Since I am disabled now it is nice that you two went up and hiked Half Dome. I was in Yosemite when I was a kid but didn't hike up Half Dome. Also, thank you for reviewing the history of the area. That is WORK going up there.
Having lived and worked in Curry Village from 1979 to 1984, I have climbed half dome via the cables and via the Snake dike route (easy by rock climbing standards). Yosemite valley and Tuolomne Meadows were a 2dn home to me from childhood through my time living there. As a child, my uncle lived and worked there for the park service, on and off, and while I was not aware of the privilege I had as a child being able to stay in the Ranger's Club and, later, in Ansel and Virginia's house behind the their photo gallery, I look back in absolute amazement. I recall, being 'low person on the totem poll' during a slow early Spring season, I was relegated to work in the Yosemite Valley grocery stores gift shop. I was humiliated until I saw a figure wander in the back door... Ansel Adams himself in his last trip to the valley to see the dogwood blooms. I, in total awe, introduced myself and explained my relationship to my uncle, an old friend of his. We chatted for about 1/2 hour before he left to wander the village. I was truly blessed that day.
@@jbenziggy Having only interacted with him that one time, so late in his life, I found him to be not only in good spirits, but humorous and jolly. While not only seeming to take in all of his surroundings, but he seemed to pay close attention to our conversation. While I cannot know for sure, I believe he knew this was his last trip to the valley. He had no camera equipment with him at the moment and I believe he was there to capture the moments in his memory, rather than on film. I could have spent days asking him questions, listening to any stories he might have told... but I was taken back by this 'out of nowhere' meeting and was totally unprepared and 'star struck.'
Enjoyed this segment, I don't think I could go up the cables, I have such a fear of heights. Kudos to both of you to make it to the top, breathtaking scenery and liked the history element.
Wow !! Did that bring back memories of my climb to the top of half done for my 38th Birthday. We got a late start and didn't get back to camp til after midnight. We had a tiny flash light to help us in the dark. Thought I was a goner for sure. That is one tough hike ! So enjoyed this video !! Thank you !
Thanks for this video! Loved the history surrounding Half Dome and the trail to it. I was at Yosemite last fall and did the hike to Vernal and Nevada falls. That hike seriously kicked my butt, can't imagine doing the extra distance to Half Dome, then having to scale the cables and hike all the way back. And I'm still in my late forties! Maybe I'll give it a go my next visit.
A trek i have thought about often but something has always came up it seemed so i never did make it there .. Great film of your adventure , it's a hike for sure more so when one is older .. You both did well , well done ..
Just found this!!!! What a great video, guys! This brings back memories of all the hiking and back packing I did over twenty years ago. Never made it to Yosemite so this is a treasure for me❤
One of my favorite places in the world. I’ve climbed half Dome so many times that I don’t remember the number. My family and I vacationed there every year growing up
@@jbenziggy my apologies for the bragging, basically typed what I was thinking to myself 😂. Thank you for the awesome videos. This one especially brought back some great memories.
Beautiful video Jeff & Sarah! I climbed it in 1991 and loved the views up there. A lady in front of us on the cables lost her sun hat and sun glasses when a gust of wind blew by us and we watched them slide down the rock side face. I don't thing I'll try it again though...
Ive started to go back and watch some of your older videos! It's been such a long time since Ive been to Yosemite, it makes me want to go back this summer. Ive never hiked half dome, maybe its something Ill try this summer.
Amazing!!! Wonderful adventure. I can never get up the misty steps just past the bridge. I’m afraid of heights. I loved your hike and story telling. Thank you so much.
I've been hang gliding and sky diving as well. You can watch the videos on my channel if your interested. Glad you enjoyed the presentation. Thanks for watching.
I subscribed to your channel a while back and still find myself amazed at the breadth and depth of your video offerings. This was another captivating great one that was a fantastic adventure and history lesson. Thanks.
I've been up Half Done 3 times. The last time I opted for the mule trail to Nevada Falls and was resting when 3 Cowboys came by. One said I was beautiful so I told him to give me a ride to Half Dome. They did. Easiest trip to Half Dome ever. Walked back down to the Valley and the guys waited at certain rest spots to make sure I got down safe. We had a great time and we were good friends for many years to come.
