  • The chicks are now 2 months old, and almost fully feathered. It's now obvious which are hens and which are cockerels, and due to one chick being killed by a rat, we now have 3 hens and 3 cockerels, two of which are beginning to crow. Both parent hens have left the chicks but are still interested in them when they hang out in the garden. In fact one hen is already trying to hatch some more chicks...!
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed watching these little hens grow up.

Why not let them free range? My Sabelpoot are free ranging from the second week with the mother hen. They are doing fine when the mother keeps an eye on them and keeps them warm now and then. I do have to help them go back to roost in the chicken coop, but after a week they now how to do it.

is the other color a porcelain?

It could well be! I have to be honest I'm not sure, but looking at some other pictures I think she probably is a porcelain. We just didn't expect it with her parents being the regular bantam colour.

Great stuff ,the look like they have lots of character ! are the bantam chicks for egg laying ? If so how many eggs a month for one chick? Cheers

They have lovely characters, and all of them completely unique, so they're a joy to have round the garden. They haven't been bred specifically to be an egg layer like some breeds but we still get at least an egg every other day on average, and often more. They also make determined broodies, and our two older hens are already trying to hatch another clutch...!

I should add, that's in the spring to summer months. Over the late Autumn to winter they won't lay at all I believe.
