in a car or light duty truck the transmission uses syncro's to aid in gear change which clutchless shifting would burn up. In heavy trucks they don't use syncro's and allows for the clutchless shifting. Also light duty transmissions use helical cut gears for noise reduction, and have a single countershaft. Heavy's have spur(straight) cut gears and in most twin countershafts however there are some with 3 countershafts and some medium duty that use a single with synchro's that you do clutch.
Those old detroits sounded great and they ran like hell on the level, they were plain fast.On the hills however, you better be early with those gears, because you can't allow the rpms to fall off too far with you like in a cat, cummins or mack. You let the rpms fall too low and you had to skip some gears down in the box or it's gonna stop on you.
That was very true for the 6/71 the 6v92 and 8v92 were not bad, ya you dropped gears a little sooner with the old detroits drop a gear and slam the foot to the floor again lol. I never got to drive a truck with a 6/71 I've talked to a few guys that had one of the guys used to drive and old Ford with a 5+4 behind it.
You can upshift or downshift easily (without touching the clutch)as long as you match your travel speed to the correct gear and rpm. Totally different from a car's trans.
"power shifting" and "clutchless shifting" are 2 totally different things. As for doing it in a car or pickup...it's not even anywhere around the same. A tractor trailer trans will almost completely "fall" into gear if you're close to the match of speed and rpms. In a car or pickup the match has to be almost perfect to keep from ruining the trans (if done repeatedly).
Its mostly a something I do and do not even realize I do it..It is the same pattern I have been told between like gears? I do it almost the same way between the same gears every time?
just a question. first I'm watching these videos, to help me with driving school, I'm watching to see how people double shift, but I don't see your left foot moving. how are you shifting?
+dcijams hes floating the gears, that means no clutch. most drivers only need to use the clutch to start and stop. one the truck is in gear you can match the rpms up and it will slide right into the next gear
@dcijams..i went to trucking school in st louis and you have to double clutch for your driving test as well as in school but once you get out on your own you pretty much just speed shift ,power shift ,float the gears ..whatever you want to call it but it's been 2 yrs since your comment so i'm sure you already know this..
actually looks like a 1990 9100 internation... maybe 9300... but it looks like a 1990 don't ask how I know... road ranger 9 speed... 3.56 I believe on the rear ends and does about 85 mines an hour at 2k... probably a 3406b engine
+James60470 ...Two-stroke Detroits run their best near the top of the RPM range. I have driven some 8V-71 engines that were governed at 2600 RPM along with "gutted" mufflers or straight pipes. That roar was sweet music indeed!
his hand movements before waiting to shift to the next gear are priceless
Smoothest ride I've ever had in a big ass truck. Layin on my ass watching you ride. Hell yeah.
That old 8V92 sounds great. Nice truck.
for all those who think Charlie is jammin gears or showing off, this is considered driving the truck easy/normal to him

You can't beat the sound of a old Detroit.
i love it the 8v92 ti is a bad ass motor and the world record holder in the quarter mile in a semi has a 8v92 tta
Non synchro truck gearbox = clutch-less shifting no brainer really its all to do with timing..
Anyway great sounding beast....
I love that engine
Everyone calm down about speeding hes driving a two stroke lol
Yes..In a box..Some used parts and some new parts but every thing has been purchased and just waiting for time to do the install..

handle big blue bro. i loved how he adjusted the wheel.
love the 2 stroke
Nice truck, video, and camera!

***** its not that hard. I can do it it my pickup. It just takes practice.

Truck is badass man
Shifting like the ruber duck
that's a good front door truck right there....
love those little chevy's - 4x4?
Nevermind he going twice the speed limit
that truck sounds like a racing car. Nice ! What model is that?
If you don't keep the rpms up in an old Detroit, you also won't be able to keep oil in it.
It is an International Eagle with a 8V-92 Silver Detroit Diesel.
you some crazzzyyyy!!!!!!
What truck is this?
letsdig18 is these old 2 strokes banned in some states for their emissions or some shit. there a beautiful sounding beast
Sounds like a hot rod. I have a slow truck so I have to shift like that just to get through intersections.
Recent video or did you film it long ago?
Screemin Demon !!!
sounds like a hot rode what kind of truck was it
What kind of truck is that? Sounds like that truck has a Detroit Diesel under the hood.
Hauling the mail..
was that clutchless?
can you do a video telling and show ing how to gear jam i wat to try it with r 78 f350
u use a gopro? no wonder u get such good shots
Good thing the 5-0 buy their dirt from Charlie!

I will not be doing this in school, I think drummers would no how to do this easily. I was a horn player
letsdig18 y

man no need to go so fast letsdig18
the gears sync and fall into place. the rpm's and timing r good. all without pushing clutch.
look in his earlyer vids its a detroit av92 im pretty sure of that and its a kenworth
any good driver only uses a clutch to start and stop
RTO14613...13 speed..
what year is big blue
Cool, but I think its still cool of you to downshift in order to slow down. nobody does that anymore.
15 speed?
MERICA
interesting.
...doubly so to hear my comment used in context.
Got jakes?
OMG DETROIT DETROIT DETROIT DETROIT DETROIT DEEEEEEESZZZZZZUULLLLL MY FAVERITE
no jakes?
Mph?
What Axle Ratio are you running?
3.90 if i remember right.
Thanks.
13 speed
tell Charlie to make more videos
I thought he was drag racing.
if your not loaded you can skip half of those gears and cut out a lot of work.
there goes $20 or $30 worth of fuel haha
if you hold it to the floor long enough something will happen eventually
actually looks like a 1990 9100 internation... maybe 9300... but it looks like a 1990 don't ask how I know... road ranger 9 speed... 3.56 I believe on the rear ends and does about 85 mines an hour at 2k... probably a 3406b engine
+dont need to know my fault it is a 13 spd
13 speed 8v-92 silver series Detroit 2 stroke. and 3.90 rears
9370 international
1987 year model
Yeah your ass will go fast and you will burn fuel..I ran these engines in tugboats and we would run them full throttle for days/weeks at a time..
1987
can someone just tell me how to reverse one of these things? my daughters dad is out of town and i want to drive his truck to walmart.
Uh you put it in reverse
+Isaac record is it up or down? or to da left?
+sablenote Up on the left usually
+Isaac record k thanks
how did it go?
please backup your statement, I'd love to learn why
13 or 18 speed
I lik how a Detroit sounds to but over reving ain't driving. Over rev is for no truck shifters. He knows how just not when
Detroits SOUND like they are over revving. But in fact they actually hold the same RPM.
+sharn walton Detroit's are inherently loud no matter what you do.

International 9300
Seat belts need not apply
your good driving, but not using your seat belt not a good idea
i love it the 8v92 ti is a bad ass motor and the world record holder in the quarter mile in a semi has a 8v93 tta
No 8V93tt
