Welcome to the Joseph Story House at 26 Winter Street, Salem, MA. This is a magnificent restoration and renovation of a
National Landmark with every amenity and convenience for comfortable contemporary living in the
vibrant North Shore City of Salem, just steps to commuter rail and ferry to Boston, water recreation
and the world class Peabody Essex Museum.
This quiet and private oasis is just steps from the Salem Common and downtown.
The impressive grounds are professionally landscaped, with irrigation, and accented by a large four-level water
fountain, patios, outdoor lighting and a circular driveway from Winter Street to Oliver Street.
This home has hosted Presidents and dignitaries, artists, students, teachers, family and friends.
From intimate small gatherings and casual entertaining to elegant dinners and large events for
over 60 guests , the Joseph Story House is the perfect venue with flow and function for
entertaining as well as a comfortable home for every day living.
As you enter the vestibule and entry hall, you step back in time to 1811 when this house was
built for Joseph Story, the same year he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, the youngest
Supreme Court justice to date. The house is A National Historic Landmark and also on the National
Register of Historic Places and was awarded the National Par Service Underground Railroad Network
to Freedom based on Justice Story’s decision in the case of the slave ship Amistad.
The home contains what may be among the last of Samuel McIntire carved mantles, chair rails and moldings. . The house
represents three centuries of history and architecture. The 7,000 square foot, brick 3-story Federal
residence underwent major restoration and renovation by the current owners from 2006 to 2009.
Working closely with historic architect Richard Long of Newport, RI and the Salem Historical
Commission, the project included replacement of 1950’s garage with a new brick “carriage house” wing
that contains a magnificent kitchen, pantry, pergola porch, two-car heated garage, and loft media room.
Historically significant and LEED certified, the Joseph Story House is the first National Historical
Landmark residence to receive this coveted designation.
Entry hall leads to living room with high ceilings, hardwood floors and a fireplace mantel
of Samuel McIntire wood carving, glass pocket doors, crown molding and interior wood shutters.
Also off the main hall, the dining room with distinctive built-ins for storage and entertaining (a wet
bar with SubZero beverage refrigerator and ice maker) flank another McIntire mantled fireplace.
The family room is paneled in turn-of-the-century quarter sawn oak, another south-facing warm room
with large bay window area accommodating an ample round table.
For the cooks in the family, the custom, gourmet chef’s kitchen has every feature and amenity: 6 burner with griddle Wolf Stove, double Sub-Zero refrigerator-freezers, 3 sinks and 2 dishwashers, a microwave oven, gas and electric ovens, pantry
with a recycle chute, a screened porch and open sitting porch overlooking the fountain and patio area
with privacy created by trees and garden.
Off the kitchen there is a home office, ample coat
closets for the family and back hall to the garage and a full media/game room over garage with a wet bar
and SubZero refrigerator and ice maker .
This hallway also leads to the main staircase and front office.
The first level has 2 half baths. An elevator can be accessed on 4 levels. There is security and sound
systems throughout the house and 5 fireplaces.
Ascend the front grand staircase which takes you to the magnificent Master Suite accented with built ins, and featuring a laundry chute, radiant heat and two dressing rooms.
French doors lead to a private sitting area with a balcony over the portico - the perfect spot for your morning coffee or tea.
Relax in the luxurious master bathroom, anchored by a fireplace. A Bain-Ultra air-jet deep tub, and a separate shower with a steam unit complete this spa-like master bath.
The main house has two additional bedrooms, both with ample closets; a kitchenette and an additional full and half bath.
Accessible by a separate entrance from Oliver Street or from the main building are two guest
suites or apartments; a studio and fully equipped one bedroom. The apartments can be joined
together as a duplex, and also with optional use of the home’s elevator in a common connecting
    hallway.
This is a rare opportunity to live the life of distinction in this one of a kind, historic home on Boston’s North Shore.

Still on the market for $2.3MM. If I had money like that, I'd love to live in this house.

Not sure if it's on the market today, but that was a fantastic price for such a beautiful, historic home.

10 bedrooms and 3 full baths and 2 half baths? Not enuff bathrooms for that many bedrooms, so then guests have to share.odd! But it is very nice and spacious!

It's not odd when you consider the original build date of the house and that the restoration sought to preserve as much of that as possible.
