Your frustration is completely understandable and as a long time GM truck guy it saddens me to see how far they have fallen. I was recently in the market for a full size SUV for retirement and looked at the Tahoe and Yukon lines. After reading countless engine and transmission stories on the newer models I could not purchase one. I ended up with a used 2019 Toyota Sequoia with an excellent reliability history. I stayed away from the newer Toyota turbo models as we have all heard of similar problems Toyota is having with the new drivetrains. No turbo or CVT for me - I'll stick with the proven products. Hope your issues with the truck are behind you - it is an awesome looking truck!
Kyle, I own a 2021 Ford F250 Super Duty Diesel. Some would say I'm crazy for changing the oil at 5000 miles at 13qts a pop, BUT,...recommended 10,000 miles !! , I'm stick with what I'm doing. Glad Tim came thru for you. I went to the Dealership ONCE, for service, and as you, never again! Young KID, had no respect for a $86,000 Vehicle! (Nuff said)
I have a LM2 and had an oil leak. Took it to the dealership and they found a plug in the motor that had to be resealed. They resealed it and had me return after 500 miles to recheck the seal and it was good. The dealership is closer to my home than the dealership that I bought the truck from so I use them for all of the work that needs to be done. I can’t say enough good things about them!
I feel your pain when it comes to dealerships. The sales team treats you like gold and as soon as you are out the door, it all goes to shit. I have a 2023 Silverado and am having an issue with a right front directional intermittently not working. I will get the message on the dash that the directional is out and if you turn off the vehicle and turn it back on, it will work. I've had it to the dealer 4 times now and still not fixed. I keep asking if there is a service bulletin on this and they say no, of course. But they have had other instances where customers have the same issue. I have read some forums on FB and no one seems to have an answer. They changed the stick on the steering column but that didn't fix it either. Sorry for the rant, hopefully somebody will read this and maybe I can get this resolved. Keep up the great videos Kyle!!
They make these vehicles with so many 'creature comforts' and computers, some things are bound to fail. Why can't the auto industry just manufacture a basic 'work truck' for 1/3 the cost!...wind up windows, mechanical heater controls, floor headlight dimmer switch, manual transmission, etc, etc. Oh, probably because the majority of the younger generation wouldn't know how to operate them😂
I had terrible experience at my local Chrysler dealer. I had a leased Ram Truck and went to my local Chrysler dealer to buy the lease out. Long story short.... They ruined my credit because they wouldnt do a simple task and send the milage to the lease company. They just kept lying and said they did. They just kept lying about everything for 3 months and then my credit showed I was 3 months late on my payment from the lease company when actually I owned the vehicle. I hate that dealer so much. There is more to the story but this enough of my rant.
I was a long time mechanic at a GM dealer and was the only guy that would ever use fender covers. I had layers of soft cotton blankets that I would attach with magnets. The guy that did the repair was paid flat rate like most and was incentivized to hurry, skip as many steps as possible and usually there was a layer of broken brackets and shields that did not get replaced laying on the floor of his stall when he pulled the truck out. Lots of those vehicles would "come back" with issues like the loose duct. I refused to work flat rate. I didn't make as much money, but felt good at the end of the day and enjoyed my job.
Man I totally feel the frustration there. I am going through a similar situation with a tractor dealer I bought a tractor, trailer, and implements from a few months ago. They are also so bad that I'm just fixing everything myself and eating it. Worst part is they sponsor a TH-camr I really like and have watched for years. Service across the board is horrible. Glad your truck at least seems to be stabilizing after consuming oil. Thanks for the video!
I started watching your channel shortly after I got my Langmuir crossfire pro. Realized you had a lot of other content so came back for some of the excavator content. Turns out you’re an electrician. I did electrical work professionally from 2003 to 2008, and still do it for myself and friends on the side. Married with two kids, ages 7 and 3. Saw your truck in past videos but didn’t realize you had the duramax. I bought a new brand new 2021 Silverado LTZ with the 3.0 in June of ‘21. I make TH-cam videos on various topics but largely about vehicle repair/customization/machining/fabrication. Alternate universes collide on TH-cam. Cue the X-files theme!
