    I wonder why more celebs don’t just go into venture capital or become investors..I love Rihanna but would never trust her takes on my 4c hair 😂 like she could have been an investor to scale a smaller black woman owned business doing the same thing. Just my take! I feel like ultra rich celebs could/should engage with free markets in a different way but that’s a whole other topic lol.

      Yes exactly!! There’s some small brands doing very interesting stuff and actually looking trying to fix unanswered issues, but they lack the investment. There’s already a billion of products that can give my hair “shine”, “moisture”, etc etc etc

  • @angeleeshaw

    My theory - this is probably wishful thinking - is that celebrity culture is dying and they are feeling the effects of that. So now they are all doing these brand deals/cash grabs. Its a good thing imo. I'd much rather buy something that was made with the consumer in mind. Not something designed to make a celebrity wealthier.

    • @polynarcs

      I highly doubt Rihanna needs to do a cash grab, from all I have gathered about the way Rihanna runs her businesses, I hardly doubt she just woke up one day and decided to drop Fenty hair, this would have been in the word for ages, she also just became a billionaire on paper. While she may not have any immediate access to billions, she’s a billionaire. 😂

    • @polynarcs
      @polynarcs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That doesn’t sound like someone scrambling to make money, she also makes a good amount of money from her music, I can’t speak for the others, maybe you guys can educate me on why a billionaire would need to rush a cash grab…

      @@polynarcs music makes entertainers much less money since streaming, and it’s not nearly as lucrative as selling a product. You have to tour to make money off of your music. Rihanna is clearly done with that labor lol.

    I use Britney's perfumes. Legit great, my everyday perfume is Island Fantasy.
    My opinion is that the market is oversaturated in every way: too many brands, too many celebrities, now there are even influencers or social media famous personas competing with the likeness of celebrities, etc.
    I feel overwhelmed by the quantity of skincare and beauty brands there are out there. At least perfumes have unique smells that feel very personal and subjective to each person's taste. But like a lipstick or something like that...there are so many brands and so many products with the same shade...
    Also, i dont think people are so celebrity crazy fan as they used to be. I only see Taylor Swift moving that kind of fandom nowadays.

I also have supported Rare Beauty b/c of her intent for helping those who suffer from a disability in her packaging and her message of being comfortable in your own skin. One has catered and continues to cater towards skin inclusivity and one has pure intentions. No other celeb brand has made me feel authenticity.

    The only celebrity brand that i actively purchase is Good Dye Young by Hayley Williams, lead singer of Paramore. I constantly dye my hair bright and unnatural colors, and it's not easy finding something that's cruelty free and vegan at an affordable price (i don't buy Arctic Fox anymore because of certain scandals they've had and Manic Panic only goes so far, but it's okay in a pinch). It works so well with my hair, it's gentle, affordable, vibrant, and it helps that Paramore is my favorite band. Even then, when I can't buy it and I have to go for a cheaper alternative, or because they don't have my color, or some other reason, I don't get butthurt about it, but I do love the brand, and she actively uses it herself, so I trust her on that front with her product. Besides, she's been dying her hair since she was a teen, so knowing that her and her team spent all that time curating and creating a brand that promotes what i'm looking for in hair dye and promotes diversity in hair textures, well i have nothing negative to say about GDY!

    One youtuber, B'CentricTV, commented that the oversaturation of celebrity beauty and skin care brands tends to suffocate and choke small business owners who lack the attention capital and access to resources that celebs have. The downfall of celeb owned brands could be a good thing for small business owners who are actually trying to fill a gap in the market. They too can have a chance to succeed in an already heavily competitive marekt.

      Fenty is majority owned by LVMH. The same company that owns Louis Vuitton, givenchy, bvlgari, dior, Hennessy, fendi, mark jacobs, sephora, Hennessy etc.
      So your money for " black owned brands" is actually going to THE RICHEST MAN IN THE WORLD 😂😂😂😂😂. So not only is your money going to a white person, but its not even going to an ordinary white person, its going to the richest white person.
      In reality, people think Rihanna is just some ultra smart business woman but she really just is partnered with the biggest fashion and cosmetics company. Of course her brand was never going to flop with lmvh.

