"Homicide is illegal, death is a penalty. What justifies the Homicide when he dies in his own iniquity? Is the master of the mantis rapture comin atcha..." One of THEE greatest hip hop verses I've ever heard period! Every line hit like a train! Word to MASTA KILLA!
I used to think Masta Killa was some kind of lyrical mastermind when I first heard this (not that he's not). It was a completely unheard of cadence and rhyme scheme at the time. Also, the vivid imagery of the "nervous system" segment is just so damn impressive. Magnificent.
Yeah the first time I heard that as a kid, I was like "who is this guy and why is he only on one song?" Still one of his best verses, although "Glaciers of Ice", "1112" and "Assassination Day" (and many more) are lethal as well.
Mystery of chess boxing sold me instantly as a kid. The beat, the rhymes, and the visual elements of dudes hoodie’d up on a chess board ,with white masks and swords. I would say Masta Killa’s verse was the best on that song, but ODB’s (RIP)crazy unpredictable energy also sold it too.
Bro, everything you just stated is facts as it pertains to how I became a Wu fan. This song and accompanying music video was the game changer and it was never the same after for me.
Masta Killa never wrote a rhyme until this joint and THAT'S what he comes up with! When I introduce people to Wu this is the track I play them. Everybody goes hard on it. No bad verse.

It took me some years listening to MCing/rapping to stop Masta Killas “one breath” spitting…until then it was U-God and ODB that made me rock. What an energetic track!
Masta Killa definitely was the icing on the cake, on that track. His verse still bugs me out to this day… he worded every line so perfect. One of the best Hiphop verses of all time. 👐🏾 #StudentOfTheWu
I can't wait until they show masta killa and killah priest falling asleep and masta killa taking advantage while priest was sleeping and when he woke up masta had his verse ready for the mystery of cheeseboxing ready lol
They not going to show that story. There is one episode left. That takes away from the core story and they have to cut stuff. Ofc it would be dope to see that in the show they just wont bcuz time constraints. But we as fans know it happened.
Only started listening to Wu Tang last week and I can confidently say this song (and C.R.E.A.M.) are both absolutely perfect songs. Every MC on it did their thing which is mainly what makes it so addictive. But I must say, the highlight of the track was Masta Killa’s verse. His cadence, flow, bars, style and just about everything was mind-blowing to me. But of course, everyone else just about killed it too. And Method Man on the hook is just so catchy. Da Mystery of Chessboxing is incredible addictive. The beat, lyrics, style and even the music video just blew me away. Can’t wait to hear Wu-Tang Forever.
I remember "dailling" up "the box" a million times just to watch that video over & over again. Yeah, my mom nearly wu-tanged my head piece when she saw the phone bill at the end of the month but it was worth it.🙌
I said this in the comment of another video and imma say it again. Protect Ya Neck and Method Man made me a fan, but when these brothers dropped the video for Chessboxin I became Wu Tang Forever!!!
Almost 30 years later and The Clan is as strong as ever. I mean fr, they're the most influental rap group of all time. They're still talked about to this day, the W still holds weight and whoever went against the clan is gone today. The logo alone demands respect and whatever sports it is instantly cool. Wu tang to me represents the against all odds mentality. These guys were not supposed to be spokesmen, businessmen, authors , entrepenuers or teachers, yet they're all that an so much more ! The Hulu series, allthough exagerreted, puts things into perspective. The struggle was real and yet they're all here as a unit decades later, Dirty too. Dirt dog is an inspiration to me man, when faced with a difficult situation I just ask myself "what would Dirty do ?" real talk.
My favorite verse is Ghost's verse. Every time i listen to eat i just smile and i bump my head till my brain comes out of my nose 😂 and don't get me started with the lyrics
Masta Killa’s verse was so deep and textured it actually takes a lot of listens to fully contemplate it. I never understood why he wasn’t bigger. His verse is on a level of Nas
Hey the great thing bout wu tang every member have a song where they was in space so dope on a track but most the time its all them make them so different 4real
I've been rockin' with these dudes since day one. Still here 28 years later. I listened to Reunited and Hellz Wind Staff yesterday and it was like hearing it for the first time. Wu-Tang is Forever. Peace. 👐🌍🙌🏾
On January 21, 1994 we talk to Fab 5 Freddy and we went shooting Wu-Tang Clan new video is called "Da Mystery of Chessboxin'" from the first album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) on Yo! MTV Raps Classic
Master killer had one of the best verses on this song. I wish they would have explained his role a little bit more in the Wu saga series . He showed up on the last episode of season 2 like here I am. I'm like wtf u come from🤣
Here I go deep type flow Jacques causteo can never get this low, what’s crazy about that verse Jacques I grew up watching him deep diving into water and I said dam dirty good verse
Crazy thing is i didn't hear Protect Ya Neck first...i heard "Chess Boxing" and it was Masta Killas verse that made me go buy the album the next day...much love to #9
For me U God and Masta Killa verse are my favorite of all time because you knew that out of the nine of them those only had one full verse so they had to come with it and they did

And then tells the kid to close his eyes and listen to the humming bird . And asked him how he can not . Please I've been looking for that song for a long time please help me .

Wu Tang Clan is the greatest hip hop crew of all time. There's 9 members so they had to battle to get a spot on a song. Steel sharpens steel. It's like being a poor kid and having to fight your other 8 siblings for a slice of pizza. It only makes you better. This is the blueprint to make a hip hop dynasty.

I love Masta Killa & Killah Priest truthfully i believe Timbo King shouldve been the 10th member of Wu-Tang Clan while CappaDonna better off as a 9th member
When Masta Killa talks it's the definition of CALM
His cadence is smooth
Masta Killa definitely shined at the end
Fax pure 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Masta Killa humble af. Shout to the quiet assassin
U-gods verse is phenomenal
They all killed this record for real …
Came with hunger and grit
God is underrated
@@Saveyourbs
Man I always wanted to hear more from U-God.
U-God's verse set this whole track and the whole crews rhymes up. From the first verse to the last verse this track was a lyrical assassination
That verse should have been talked about about. One of the dopest intros
"Homicide is illegal, death is a penalty. What justifies the Homicide when he dies in his own iniquity? Is the master of the mantis rapture comin atcha..."

Yeah, that verse is mind boggling. There could probably be a class at a University based on deciphering it. 😂

It was like a sniper bullet you didn't see. Even from all the individual artists on D.M.o.C.B., Masta Killa's verse stood tallest.
Yeah the first time I heard that as a kid, I was like "who is this guy and why is he only on one song?" Still one of his best verses, although "Glaciers of Ice", "1112" and "Assassination Day" (and many more) are lethal as well.
he's like the de La element of the Wu which is ill. Unorthadox flow. Caters to the intellectual poetic. He speaks to me.

Masta's "No Said Date" is such an under-rated album. In my Wu top 10, it brought back those 36 chambers vibes that had been missing for so long.
No Said Date and The Pillage. 2 of my favorite Wu solo joints. And Wu-Syndicate’s first solo is the best Wu affiliate album there is!
It's good seeing these dudes out here talking about the genesis
GZA's "dream come true" was straight on the beat.
I'm glad _someone_ noticed! 👐