I was told by my Chevy service Manager at my local dealer, that I was not to go by the computer “oil life” because once it was under 40 percent of the oil life reading that the oil filter filtration is greatly diminished. He recommended 3000 miles with hard towing and 5000 miles for everyday driving.
They want to sell you a new truck every 3 years that is why they push the oil changes to 9000 miles or more it came from a add company back in around the year 2000
I buy and service all my Chevy/Cadillacs from AutoNation West in Amarillo TX. I have an excellent service manager/service department and I do cherish it! I take them my award winning homemade chocolate chip cookies on a regular basis and I get the red carpet treatment! My ‘24 ZR2 Silverado with 3.0L LZ0 DuraMax has 14K on it. It is using 1 quart of oil per 5K and getting better as it breaks in. I change it every 5K and they use the AC Delco 0-20WD oil. This amount of oil consumption doesn’t concern me one bit and you should expect a little oil usage. I think it is a great truck with unbelievable MPG/range for a full size off road truck!
I just traded my 2020 Silverado with the 3.0L Duramax the end of November. 98,486 miles on the clock and the dreaded P0016 code popped up. Camshaft and Crankshaft sync implausible, stretched timing chains. Just got in under warranty, service told me it would have been a $13,000 repair had it not set the code until after the warranty ran out. Just a head's up before your warranty runs out. I only ran the Amsoil as well, never had the oil consumption issue though.
I had the same truck for awhile and got my oil from AMSOIL using Alex's link from Legit Street Cars and was getting out for under 100.00 but that was couple years ago. I had enough of bad dealer experiences with Chevy/GMC and left the brand. My current FORD dealer picks up and returns my trucks any time I opt for service, do not always have time to do it myself anymore. I am just 20 miles from the dealership but do love that part. No issues with the service. But one of my trucks has spent way to much time at the dealer for recalls though! They just cannot afford to build them the way they used too!
Kyle, I feel your pain when dealing with a dealership, but I also compelled to remind you that a large part of the problem in dealing with those places is their lack of accountability. Your choices to not contact them allows them to skate by and get away with the poor service, lack of communication, failure to order the correct parts, neglect in verifying the repairs, and contributes greatly to the horrible customer experience. Remember that a dealership can be held compliant to the manufacturers for all of this. No matter which brand, there is always an avenue you can take with the makers and have it done correctly. I twisted wrenches in a dealership for Ford for 12 years in my younger days as a certified master mechanic and electronics and driveability specialist. I have seen multiple times where vehicles sold from other dealerships came in and had warranty repairs done in our bays due to bad service at those places. I'm sure there were occasions where the reverse was true as well. There are consumer advocates at every manufacturer that can hold dealerships to the fire, up to and including a loss of their floor plan for inadequate service levels, meaning they lose their new car inventory, and their ability and standing to bid for new vehicles. I have seen customers receive a completely new vehicle due to their dealer being unable to correct a malfunction, solve a problem, etc. There needs to be more accountability in the world, not less!
Thanks for sharing and i agree. If they are going to charge what they are for vehicles then the service should match. Like Tim’s dealership. I wish he were closer.
Yes, GM got this one right. The log all engine parameters, including fuel burn, which is how they derive the oil life. Now if they could only build a vehicle around that algorithm....
@@clilesnyBut did you run it to 8,900 miles? A quart in 8900 doesn't really seem like a problem to me. If changed at 5000 he might not need to add anything.
@@kevin9c1 I changed the oil based on the computer specification, typically closer to 10K, sometimes sooner. It didn't matter if I changed earlier or closer to 10K, I never noticed any appreciable delta on the oil dipstick. I never had to top off between oil changes. At first I though the oil life monitor was a simple linear equation, but after some research I found that GM actually uses the available engine data to calculate oil life. Of course you can always change earlier, nothing wrong with doing that at all.
