What more can be said about this superb rendition of Clarence Ashley's Honey Babe, with the always glorious voice of Maria Muldaur and equally glorious guitar work of Doc and Merle Watson, both of whom having now left us and in the case of Merle much, much too soon, and also with David Grisman on Mandolin, David Lynley on Lap Steel Guitar, John Kahn on Bass, and Jim Gordon on Drums. I have listened to this recording too many times to count and never get tired of it..
Maria has recently teamed up with Tuba Skinny out of New Orleans! Interesting stuff! I used to see Doc Watson at the Ashgrove in West Hollywood and I used to see Maria Muldaur there with Jim Kweskin et al.
Doc was one of my favorites from the first time I saw him here twice in Tampa with Merle probably in the late 70's early 80's at the Peanut Gallery Pub and a couple of times later with Jack.
I also heard Doc Watson play this song with his son, Merle. And I heard Doc Watson play another song with his father-in-law, Gaither Carlton. I liked hearing Maria Muldaur who learned to play fiddle from him sing this song.
Although there are many references to Maria learning to play fiddle from Doc (See links in video description as they aren't allowed in comments) She actually learned to play fiddle on Doc's porch with Doc accompanying no doubt from Doc's father in law Gaither Carlton. Straight from Maria

I'd bet anything that is Merle Watson playing slide. It's totally his style and the whole production of this song reeks of Doc and son. And Grisman on Mandolin.
Thanks, forgot about this gem ❤ 😊
A beautful song

Just saw Maria Muldaur at a concert in my home town.Maria still sounds amazing and is lovely and feisty. Keep on singin Maria!!!
Thanks. This song is the best. Hadn't heard it for about 25 years. I can't stop playing it.
Check out " Red Rocking Chair" on Billy Strings EP. ❤

Flavor man!
T. Michael Coleman just brought me here from the wonderful new FB site "Pick It Son."
Doc was one of my favorites from the first time I saw him here twice in Tampa with Merle probably in the late 70's early 80's at the Peanut Gallery Pub and a couple of times later with Jack.
Thanks for the great pictures! I haven't seen some of those before.

I love this. Classic. :)
You could have slipped a few photos of Maria in the montage !
Well the references didn't make it in the video description either but the father in law part came from Maria in an interview
You are probably correct sir It was an all star cast by any measure
See the link in the description
i love you
She didn't learn to play fiddle from Doc, but from his father in law, Gaither Carlton, who was a fine Old time fiddler.
Merle was in the credits Along with all these folks -- check this out

David Lindley played Hawaian guitar on this track. I guess he's playing the slide.
I'd bet anything that is Merle Watson playing slide. It's totally his style and the whole production of this song reeks of Doc and son. And Grisman on Mandolin.
Is that even possible?
Was Doc playing on this recording???? I need to drag out my album and check out the credits on the cover.
there are lots of cool folks including Doc and Merle too I think
@@mhandley i definitley have to check the cover out.
Yes, that's Doc, Merle and David Grisman for sure.
That is Doc saying 'Sing it gal sing it."
