The irony of that whole thing is that as soon as Atari made a working prototype of Pac-Man, the company decided it was close enough and that's what they massed produced
I got Atari 50 for my Nintendo Switch. It's more than just a game. It also includes documentary videos. The first console I played video games on had to be the Atari 2600.
Along came ATARI... then had their ass handed to them buy NINTENDO! Pretty funny Nintendo wanted Atari to release the NES in the states for them and Atari passed. That's what you call a giant fuck up!
D Wreck I honestly think it was a smart move for Atari NOT to distribute the NES, though something good could have come from it, I am not sure what though, but look at what Nintendo did to up and coming toy company Wolds of Wonder when they did distribute the NES for them... they left them with a loss, and the company had to close...
It wasn't just a Nintendo vs Atari thing, if you paid attention, it was a series of bad decisions before the nes was out, even in japan that lead to Atari's demise...
Jshaw71 That is not the point that was trying to be made. The point was if Atari distributed the NES here, it would have saved their asses. But they declined and paid big time for it.
CF-105 Games It may not have been the point that you were trying to make, but that was mine, I doubt very seriously that if Atari had promoted the nes, in america, it would have been good for them, look at how they (nintendo) treated worlds of wonder, once the NES was a hit, they turned their backs on world of wonder, and left them for dead, and die they did, sadly...
Sadly the current owners of the Atari brand is using it for NFTs & Loot Boxes, not to mention that the 2020 VCS console is a scam, not paying its architect Rob Wyatt (who also worked on the OG Xbox & PS3) I just hope that one day, someone will come along & give the brand a reboot, it looks like it’s in dire need of one
gsmith601 They made a mistake, it was a commercial Success but looking back at it today it would be considered a commercial Failure due people Getting refunds for the games
I saw another documentary where the programmer said he wasn't done with PacMan and Atari released it anyway. It was only a very rough demo to show management his progress. I remember hating the game but I played it anyway because the games cost $35 and back in the early 80s that was a lot of money. I should have told my parents to take it back.
They released the VCS a couple years back but it got discontinued. Now in 2023 the future should hold the Gamestation, a mini arcde port thing and a handheld retro thing
Sadly that system's development has some shady history, devs haven't been paid or even treated well, that's one legendary gaming brand that's been disgraced
Thanks for the uploads, was nice to find these online, always nice to look back at game history, But, I am not sure what was worse, Noaln shelling off Atari to Warner Communications, or Jack Tramiel firing who knows how many staff members at Atari...
Jshaw71 Well if Bushnell hadn't sold Atari to Warner, the VCS never would have been released and consoles possibly home video games wouldn't exist. As for Jack Tramiel without him home computers wouldn't be popular because they would still be too expensive. It was thanks to Jack and the Vic 20 later the Commodore 64 that made home computers popular. The Commodore 64 is still the best selling computer of all time BTW.
I suppose that is true, about the CVS not being produced, I am not sure about tramiel making home computer that popular, but I could be wrong... I could see that being the case, the C64 being the best selling home computer, I had little doubt of that...
Jshaw71 The Vic 20 was the first computer to sell 1 million units, and the C64 is the known as the definitive computer of the 1980's. Apple may have created the market with the Apple II but Commodore was the ruler of the market before the IBM PC with the X86 chip.
There are a bunch of Atari Flashback Consoles with built in games install in the console. They cost cheap I'm a collector and I have Atari Flashback consoles I through 4
Leonard Herman is incorrect. Atari didn't make more E.T. cartridges than there were systems. VCS Pac-Man was known for that, not E.T. Atari only made about 4 million E.T. carts, at a time when there were over 10 million systems. Also, most of the E.T. carts didn't end up in a landfill.
The entire beginning of this video is people going "actually the Brown Box/Odyssey were bad so they dont count at all" Put respect on Ralph Baer's name
I can say good program. Used to see this back when it was on TV and G4 was still cool and not like a dead horse. Sad to see it go out but nothing lasts forever.
I wish you can bring back the show but on a different channel please it’s a great show and can you do the Atari Jaguar the console is good you know okay
Well coke was really cool at the time which was the 1970's and 1980's and said either needed an accountant from Zurich or is said to be $100 a gram at the time to get coke.
I never was a fan of the Gamemakers retooling of Icons. it cut some stuff out within including Al Alcorn talking about the sale to Warner "all of a sudden it's Real Money in the bank" & Bill Kunkel talking about Breakout to name a few.
I'll never ever understand why E.T. is known to be the worst game ever. It's really not that bad. I mean what about Sneak 'n Peek??? Freaking Hellen Keller would have hated that one.
I'm going to have to disagree with something that was said in this program. Basically the guy said that Atari was the most bold and decimated name in the industries history and I think he's wrong. The boldest video game company in history has to be Sega circa 1989-1996 and I'll tell you why. In 1989 Nintendo held approximately 85% of the American video game market. They were an unstoppable juggernaut that broke the law with impunity and they essentially starved the competition. Sega took a beating from 1986-1988 and took dead last even behind Atari who really didn't show up to the party. Sega returned one more time to our market and from Christmas of 1989 they began one of the most effective, vicious ad campaigns in history. They took Nintendo apart like it was nothing and in doing so gained dominance over the biggest game playing region in the world. They went from 9% of the market to 65% and held that lead until mid '95 when Sega of Japan stupidly decided to discontinue the Genesis in North America.
Ehh Then the 32x and the saturn... Sega fumbled so bad they went 3rd party and make games that you can play on Nintendo systems now Nintendo has the last laugh
I like the video but I hate this company cause for 1 reason they destroyed the video game industry with Pacman, E.T. and other 3rd Party companies porting there bad games to the 2600 Nintendo for life !
I was 9 or 10 when I first watched this. Along with the other icon episodes honestly these were so cool to learn about
Man. I really miss G4.
Yes you do I wish they could bring back the show but on a different channel
News today is its coming BACK
@@ComicBookNostalgia I wish it hadn't now :/
The crazy thing is that my first exposure to Pac-Man was the 2600 version.
The irony of that whole thing is that as soon as Atari made a working prototype of Pac-Man, the company decided it was close enough and that's what they massed produced
Yikes
I love that they started a company with a name that even they can't pronounce....that might have been the original troll 🤣 😂
I would have felt like a legend if i worked in ATARI
Such classics but weed was the inspiration with these games XD!
Also hard to believe games used to look like this and that Atari was king before Nintendo but that is the history.
Oh look, Midnight Spank.
...
God, I miss G4.
It was the best channel ever for gaming, but around 2005 it started to go downhill...
I miss this show so much. And Attack of the Show. and X Play.
about 3 or 4 years ago, I decided to get my 1st tattoo. I got the Atari logo inked on my left arm.
Atari is making a new console right now as I'm writing this
Spiffy Gamingtm yup the Atari box when i heard about it i was thinking about this video and how they said and u never know what the future will hold.
Spiffy Gamingtm today is exactly 40 years since the famous legendary Atari vcs 2600 came out happy 40 year's of console gaming.
And it's a piece of shit

Back when Americans dominated videogames
Atari fumbled the bag so hard they crashed the entire video game industry of the Western World in 83

Atari is coming back with Atari VCS in 2019
