When you basically say that although the dog is important,a person should value their family more, I for sure agree. A man that values a dog more than his wife,kids or grandkids has issues and may not have their ethics in the Right place. I ain't some nutty animal rights activist,so the life of my wife,kids and even the life of a certain toddler that claims me as his grandpa even though biologically I'm not,his life is also more important than the life of a dog.
I've been through a few dogs(both my dogs and other's) and i am struggling to find dogs that have what i want. I consider myself new to this working dog world, I've been doing this just for a few years. I can say that until like 1 year ago or more i used to be crazy with dogs with a lot of prey drive, but after seeing a good amount of dogs being worked, i have the impression most of these dogs only have prey, but dont have actual aggression and these who have some, they usually only works in obvious situations, like the decoy confronting them. I am looking for a dog that can work alone in most situations. A dog that will enter in a state of defense and then work in aggression. I think a good defense drive is really important for a 'sentry/home defense dog'. What do you think about this? I am asking because it's hard to find people talking about guard dogs(not personal protection) on the internet, or even videos testing their dogs in this type of situation. Can you talk more about why do you think a dog like Patches is flawed?
The ideal dog should not be one dimensional...not just prey driven and not just defense driven...but have both. Patches is lower on prey, and while dogs like that can be good for home protection, they do not do as well for personal protection off their home property. The ideal dog can work in any environment.
You would have to raise them up young about them and even then I would not recommend one for livestock guardian. Livestock guardians tend to be lower prey drive and more independent.

Just wondering if you've seen any IVDD type problems developing over time with these longer backs on the Sentinels?