I know how you feel. Iv'e been through a bullshit thing with, supposedly reputable dealer. Thanks for the video
Unfortunately, that seems to be an increasing problem with any dealerships regardless of brand, If you find a good service department you've struck gold. Loved the intro with the toad, what's his name?
Oh, and my original reason for commenting, I try to change the oil every 5000-6000 miles. My understanding is the percentage on the dash is algorithmic, it’s not based on actually measuring anything. Unless you really love the Amsoil, I order oil change kits from Dmaxx store. The AC Delco oil and filter for $79 shipped!
I love my LM2 just hit 93K, she's going to get some weight loss after 100K. Oil consumption is common issue I've had. Some fill ups it is a quart low, and another 1/2 quart, then a couple times its 3 quarts. Knock on wood, it's been 30K miles since I had the 3 quart issue. However, I used prolube in the truck, and I don't blame them. But learned quick NOT to use it. Because of the super tight tolerances.
Not a mechanic, not an expert but, I have 2 diesel trucks. I questioned the mileage interval between oil changes. 10K or what ever the oil monitor tells you. I did some research, and found that diesels, more so than gas engines have a dilution factor when they first start up. There is a bit of diesel that actual does not burn and dilutes your oil. Impacting your oil viscosity. Cold engine starts, not allowing the engine to warm up long enough, not using a block heater, and not having the high idle. This causes a plethora of issues down the road. With that said, I will never go more then 5K between oil changes. I also tow a 5th wheel camper and actually try to change the oil at 3K with the one truck. Feel your pain with car dealerships. They want you coming in for repairs/service because that is where the can really empty your bank account.
I don't understand why oil consumption in a new engine unless you are trying to go to long on oil changes. I own a 2014 Ram 6.7 cummins 380,000 km on it now. zero oil consumption. I run full synthetic 5w40. 7500- 10,000 km oil changes. From new. Mostly 112 km ph 50/50 highway gravel.
Wow, I though my RAM dealer's service department was incompetent, well, they are but your chevy dealer wins. You should say the name of the dealership and send this video to Mary Barra.
In my 2014 silverado 5.3, my oil change meter was right at about 7400 miles. It was always the same though. I drive about 25k/yr, key cycles are all over the place definitely not routine number. Always went by the computer, Pushing 180k the engine purrs in that truck still but the trans is basically wet paper lol. My 2024 6.6 duramax I also go by the computer, seems to also be about the same each time but have not confirmed.
Wow, that's pretty crazy. The dealer in question is a huge dealer, people come from states away to buy from them. I've even seen their sticker on Louisville city trucks, which is messed up. You'd think a Kentucky city government would buy from a Kentucky dealer.
Not defending Uebelhors at all but I rarely hear anyone say they had work done at a dealer and they were satisfied. Where does one go to have anything done?
I have 2023 silverado LZ0 I live in canada. 160,000 km on it and use about 2 - 3 quarts at around 9000 - 11000 km oil changes. New turbo around 142,000 still having issues with new turbo. coolant control valve failure, glow plug replaced, a sensor related to def. 4 oil leak repairs, 3 just for crankshaft oil seal. some exhaust hanger bracket broken bolt on the engine causing rattle and low rumble exhaust noise. Onstar module failure. Probably about 3 months total I lost truck for all these repairs.
Dude don't feel alone getting piped by a dealership's service shop and you're 100% on with cherish a good service shop when you find one. When I took my Titan 5.0 Cummins to my local dealership in SC for warranty work, I knew I was going to spend my weekend unf'ing their work so I could get it right. My diesel also consumed oil but not enough that it was necessary to add between oil changes...normal? Also, how is your MPG with the Ridge Grappler's. Mine are like road Velcro...mpg drops way off!
Kyle, did you keep track of how many miles you towed with the truck after the cover replacement? just curious if you had calculated that into the post repair oil consumption.
I’m almost certain that they,” the dealer,” has to diagnose the entirety of the car’s computer so as to make sure that the computer is functioning properly…..
