My Apple G3/DT from 1997 even became an ‘adult’. I used it for 18 years. The computer was upgraded with a Sonnet G4/800 processor card, with 768 MB of RAM (maximum expansion), with an ATI Radeon Mac Edition, with a USB/Firewire combo card and, thanks to Xpostfacto, it ran 10.4 Tiger as the operating system. It was my main computer until 2009 and was still in use as a second machine until 2015. Now that I think about it, another computer has even ‘grown up’ in my house this year: I bought a second-hand iMacCore 2 Duo (2.33 20’ / imac5,1 from 2006) in 2009, upgraded it to 4GB RAM and later equipped it with an SSD. Officially, it only receives Windows 7 drivers from Bootcamp Assistant, but I updated it to Windows 10 (32bit) years ago. It has already had to be completely disassembled once to clean it, because it became too hot. It also remains switched off in the meantime, but sits on the shelf just like the G3.
I still have 2 of the 2014 Mini's that I use for experimentation and as part of a cybersecurity lab running scans and other monitoring applications. They're pretty slow, but for security work they are fast enough and handle external storage very well, when I need to transfer large scan logs. The best feature for me is the remote management the I can run from a main console and look at both computers at the same time. I'm retired now and have dismantled my lab, so I'm looking to donate these to the local college.

You're absolutely right with your choice for that purpose. I run an even older Mini as a home music server. It dual boots OSX occasionally, and Linux Mint (DE) most of the time, has alternative browsers in OSX which are still maintained, and is fully up to date in Mint. Best of all, it also plays CD's and DVD's when needed. Many Apple devices are seemingly indestructible, and I've even seen a G3 iMac DV being used in a workshop, recently, running Linux Debian 6 very comfortably.
I picked up a 2012 Mac Mini with 16gb RAM, quad core possessor, and SSD(with a port to add a second SSD) for $100. It works great. No problem running several web browser tabs, streaming Netflix, etc. I truly don't think a better computer value exists for basic computing than an older Mac Mini.
This approach basically works for everything nowadays. Clothes I get for max 10 bucks at the thrift shop. A top of the line Bravia or Viera from around 2010 can be had for like 25 bucks, and is in many ways better than most new TV's. Kitchen ware, tools, plants, cars, you name it, all being a fraction of the new price.

The fact that Apple has controlled every part that has gone to all of their machines, for decades, means there is less variability that needs to be considered regarding drivers etc. Because of that, you have a built-in "long-term support - LTS" - of the _hardware_ . 3:40 Thats just such an invalid point. Its neither supported by (your) reason nor by evidence. Supported Windows Versions work on 9 year old hardware just fine. I daily drive a Thinkpad x240 from 2013 with windows 10 / ubuntu no problem
This is not "such" an invalid point as you claim. This is known as the "Walled Garden" technique where controlling hardware and software combinations allows for better optimizations. There is a reason why most mainstream apps prefer iPhones, because there is only so many Finite combinations of devices to worry about. WIndows will certainly run on older devices as long as youre careful with the programs you load onto it to prevent it from bogging down (This is coming from a Lifetime WIndows user) Thank you for watching :)
@@RajeyWajey yes, the walled garden is a known technique for better optimisation, the console market is a great example of that. What a walled garden is not especially good at is longevity. The walled garden breaks down more and more with every single variation of a product it needs to support. Supporting 10 year old devices while also supporting every other device that has come out since is the nightmare of any walled garden. This is exactly where non specific optimisation has its strength.
Okay elephant in the room here. No doubt Apple products are optimized but Apple does have an issue. I bought the Mac Mini M1 a couple years ago and it was everything Apple said it was however the operating system to me seemed a little outdated. what do I mean by this. In windows I can open up multiple windows on one screen that automatically fit next to each other however, on Mac OS this was a very cumbersome thing to do you have to manually resize your windows. This was a big deal to me because I do audio recording and it frequently knocked me out of my workflow because things just did not work as smoothly like on Windows. Another problem Apple has is that for that price they're offerings are very slim 8 gigs of RAM 256 GB hard drives even 16 gigs and 512 it's a little outdated for 2023 the Baseline model should come with at least 16 gigs and a 1 TB SSD needless to say I went back to Windows I bought a used i-7 9700 maxed out the memory to 32 gigs put a 2 TB Drive SSD for my samples and a 512 GB SSD( all for under 450 by the way) for my boot Drive for audio I can hardly tell the performance difference between the M1 and this 9th gen Intel processor. However for video the mag does mop the floor with the i7 so that's why I'm keeping it for video editing only. I think both systems are great however if you want a better upgrade path without being robbed blind Windows is the way to go
All great points you raise here! I gotta agree with em all. That’s kind of the reason why I’m still on windows. But for simple tasks for my parents this was great buy

