I saw this when it originally came out in theaters, and it was instantly one of my absolute favorite films. The storytelling, the acting, the set design, how it was filmed and, most especially, the film's score. I loved the music for this film. Just the whole atmosphere the music brought to the film. I loved the backstory of Ichabod's childhood and how it shaped who he became. Christina Ricci was amazing as Katrina. And I love the mystery of trying to find who is controlling the horseman and why he seems to be targeting specific people. I never tire of watching this film. There were two stunt doubles for the horseman, one for the horse-riding scenes and one for the fight scenes. Ray Park, who played Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace, was the double for the fight scenes.

The first victim is played by Martin Landau in what is effectively a cameo. He had won an Oscar for co-starring, along with Depp, in Tim Burton's "Ed Wood". The magistrate is played by Christopher Lee, who has one of the longest lists of credits in film history. Though set in upstate New York, they found a more appropriately grim and gothic filming location in England. Also this production borrows elements from the 1949 animated Disney film "The Adventures Of Ichabod And Mr. Toad", ( not to mention the flaming windmill from "Frankenstein" ) and spotting those references is a bonus for movie fans. For his part, Christopher Walken, not an expert rider, was seen in his closeups atop a mechanical horse. And, across the board, you can't fault the casting. A assembly of very good actors who love having something dense and interesting to work with.

Lady Van Tassel's fate is that when the Horseman got his head back and returned to Hell, he took her with him. So her soul went to Hell with him and her body was left behind inside the tree where he's buried. It essentially IS death in every sense of the word.

Halloween has a long history, actually. Even romans had Feralia, which was a day when souls of the dead were believed to walk the earth, and people used to bring offerings to the graves and tombs. Also, the fireworks on new year's eve were originally meant to scare away bad spirits by the loud bangs. The idea of spirits walking the earth on a certain day, and the need to scare them away, or please them by some offerings, probably exists as long as human civilization does.

Van Garrett is a Dutch name as much of this region of New York was settled by the Dutch in the 1600's. Sleepy Hollow is located north of Manhattan near Tarrytown along the Hudson River. New York was formerly called New Amsterdam (also New Nederland) until the British claimed it and renamed it in honor of the Duke of York.

Having not seen this film in maybe 20 years, I forgot how gory it was -- much more so than "Sweeney Todd."
And, yes, the fact that you have Emperor Palpatine, Professor Dumbledore, Vernon Dursley, Principal Rooney, and Alfred Pennyworth all in one scene makes this film all the more epic (not to mention Saruman/Count Dooku in another).

Hi Mary! I love so much the head spin you tried to make. That's the reaction everyone loves to see. It seems like you enjoyed this as much as we all did. If you are interested to see more Depp, watch, "Finding Neverland". Thanks

Delightful commentary, as always!! You may also want to take a look at the charming American TV series "Sleepy Hollow," which ran from 2013 to 2017 and featured the handsome English actor Tom Mison as Icahbod Crane, transported from the past to present day (making for some amusing fish out of water stuff) and enlisted by American policewoman (the funny and feisty Nicole Beharie) to fight supernatural crimes of a very clever and colorful sort while trying to get back. An entertaining and endearing series. Tailed off in the final season when Beharie left.

If you want some underrated Johnny Depp.. "Don Juan de Marco".. I don't want to spoil anything about it.. But it's great . "The Ninth Gate" a horror thriller.. would have been good for Halloween.. also "Nick of Time" one of his earliest bigger films... Pre dates the "real time" TV craze of "24".. it's a taut action thriller..

That old man at the beginning should have asked the headless horseman if he liked to wrestle.

I live on the Hudson River, about an hour's drive north of Sleepy Hollow. The folk there have quite a Halloween celebration every year and the cemetery has lots of famous people like Washington Irving himself.

If you like musicals, Sweeney Todd (2007) is another great Tim Burton & Johnny Depp production with this dark style and spilling blood. A good show about witches is Salem (2014-2017), no Tim Burton or Johnny Depp this time, but the same dark horror style (and it's a bit Game of Thronesy, if you know what I mean.)

Christopher Lee has a history with Hammer Horror. He played Dracula in the Hammer Horror Dracula movies. He is one of the scariest versions of the character.

Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed... North America has so relatively few folk tales compared to other places, but the headless horseman is still one of my favorite!

If memory serves, in an interview Depp said that he based his performance on a pre-pubescent Angela Lansbury (unknown if he was kidding or not about this)

The judge in the beginning is the late and legendary Christopher Lee from Dracula to Star Wars, Ian McDiarmid from Star Wars and Ray Park from Star Wars. Great reaction!
