The ABEETE Self-inking Fountain Pen: Does it work? Is it worth a try?

  • This pen was sent out from ABEETE's Amazon shop for me to test out and show you. In this video I'm unboxing it, filling it, and testing it out.
    It's a really interesting pen, and probably a great fit for someone who doesn't want to deal with any potential messes or extra fuss. There will be a mechanism available that allows you to fill the bottle with other inks, and that should be available soon. The ink it comes with is a perfectly nice black, though, so that's going to fit the bill for a lot of people who might want to try this sort of pen.

    This is pretty cool looking. Definitely not going to buy it anytime soon though lol. On a separate note, I received my order today and I was so thrilled by the teeny tiny turtle you included with the pen rests. It was adorable but I gave it to my mom who's obsessed with turtles. Can't wait to try the borahae!

      I'm glad you liked the turtle, and I hope your mom likes it even more! Enjoy the Borahae!

    This makes me wonder if/when someone will do something similar but for some kind of cartridge. The benefits being 1) reusable cartridges, less landfill and 2) a cartridge wouldn't be tied to a specific pen.
    This actually reminds me that TWSBI has their Diamond 580 "remove the section, fill the pen" system with their glass ink pots. Not the same but sorta.

    • @inkdependence
      @inkdependence  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, it's similar in that it has a self-contained little pot of ink to fill from, anyway. As for cartridges, this is sort of what we do with empty cartridges and a blunt syringe.

      I like the idea of a system like this for cartridges .

    That filling system is fire 🔥
    It's too bad the pen itself is a bit underwhelming, but if this is their first model I can see it being popular enough for them to expand their pen selections. This is one of those things that Im tempted to purchase just for the historical context because I have a feeling that other manufacturers are going to try to follow suit with their own versions.

      It's a good idea, and I think it is going to work out well for a certain segment.

    Great for the at work office where re-inking a pen could be tricky and messy.

    • @inkdependence
      @inkdependence  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Definitely! No need to wipe a nib off, even. Very clean.

    You got the brand right - Pelikan - that the only thing in common with the Abeete/OASO is it fills through an opening in the end of the barrel. The Pelikan is the Level, and there were 2 models. The L65 came out first for students in 1996 then the L5 came out the next year. I have an L5 with a Broad nib that I acquired from a seller in Germany and it was NOS. They quit making them in 2001. Want to learn more search for "pelikan level l5 manual' and missing-pen has all kinds of information. Oh, by the way the ink well can be refilled using the older ink refill bladders, but it's tricky.

      Thanks for the info. I went looking for disassembly and manuals, and it's an interesting pen. Not much like this ABEETE pen at all, though. Cool.

    This is an interesting innovation (I assume, not having seen anything like this before) and it certainly seems to take the mess out of the inking process (wait, no more inky fingers? what will we do?). I hope it catches on so we will see some additional pen models without the triangular section, which I dislike. Maybe someone will reverse-engineer this and start selling a clone of it, just for the irony. Anyway, I have ordered one ($28 today) and it will arrive next Thursday (even on Prime).

      There was a Pelikan that was kinda like this a long while back called the Level L5, but I don't know if it worked the same way. It was kinda similar, though, in that it filled from the back with an ink pot, but I've never used one and they haven't made it in a long time. Hope you enjoy yours!

      The set arrived today, and works as advertised. I do have a question, which is how do you clean it out? How do you even empty it? Then I began to wonder if the pen could be loaded with a blunt syringe. I tried one, and it fits quite snugly, so I may just try to see what I can do with that. But it's clear you can't flush it that way, there's no room for the water to come out. I may try to write to them to see what they say about cleaning it out.

    • @inkdependence
      @inkdependence  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ah! You can just unscrew the section and wash it out with a syringe.

    But I couldn't find a listing for the N580 ink filler anywhere.

    Thanks, Mike. That's a pretty cool pen and fill system. Do nibs not need a breather hole?
    I'm kinda new here and was wondering what the green fingernail means. I figured that I was just an old fart that ain't hip, so I asked my son and he said that he didn't know either. Does it mean something or is it just something that you like to do?

    • @inkdependence
      @inkdependence  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Nope. Nibs don't always need a breather hole. Feeds work in lots of ways, and this one probably breathes from the bottom of the feed. That fingernail was just left over from St. Patrick's Day, but I do sometimes paint a nail or two. Sometimes a polished nail can mean that the guy is supporting the Polished Man project.