    • @Viviolau
      @Viviolau 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@howsie123 yes, I’m aware. I hope you didn’t think I literally thought all my money goes to one person. Like….you know there’s hundreds of employees that also get a cut I’d hope…
      I support black women and Rihanna set the vision for this business. She has business partners and many people with her to help build that. Including LVMH.
      I also noticed you skipped the part where I said I also give money to smaller black owned brands too. Chances are they have white employees/people in leadership roles too - should we not count that?
      Honestly, I don’t know if you’re purposely being dense because you don’t want to give her her flowers because she built that brand including making the connections to be able to partner with LVMH. I don’t care if she doesn’t own 100% of it - she had a vision and enacted it.
      Or maybe I guess a black woman has to do something all on her own to for it to count?
      Do we not support Mielle once a big stake gets bought by a big corps - does the work suddenly evaporate that the black female owner put in?
      Anyway, you sound like a salty person. Imagine reading someone saying they like to support black owned brands and finding a way to make it a negative by being purposely obtuse as if that person said the black owned brands need to not have any partnerships at all involving other big businesses.
      Exhausting.

    • @Viviolau
      @Viviolau 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@shaneking5246 I understand how shares work. Rihanna owned 49.99% of the stakes. LVMH owned 50.01. Does her partial ownership not count because of the that 0.02% difference?
      Let alone the fact she set the vision for it - LVMH invested in her vision and brand - Fenty is her last name. It would not exist without her.
      Imagine being the type of person whose first impulse hearing “I like to give money to black business” is to find a way to go “ACKSUALLY” and discredit the work a black woman put into building said business because she did it with investors.
      Annoying.

    I think modern celebrities and influencers are aware that their fame is actually limited. Most of them will get a few years, a decade at the absolute outside and they need to get as much money as they can in that time. There's become this path to diversify their income and they're all repeating it. It's always simple easily marketable things like beauty, perfume, clothing, coffee and other food. They can get in and out quickly and don't actually have to invent anything complex to sell.

    I wonder if people forgot we didn’t buy all this stuff all the time until we sat home for a year or two with nothing to do or spend money on but lip kits and leggings? It amazes me when Gen Z-Alpha complain about how expensive things are while ordering take away from Door Dash. I’m Gen X and lived through a few recessions. The lesson is don’t buy or spend on dumb shit. IE; makeup, nails, lashes, eating out, vacations, subscription media until you have saved enough or are employed at a level where you can afford your lifestyle. It’s boring and NO fun but “if you live like no one else does now, you’ll live like no one else can later”. PS I’ve been underwater 2x from credit card debt and had to sit home while my girlfriends went to islands, dinners, concerts and shopping trips. After the second time it happened I learned to save for what I want and live below my means. I’m not rich but I’m not broke. And NO Gen X did not have lots of great paying jobs right out of school. My first job post college in 1990 paid $13,000 before taxes came out.

    I'm so sick of celebrities (many of them) and I'm happy their era is coming to an end. The only makeup brands I buy are Catrice Cosmetics, Essence Cosmetics and Wet n Wild. When it comes to clothes, I don't see the need to buy anything designer. I buy non designer clothes, non designer shoes etc. As long as it fits the streetwear look (the type of clothing I'm into) and it's affordable, I'm buying it.

    The target audience of most of these companies grew up. We got our favorite products or find something better and more efficient. I love Fenty but I don’t need 12 shades of glosses in my personal kit. We also understand that these celebrities are just people who got popular for doing something or a particular talent ( and the support of the machine). We don’t know them and they don’t know us. We focus more on the products while being more aware of the marketing tactics.

    Since years I regularly repurchase the Fenty beauty stunna lip paint bc so far I haven’t found a more perfect red lipstick.
    However, any other product I got from celebrity brands I never repurchased. I always liked the quality etc but they simply always were the same as anything from any other brand in the market. Adding that whatever was already on the market tended to be easier accessible and/or cheaper there was never a point in repurchasing anything from a celebrity brand.

