style.

I'm so glad it failed, that the island got annexed by the US, and that I am an American citizen because of it.

      >When your countrymen get killed, your culture is brutally suppressed for 60 years, and you can’t vote or have representation in the government, but it’s okay because you get a US passport.
This isn’t the worst comment I’ve seen on this channel, but it’s definitely up there.

@@GETchan Remember that independence leaders were literally purged in the 50s, and "independence" became an evil word akin to communism in the USA. So people here today, especially young ones, still view independence as the boogeyman that will plunge us into civil war and hunger because "we're too small" *never mind the fact that countries that are much smaller exist and actually do better than us in everything, or that we're already being relegated to poverty by the colonial system anyway* Puerto Rican "politics" is one big depressing meme.

Very true. I was also being quite generous when I said 60 years, as I was just counting the time under US rule from the handover to the end of the gag law. Really, it was illegal to even own a Puerto Rican flag from 1868 to 1957, be it the Lares one or the current Cuban-inspired one, let alone actually speak out against the US government. If owning a Puerto Rican flag in the privacy of your own home could get you 10 years in prison, I can only imagine what happened to those who actively spoke out. (Well, not really. They were pretty obviously killed.)

GETchan One of the main independence activists, Pedro Albizu Campos, was subjected to radiation as a sort of lab rat while in prison. He died shortly after being released from prison from the damage he received. Horrifying stuff.
