      To be fair the o sound written like that, to them, seemed very similar to the n. The way she wrote ㅗ made it look similar to ᄂ which confused them.

      Correction , you may have meant " All Western" thing. Except maybe Russian because I think the Russian alphabet since they're proximity to Korea might be closer however most western Nations not just the English would be perplexed. Turkish Turkey may be the only Western/Middle Eastern languages that can identify with Korean vowels. Please correct me if I sound stupid saying that.

      @@danilapolesciuk4316 agreed but unlike Latin both Korean and Russian have a word for no. Korean I think is more Turkish when it comes to sounding pronunciation of the alphabet but that's another subject. Just like Portuguese sounds more Russian spoken, and they are at entirely different ends of the European continent and had no contact with each other. And Portugal literally is the most Western European Nation, however their vowels and cosanents soud Russian or vice versa. If you ever hear Portuguese in it's pure tongue spoken sounds almost Russian. And nothing like their neighbors immediately the Spanish of Spain.

    Modern Korean is written with syllable blocks. Each block starts with 1 consonant (or sometimes a doubled consonant), then has 1, 2, or 3 vowels, and then finishes with 0, 1, or 2 consonants. The individual block is read left to right and top to bottom, and then the blocks collectively are read left to right. In that example the first block was “Ko” (코) and the second block was “nan” (난) resulting in 코난 (“Ko-nan” or “Conan”). The writing system is actually very easy, what’s difficult is that they have more base vowels than we do in English and frequent diphthongs and even triphthongs.

    Korean writing is done by grouping "letters" in to syllables where "letters" are read left to right, then top to bottom. 'O' is always below and 'A' always on the right.. so 코 = Ko (or Co), 난 = Nan.

    Dave had it - in Hangeul, the Korean writing system, the phonetic bookstaves are used to form syllabaries which are read top to bottom, or top to right-side to bottom-left to bottom-right if 4 bookstaves are used. The first symbol there is "k'ō" the second is "nan". Daz is right about the 'L' looking symbol representing the English "n" sound. Daz is also correct, what is rendered by 코난 would be pronounced as "k'ō-nan" but we don't actually pronounce the 'a' in his name as 'ah', but as a reduced vowel like "i" "konin". That short 'i' sound doesn't exist in Korean, so the closest approximation would be "k'ō-nen" pronounced with an 'eh' sound written as 코넨

    • @thevannmann

      @brianlewis5692 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@thevannmann What you say is true, yet in the name Conan, the 'a' is not a schwa sound, it's a short i as in 'bin', i.e. /kʰoʊ.nɪn/ (American) or /kʰəʊ.nɪn/ (UK). I've never heard anyone pronounce his name /kʰəʊ.nən/

    Korean writes clockwise, and if there is no consonant to end a syllable, then it is just down. So 고 is Ko, 난 is Nan, phonetically spelling Conan.

    That poor poor girl! And I’m talking about “Mike” and not the very patient teacher who has to deal with the redhead creep.

    You should check out Conan’s commencement speech at Dartmouth University. He’s pretty hilarious in it.

    Well, I guess the next video should be Conan in Japan learning Japanese etiquette from this lady expert. That one is pretty great as well.

    The meanie Korean lady spelled Conan's name correctly. The first letter, is actually 2 letters. The "ㄱ" is a K-sound and it's underlined with "__" which makes an "uh" sound. Below that is the symbol "ㅗ" which makes an "O-sound". then you look up at the first "ㄴ" which makes an N-sound, to the right of that is the symbol "ㅏ" for an Ah-sound, then down to another "ㄴ" which is an N-sound. So, it's (K-uh)-O-N-Ah-N. 🙃

      No, ㅋ is a k sound, ㄱ is more a g sound like a 'voiced' k. An ㅗ vowel beneath an ㅡ vowel is not valid in Hanguel.