Mac Mini M4 for £499?
Gotta be the best bag for buck Mac rn.
Very family friendly video.
Great video
Thank you very much
Imagine having a mic on your face and the audio still coming from the built in mic on the camera lol
Uh. Didn’t see the disclaimer?
I’ve got a 2012 Mac mini with the 2.5GHz dual core intel i5. OS updates ended with Catalina but it still works for web browsing, MS office….and most important of all, streaming GeForce now. She’s getting a bit slow even with the SSD. I just we ordered a used 2018 Mac mini with the 6 core i5 for $200 USD. We’ll see how that one does. Should be way faster. Worst case it gets returned.
Update
Yup
Yup
At the rate that Apple updates the Mac Mini, buying a 2014 is similar to purchasing an iPhone 13.
im more interested in the plant pot cool vid tho
This is exactly where non specific optimisation has its strength.
watching this on m2 mini
Lucky man! Thank you for watching
Great video
Thank you so much for watching :)
Audio very distorted. sounds over driven.
A tiny piece of freeware fixes this annoyance.
8gb of ram is too low for Intel
Not at all. Especially not for just daily tasks as explained. Simple web browsing and etc
I got the M2 Mac Mini with the SSD dock under it for $500 CAD (360 USD). I installed all the cracked software programs, like PS, Davince, Office 2021... In Canada, I do not think I can get any 500CAD new PC this good. macOS is so smooth, I felt the m2 Mac mini is just more responsive than my RTX gaming PC in a magical way. I also got that 32GB ram RTX 3080 gaming PC for only 800 CAD. I can only buy used things now. They are too attractive for a cheap person like me.
Woman Repellent? I run and have built quite a few gaming rigs in my day and my mom is a 80 yo graphic designer and artist who has been running high end machines for almost 30 years and my daughter works for a tech firm building system configs. Thanks for the product video though. I just wanted to know if they were still viable and worth dropping a few quid just to tear it apart and tweak into a portable machine for traveling - you answered my questions.
Loool was just trying to be cheeky. Glad I could help!
@RajeyWajey You are indeed cheeky - it put the hackles up on this nearing 50 old broad. Show it to your mom. My mom didn't even learn how to turn a computer on until 25 years ago. My grandma was 80 when she learned and then became a gamer. Teach your momma and encourage her. You are a good son juat doing something lovely for your parents.
Makes a great Plex Media Server!
I would rather a 2012 with an i7…got mine for $50.00
Ouuu thats a great deal! But yes same principle! Old is gold
ok
Fools buy new, if they don’t need to.
Salam brother ducky 🐤
Good luck getting hardware support after 6 years
You mean another 6 years? Because this Mac had support 7 years after launch. Plus like many have mentioned there’s other use cases like Linux Mint and OpenCore
Your audio is really bad, i.e. way too low. And the music makes the voice unhearable.
I don’t recall having music play over my voice. But thank you for letting me know will try to fix it in the next video. Thanks for watching
The audio is slightly rough but not a big deal. The content is great and everyone improves over time.
@@precisionxt Thank you
So much crap of shit
That Mac Mini is already obsolete, do you really love your parents? I would not buy that in 2023.
racially motivated
Thank you for watching!