Thanks for the video! I just hiked up the cables with a big group yesterday and knowing the history behind a lot of the trail makes that accomplishmemt a lot more exciting.
@@jbenziggy yes! That is the case, our permit was for the sixth so we were turned away at the gate when we arrived on the fifth, however we decided to try again and explain that our Airbnb was inside the park so they gave us a permit for the three days. I'd expect that would be the case for anyone else booking Airbnbs inside the park, but I could be wrong there.
Great video guys. I was born and raised in CA and have never been inside Yosemite, just from Hwy 395 over the Tioga Pass to Hwy 49. Loved visiting it this way.
Hi Jeff what a breathtaking production you do I loved this vlog you did all the work and I just sat and loved every minute of it ! Can’t believe you don’t have way more views on this !

Vernal Falls brought back a memory. In the 70’s eight of us lugged an ice chest full of beer up those stairs. We called them The Stairway To Heaven after the Led Zeppelin song..
I would love to take a picture where Teddy Roosevelt stood. I named my son Theodore after the 26th president because I knew he was going to have an adventurous spirit. I loved the video and I had a feeling Jeff was a cradle robber since Sarah looks like she's in her 30s. I was born the year you first climbed half dome back in 1979. God, time moves so fast.
You can stand where Theodore Roosevelt stood. Have you seen our episode on retracing his 1903 Yosemite visit? Jeff is a cradle robber but I was 41 at the time of this hike. 😂
Loved your history lesson on the park.congratulations on how far you made it. On June 17 ,2015 ,3 of us made the same trek but one of us had to have a helicopter rescue off the top…accute altitude sickness…one of the other two had a difficult time going down even with tracking polls because of the pressure on (my) knees. Would love to try again but wisdom comes with age.
@@jbenziggy I had no idea that there was that much human improvements that far back in time and that far back in the wilderness. THANKS for bringing that to light. Even a 76 year old can still learn something new. I knew there was quite a bit done on the valley floor in the 1800's, but up among those granite cliffs makes me wonder, "How was that possible". But surely, if there's a will there IS a way.
A doctor friend of mine once said... If you don't attack your heart, your heart won't attack you! A helicopter ride from base camp to the top is only 9 minutes. A light lunch at the top with a glass of wine and then a quick flight back down, leaves plenty of time for other fun things to do. 😜
Awesome. Thanks for doing this video Are you going to try again sometime. Captain Kirk climbed El Capitan. I like the way Spock saved Kirk when he was falling using levitation boots.
My wife and I made this hike in 1994. It is a tough hike, but worth the effort. Are those gray squirrels still as annoying as they were back then? We left our packs at the bottom of the cables and a squirrel chewed a hole in my wife"s pack to get into some trail mix.
We didn't have any squirrels break in that I can remember. All I remember is the fantastic views and the very strenuous work getting up there and back before nightfall! Now if you could camp on top that would be amazing!
If a waterfall only has one major drop, such as Vernal and Nevada have, they are a "Fall". If there is more than one drop, such as Yosemite, it's a "Falls."
What a beautiful place I had to watch it twice to take in the views, I take my hat off to you both for hiking up there it wasn’t easy sitting in my armchair watching it. 😂🥵🥵
Were you out of breath in that chair? LOL. Thanks for watching and commenting! We very much appreciate you coming along with us to Half Dome, or close to it!
I could feel your pain and exhaustion as when I was in my 50's I walked up the Appalachian Trail on a 50 miler with the Boy Scouts. To me coming down was worse than going up and that was Sarah's second or third climb up the mountain?
I believe it was her third half to hike but she only made it to the top one time. It is one of the most physically challenging and grueling things I have ever done.
I made 3 attempts. First I made it to sub dome. Didn't make it up the cables because my shoes were too slick. 2nd time made it all the way. 3rd time had to stop before sub dome my hip was not able to take anymore upward climbing.
We have and will go to other states but we are limited. Keep in mind we have real jobs that pay the bills. We are not fortunate, right now, like some TH-camrs with bigger numbers to be able to do this full-time and live on TH-cam revenue. So for now we do what we can do when we have time to do it.
