It was arguably either way, since the disc itself wasn't being changed permanently, but it was no longer meeting the shape of the disc specifications. Which went into the approval process of the disc, so the shot was legalish. Basically the disc was approved, which is where the shape and specifications of the disc are regulated. Which is why the PDGA clarified the rule change that the disc must be in a saucer like shape.
The move with the DGA special Steady Ed plastic putter Blowfly/II or Gumputt/driver is impossible to do now within the rules and there is a reason, that brand DGA, then one brand that only makes floppy silicone discs to not modify the disc shape when throwing unless disc happened to hit something that caused the disc to change shape beforehand on the course or a minor mistake in molding.
Yes, as long as that rule of discs needing to be in original shape when thrown is not taken too literally as in older discs that have this or discs that did not quite mold up correctly.
