It's so insane. 2024 will be my third election voting against Trump, and I could have written a better scene than this because I would have at least tried to premise the scene around "The liberal/politically agnostic guy is dumb and/or the girlfriend is dumb for voting for him."
I do not share Roseanne Barr's politics, but at least when her show came back on, it was actually attempting to tell constructed jokes about pro and anti-Trump family members not getting along. There would be punchlines built of faulty pro-Trump premises, but they were actual punch lines, so it came off as a sitcom and not a Trump commercial pretending to be a sitcom

Anyone remember _The 1/2 Hour News Hour_ that aired on Fox News in 2007? It was supposed to be a right wing version of _The Daily Show_ but it didn't last past a dozen or so episodes. What I like about _The Daily Show_ (at least with Jon Stewart as host) is the readiness to take jabs at both sides for stupid behavior. This show, however, had the single objective of going on a politically motivated screed by Fox News under the auspices of a comedy show. True comedy gold for all the wrong reasons!

I believe that conservative comedy and humor fails so often because their beliefs are such a part of who conservatives are, that they aren't capable of finding humor in themselves. So much about comedy and humor is about seeing things from different perspectives, deconstructing them and shedding light on the absurdities and flaws. Comedy makes you laugh AND think with an open mind.
But conservatives aren't known for being open-minded to say the very least. So they can't deconstruct their own deeply-held views without the risk of debunking them and having their whole worldview come crashing down. The cognitive dissonance is too much for them to face. So their attempts at humor end up being desperate defenses of their beliefs by attacking their perceived opponents for not sharing their conservative views.
It's why their comedy comes off feeling less like the insightfully humorous highlighting of flaws and contradictions and more like straight-faced, heavy-handed, and bitter diatribes that are meant more to get applause from the other bitter conservatives in the audience than actual laughs.
Wow that was impressive, deep and articulate! I agree with you, it requires a lot to do self-disparaging jokes and conservatives would rather look outward than inward.

I took a few philosophy classes in college, but I didn't major in the subject. I'd say it's more about personal observations. It often seems that the more conservative a group or a culture is, the less humor tends to exist. Conservatism is all about *conserving* their beliefs, and not questioning, deconstructing, or challenging them.
It's also about what I've observed in the nature of comedy. The punchline of a joke is often about the surprise of presenting you with concepts and ideas that are different from what you were expecting. It's often about challenging your expectations and assumptions. I look at comedians like the late George Carlin and shows like South Park that are probably the best at giving you something different, challenging your assumptions, and deconstructing subjects and issues from multiple angles.
The hallmarks of good comedy are speaking truth to power, punching upwards, fresh new takes on the way the world works, the ability for the audience to resonate with the protagonist's plight, and a kernel of unspoken shared truth that society either suppresses or misses. Conservatism finds humor in punching downward, every idea they have is stale by 40 years they turn grievance into rage rather than hapless foible, and nothing they stand for has any resonance outside of their own bubble, or any larger truth to it (or sometimes surface-level truth either). So they're doomed to fail over and over again.
There ARE ways to make funny Conservative characters, and also to make characters whose resonance comes in pointing out uncomfortable truths about Liberal orthodoxy, but Conservatives are so overcome by layer upon layer of resentment that they can't pivot to anything else. This often hinders PMC Liberal comedy too, as the rage they feel overshadows the ability to poke fun at anything.
I agree, and this is something I've been thinking about lately and you put it down beautifully. I don't know if it's just the current political climate, but conservative "comedy" will take only focus on this oppositional spirit of comedy, treat it like something to be used to fight the culture war or whatever.
It's the reason why they'll say something horribly bigoted and claim it's a joke, then when someone else jokes about, say, JD Vance fucking couches, they'll act appalled - because they see all jokes as one group attacking another. They have given up on the "be funny" part of comedy, and if they laugh it's only due to the satisfaction of seeing their opponents hurt.

Friends dad paid us to tear down the old rotting shed on his property and we did that and made an Evil Dead knock-off in one weekend with horror make up and some basic lighting effects. Conservative comedy is stale (because their ideas are stale), mean (because that's what constantly punching downward emits), un-empathetic (because that is their worldview) and non-resonant, because the only jokes they find funny are based on conspiracy theories and strawmen that no one else believes in. For a Conservative character to be compelling (Hank Hill or Ron Swanson or Archie Bunker), it has to be written by a Liberal who understands how humor works.
It's also just too angry and self-serious. Any semblance of a joke gets lost in their foaming-at-the-mouth ranting.

BTW, I just rewatched it. It's such a strawman that the mother-girlfriend doesn't even let him get his first point out about "I don't like what he said..." before she's already interrupting him. It's not just the fact that her character has a perfect rebuttal to every line (since she wrote the show), they don't even get to the adversarial points before preemptively knocking them down. Did Trump say that Megyn Kelly was bleeding from wherever? Sure, but that doesn't really have anything to do with his presidency. Did he say he's going to open up the libel laws that he can sue journalists into bankruptcy for criticizing him? That's kind of a big deal, even if he hasn't fully done it yet.

@@gnomechomsky2524 an SM58 is a cheap (but commonly used) directional dynamic mic, generally used by singers, ie people speaking directly into the mic from a few inches away. It is not made or generally used as an “overhead” mic, for capturing rooms; the sound you’d get is something like what you hear in this video. For capturing dialogue on a movie set you’d use boom mics that designed especially for the purpose of picking up voices from a larger distance, and can be moved around by the boom operator if needed (as opposed to a microphone just dangling from the ceiling as he jokes here).

I think in the same vein there was a garbage show on a black family. At one point the daughter brings home the love of her life, who's a good man, but an atheist. Not even a militant one, just not believing.