    I love Haus Labs foundation. Huge Gaga fan . Tried her eyeliners and they were awful. Rem beauty is meh I bought their whole line when it first came out thinking it would sell out but it didn’t. I haven’t repurchased. Rare Beauty is overrated- had a bunch of their stuff. Highlighter broke instantly. Setting spray made me look oily (tried it 2x). The only ‘celebrity’ beauty line I swear by is makeup by Mario and it makes sense because he’s a makeup artist (more credibility). Everything I’ve gotten from that brand has been a staple. The Ariana grande perfumes were nice when I was younger but as a grown woman now I reach for other stuff.

    More than filling some gaps in the market, they use it to create more necessities and it's quite creepy if you think about it deeply. Most of them don't really use the products they sell.
    Ngl, I just personally don't use celebrity stuff unless it works for me. Bc for exampñe, I use Idole but not because of Zendaya but because I liked the smell (yet imma change it to something else like oils bc perfumes alter your hormones). And I use that brand because most of them don't irritate my eyes and if I get to have an allergic response, at least I can do a research and make a demand or something.

    I consistently purchase Britney Spears and Ariana Grandes perfumes, they tend to be pretty affordable and smell amazing, I get tons of compliments on them, but if they weren't such good quality, I definitely would just stick to Walmart brand perfumes. Celebrity brands just aren't appealing anymore especially if you can find much better quality using drugstore brands, and in this economy, spending an extra buck just because a popular celebrity released a brand just isnt it, I think one of the biggest reasons celebrities aren't seeing any success in the US anymore is inflation and the economy. The flex culture most of these celebrities rose to fame in is not longer appealing, it just seems like a slap in the face to the average consumer, nobody has the extra money to spend on their 'luxury' brands. Saving money is where its at and I think thats why influencers, especially down to earth "im just like you" influencers, are seeing such success. People want to follow people who are able to relate to their struggles, people who they feel like understand them and they can trust.

I really had to think bout it, I would buy products here and there if the internet bullies me enough to give in to the hype. Like the Haus Labs Foundation. I tried the new Fenty concealer, but the loyalty isn’t there. I don’t care if it’s Ariana’s brand, if the product is good I gonna keep picking it up. For me it’s the rare beauty undereye brightener. Back in the day you couldn’t separate me from my match stix. They were a Holy Grail products. Lasted half a life time and did their thing. The only reason I stopped picking it up was cheaper alternatives doing the exact same thing.

The products are so unique and fun, like the eye paints and she just released foundations that have different shades for every undertone (I have light olive skin and undertones are always too yellow or pink and i was so excited when i saw this released). This is a very youthful perspective. There are many other celebrities not related to the Kardashians that came WAY before these talentless ladies who sold their brands for HUGE sums of money. When Kylie came on the scene, her family already had a huge following, but Kylie didn't fill a hole in the industry. At that time, we already had so many lipsticks and palettes. She pedaled the same colors and products and packaged it to appeal to her young audience. But, let's not make Kylie an innovator. All of the Kardashians are opportunists who are fantastic at marketing. Fenty was more revolutionary & its staying power and quality deserve more attention than Kylie.

    The only celebrity product I use consistently and is Rihanna’s lip gloss. Not even the whole line just the lip gloss. It’s my favorite formula for a lip gloss. Idc about anything else anymore. I’ve used other things from celebrities but they are never that good. I remember buying a bunch of Tracee Ellis Ross’s hair line and it made my hair so greasy. I liked the conditioner but I had to use so much of it to get good results and that was how ir was intended to be used. Most of your best products will not be from a celebrity.
    I also don’t think most people that knew enough about Kylie Jenner enough to buy her lip products thought her lips were natural. I’m sure those people had fake lips too. I think they just didn’t care.

    You start out trying to give a brief “history” of celebrity brands, but I think it was pretty poorly researched. Marilyn Monroe and Chanel was just an endorsement, and that wasn’t anything new. The first celebrity perfume was Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds, and it’s still sold today. She walked so those other ladies could run.
    And when it comes to clothing, did you really start with Kayne? Really? Oh my god no, but if you want to go to celebrities in modern media, Jaclyn Smith. Or even the Olsen twins with the Row were influencing fashion WAY before him. Please look outside your bubble more.
