My taiwanese beauty used to be very shy and worried about people, but now I can let someone who never handled a snake ever hold her and handle her under supervision. She'd never bitten anyone beside me, and she now hardly ever bites me. I would have to really mess with her for several minutes and ignore her warnings for her to get upset to the point of biting. She doesn't care about her head or tail being messed with, she doesn't care about quick movements around her face, and she tolerates me grabbing onto her neck or head without getting startled or defensive about it. She might be 7ft long, but she's handleable for most people and she's made many people fall in love with snakes.
That’s awesome. Sometimes it just takes time and patience.
@@Pythonaddiction took me a month or so to be able to handle her without getting tagged.
My Taiwanese is a sweety. Nightcrawler is so awesome. My Vietnamese, Stitch, is a Dick.
@danielprice2743 vietnamese tend to be more defensive but they can be calmed down too ^^ weirdly enough, of the two I have handled so far, both pretty defensive, none of them bit me lol they only tried to bite people around me XD
That bci is beautiful!!
Thank you! I think she is absolutely beautiful too. I want albino to make albino blood babies
@Pythonaddiction that would be amazing!!!

@Pythonaddiction Thank you
Awesome video with lots of information thanks! I am contemplating getting a snake for the first time. I attended the Reptile Expo last week here in California looking for a nice pet. I am looking for something that will calm down and not be on the super defensive side. Everyone keeps telling me as far as personality and docile temperament, go with a young captive bred Corn Snake. Any thoughts on that? Thanks!
A corn snake is a great first choice option. They can be a bit darty as babies but aren’t usually defensive and easy to handle as they grow up.
Great video Jack. I just acquired a baby Trans Pecos rat snake. She is very defensive, strikes a lot, and occasionally bites. I was holding her every other day for about 20 minutes or so. However, I think that stressed her out even more. So, I’ve decided to only handle her once a week. She also stopped eating so I assume she is too stressed out, or she could be going into shed? Your thoughts?
If she’s in a new environment then she’s going to need some time to get used to it. As for handling and feeding. Try once a week with food and get her eating first. Make sure temperatures and humidity are good as well as making sure ambient temperature isn’t to low as that can trigger feeding issues. Hot spot should be in the mid to high 80’s with ambient in the 70’s. Hold off handling until you have gotten her eating first.
@ sounds good. Thx. Ambient temp in her tub is 77-79 degrees. The shop she is located in is temperature controlled. I typically drop the temperature overnight to 70 degrees. Humidity is around 45 %. I also have two Texas Indigo babies born this last summer, and a Yearling Texas rat snake. All are doing great other than my stressed out Suboc. I did contact the breeder and he also thinks I was probably handling her too much. 🤔
The rat snakes are a bit different from indigo’s and should have a warmer area like a basking spot or hide. For my blue beauty I use a radiant heat panel to provide an 86 degree basking spot and under tank pad to make a hide around 80 and keep ambient in the low 70’s. Not saying that you need all that but having a gradient is generally conductive to less stress.
Aside from that. The breeder is probably correct. You have a to work up to multiple times a week. That’s what I did with Ruka. It took me about half a year working with him to get him to become tolerant to 2x3 times a week handling.
Like I said, patience is truly the key.
@ okay. 👍 Thx for your input.
