No. Mudavadi was DP on merit. On this I give credit to Rala as much as I don't support him. He had a hard task to balance the half bread but didn't play favouritism politics. In fact, he even defended Mudavadi when Ruto almost tossed him out and went ahead to ditch Raila in 2013.

@@miltonm.muriungi203 I supported Raila but only because I preferred him over Ruto. But he has a habit of not consolidating/maintaining what he already has when he gets an opportunity to add more. So he's always adding while subtracting, which = 0. But he also takes strong stands on some issues, which hurts him e.g Mau Forest etc.
Statistically speaking though, the Luhya are more than the Kalenjin. Perhaps Raila assumed that the combined factors of Mudavadi and himself (due to the traditional alignment of Luhyas around Kakamega to their Luo shemejis) would consolidate the total Luhya + Luo vote behind him.
Notably, at that time Ruto had no national appeal beyond RV. Also at that time, no one could imagine the Kalenjin and Kikuyu votes ever being in the same basket -- so if you picked the Luhya, the Kalenjin could potentially be isolated. Especially since the Kamba had warmed up to Kibaki/Uhuru PNU, via Kalonzo.
Indeed, Ruto was treading on shaky ground as a lone wolf in the 2010 constitution NO camp. Could have been very bad had the yes camp remained united. If Raila (after he wisely stopped fighting Kibaki) had strongly opposed any attempt to prosecute Uhuru for PEV, maybe Uhuru wouldn't have joined forces with Ruto. But again, UhuRuto didn't seem reasonably feasible then. I also suspect the deep state then probably didn't want Raila and that altered all the equations.
All to say, I think these things aren't that straightforward. But I think Ruto has been served well by a) Wanting it the most in any fight b) His ability to consolidate Kales since maybe 2002.