Sadly, your experience is way too common and super frustrating with the vast MAJORITY of dealerships. This type of thing scares me with my new-ish super-duty which which has an extended warranty. I'm good so far. At least you got the major part of the oil consumption behind you.
I never go buy the oil light because you can't you'd be better off just to change it every 3 to 4000 miles because you're probably driving severe duty anyway
0.5 Quart to 6500miles / 0.5L to 10,000km.. I would class as a maximum. I have an old 1994 run about corolla with 450+K km on it, and that's how much it uses.
MACHINE! You breezed right over the tire rotation. As a retired Master Mechanic (over 30 years) I disagree with the cross rotation. It is not the tread pattern that is the concern in the crisscross, it's the sidewall. The steel bands wrapped radially around you tire bend as you turn in. When you cross rotate the tires you are bending those radial bands in a different direction. Similar to bending a piece of metal back and forth, eventually that piece of metal will break/separate. I have seen on multiple tires that were cross rotated where the bands have broken through the side wall and wire is sticking out. Of course that created a air leak and flattened the tire. I believe with steel radials this crisscross rotation is a no-no.
What GM V8 or 6cyl Truck motor DOESN'T CONSUME at least 1 quart every 5k miles?? I'm pretty sure every GM engine that takes 6+ quarts to fill is expected to burn 1 per 5k miles... But honestly it seems like trucks from EVERY MANUFACTURE are having soo many wild potential problems.. even Toyota!
Dealerships suck. The GM oil life monitor uses a super complicated algorithm that basically calculates the oil life based off of your driving habits, idling time, etc
Man I'm sorry but dealerships that behave in this matter need to be called out. We need dealerships to be better than this, this is exactly why all dealerships get such a bad rap.
i dont know what to say......dealerships are the biggest rip offs and dumbest mechanics......and im talking 50 years of experience......thats too bad......i will say when i go in to do a free recall there are so many elderly there.....im 65 but im talking older than me......the wicked old generation think the dealerships are the answer.......more power to the dealerships.......my aunt who's 88 always ran to the dealer until she told me what was going on with her car and i told her to find a garage to fix things.....come to find out she was getting ripped off from the local repair shop too selling her things she didnt need......i guess im saying nothing new......if you can fix things yourself go for it.....i use youtube to fix my problems on my truck......and sometimes i fix problems myself plus i did find a semi-honest repair shop to do what i cant like ball joints.....it sucks and im sorry for your problem......google has good answers sometimes
Reminds me of a situation i expérienced last summer at a local mecanic shop. I brought in My Savana van for a differential cover leakage and ask for a Check up of the A/C,they told me that I would need a new compressor and the cost is expected to 1500$ at least … I found out after a 40 minutes search for a mini relay was corroded and faulty. 26$ later everything was working just fine. Being a HVAC dude i went along for a refrigerant swap and top it off to maximise efficacy. Now this local shop is scratch from my list since the didn’t even get to the fuse box to see.
Jumpin Geehosifat what happened to the automotive industry? They can't build shit anymore, always problems. I drove VW diesels as daily drivers for 26 years, 3 cars, each nearly 300k miles with hardly ever any problems. NO computers. How much worse can it get? I think it's deliberate so people will give up on engines and buy EV's.
America is doomed, there is no pride or technical expertise anymore. Most mechanics learn by making mistakes on new vehicles rather than thorough mentorship.

Thanks for the info
Holy crap. Ghost ride that sucker right off a cliff. Surprised Chevy doesnt get you in a new truck after all those issues.
I get about 21 average. Up to 24 on the highway. Definitely not 28-30 like some people are getting.
On my fox body I say 'if it is leaking oil, I know it has some'
Kyle, did you keep track of how many miles you towed with the truck after the cover replacement? just curious if you had calculated that into the post repair oil consumption.
I really didn’t tow much after the repair. The most towing i did with that truck was when we moved and getting the Chinese excavator from Oklahoma.
The dealer told me the oil life percentage is based on ignition key cycles. Don’t know if that’s actually the case, but that’s what I was told.
Mmh thats interesting. That could definitely be off then.
Did you buy your truck at that dealership you didn’t name in jasper Indiana?
I did not. I bought it up in northwest Indiana where i used to live.
Sounds like some sort of solenoid and or actuator issue….
Going to sell that machine anyway. Good not to mention the name….😮
How do you find your 3 liter diesel
Im not sure exactly what your asking. I searched for it on the internet and found it at a near by dealer.
Pop the front hood. Should be right there.
What happened to the toad?
It escaped
Kyle - the majority of your oil life calculation is based on fuel burn.
Holy shit call that damn dealer out that dealer should be punished for not taking care of their customers put their asses out of business
Dealers are the worst! I have a RAM1500 2020 and both dealers in my area are terrible for service.
Machine
Dealerships suck. The GM oil life monitor uses a super complicated algorithm that basically calculates the oil life based off of your driving habits, idling time, etc
Man I'm sorry but dealerships that behave in this matter need to be called out. We need dealerships to be better than this, this is exactly why all dealerships get such a bad rap.
You should tell people how fucked up this dealer is.
Bummer that sux
i dont know what to say......dealerships are the biggest rip offs and dumbest mechanics......and im talking 50 years of experience......thats too bad......i will say when i go in to do a free recall there are so many elderly there.....im 65 but im talking older than me......the wicked old generation think the dealerships are the answer.......more power to the dealerships.......my aunt who's 88 always ran to the dealer until she told me what was going on with her car and i told her to find a garage to fix things.....come to find out she was getting ripped off from the local repair shop too selling her things she didnt need......i guess im saying nothing new......if you can fix things yourself go for it.....i use youtube to fix my problems on my truck......and sometimes i fix problems myself plus i did find a semi-honest repair shop to do what i cant like ball joints.....it sucks and im sorry for your problem......google has good answers sometimes
That motor does not call for 0 -20 oil
It does call for 0w-20. Has to be dexos D or rated for diesel engines too.
Dealers service centers are no better than jiffy lube these days by and large. Your liaUebel to get Horible service at most of them.
wow 5 mins in
?
Reminds me of a situation i expérienced last summer at a local mecanic shop.
I brought in My Savana van for a differential cover leakage and ask for a Check up of the A/C,they told me that I would need a new compressor and the cost is expected to 1500$ at least …
I found out after a 40 minutes search for a mini relay was corroded and faulty.
You know that CHEVROLET stands for Constantly Having Every Vehicle Recalled Over Lousy Engineering Techniques, right?
Hah no i do
😆
Stop using 20 weight oil in you truck use a 10w30 diesel oil
You do know these trucks require 0W 20 oil because of the tight bearing tolerances
@ that’s not true they spec 20 because they are desperate for fuel economy numbers from the epa .
wow, terrible, Kyle, for next truck change, maybe buy FORD, TOYOTA, NISSAN.....?????
No, it didn't work. It's a Chevy.
America is doomed, there is no pride or technical expertise anymore. Most mechanics learn by making mistakes on new vehicles rather than thorough mentorship.
That’s three videos now without saying machine. About as disappointed in you as you are with that Chevy dealership.
Haha! Im killing the brand. There will be one in the next one for sure. Its already filmed. Just have to edit it.
Why would you take your truck to a weird name like "UEBELHOR" anyway? This ol country boy don't know how to pronounce that.
Hah! I dont either.
You do truck stuff and engraving??? I thought this was the keystone-girl channel? Wierd. Hahahah. Dealerships are very confusing/ and dishonest with the word. UNDER WARRANTY is not what you think.
GM is garbage and some how still the best….
My 5.3 drinks oil like a drunk at a dive bar
I sent u an email a few months ago to put you in a low mile F350, never got a reply. It's still available if you decide to dump that heavy Chevy for a real work truck.
I dont remember getting that email.
Resent email.
bs dealer! Good you can work on your own vehicles. ...ribbit
