If you are new to my channel and Fy Nyth (Welsh for "My Nest") in general, welcome! I'm Ariel. Along with my husband Clay, our dogs, and some poultry, we live in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming and are working on setting into our own new little homestead. I've been living this lifestyle since 2014 and my wonderful partner has joined me more recently. What will you find if you follow the channel and watch the videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. We split wood for heat, fill the water tank from a gravity fed spring, and attempt to grow as much of our own food as possible between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.

Yes! I started over seeding and filling patches in my lawn this spring. I absolutely love it. We are using white Dutch clover ☘️ (blooms short). I have several other native clovers mixed in with grasses. I love to let it get a bit longer and flower awhile before mowing. I don’t use fertilizers or poison on my lawn. I don’t care if the neighbors think I’m nuts 🤪 🍀 makes my feet and heart happy ! I’ll add micro clover to the mix now too. Thanks!

Ariel, I came across information not long ago, that lawn seed 'back in the day' had a percentage of clover in it. I want to say 30%, but I'm not sure. Then, in the 50s they took the clover out of the lawn seed and they started making weed killing products. I've let my front lawn clover spread naturally ... it's lovely, and so soft under foot.

I once rented a place where the yard was seeded with white violets, miniature strawberry, and little clover. It was so pretty. But my home of many years is on wetland and has anoxic soil, so I've let the wild world take over (I do not plant or fertilize and rarely mow) and my backyard is covered with Sundew (Drosera drosera), a very small carnivorous plant. It's kinda cute.

Tall grass hides snakes. I planted a playground grass seed 24 years ago. It had some white clover in it. I learned to mow the lawn before Memorial day and not to mow again until after July fourth. This allows the clover to flower, attract bees and then go to seed before I mow it. I direct the mower to throw grass over any bare spots. My lawn is lush. The bunnys love it. I do not fertilize the lawn but I do spread the ashes from the wood stove over the lawn in the winter. Good video. Good Luck, Rick

I lost my lawn to clover completely without seeding and felt pretty sad as my lawn was my pride and joy.

Clover is a wonderful plant and has many uses. Beautiful, edible, Healthy for the yard even though your neighbors hate it.
Thankfully our neighbors are horses and cows. They love it. :)

love this! I have clover and ate so many of my dandelions, that I don't have that many in my yard. Now I know why the lawn is so green!

I grew up in Oklahoma City. We always had a Dutch clover lawn. It looked great, could take the heat and dry weather. I like it a lot better than grass.
We are trying to get a lawn growing here. It's clay soil, shaded and wet. We planted some sort of grass seed that they use on the Oregon coast. It's starting to look pretty good.
In OKC right now, this is really good to know as I’ve been thinking about doing this to our lawn!

I have always had clover and dandelions in my yard. Rabbits love clover to eat as well as groundhogs which both of them frequent our yard. I like picking the flowers and eating them raw as well. Ours are both white and lavender in color. Great informational video!
I love clover and surprisingly enough do not mind creeping Charlie, except in my garden. Smells nice when you mow sorta like mint.

When I was young, farmers would rotate crops, and clover was something that was in their rotation. Always like the smell, and, evidently so did the bees. The farmer also had bee hives, so the clover was a win-win for him.
Great info for a substitute for grass or in combination. Careful in bare feet, bees love clover. Love you xero shoes.......I have some too!

We always plant clover or legumes as a green manure crop in the area of the vegetable garden we allow to rest for the winter. And we have no 'lawn' but have white clover instead.
Clover grow in abundance here. If id have to start over from dirt id definitely include it. (My daughter loves sucking out the "honey" from the purple clovers)
We just moved to a new place which has clover and grass and the lawn is gorgeous.
Love using White Dutch Clover & Red Clover… I use it all over instead of grass. Nothing to do status… I just don’t care for grass….and the bees and butterflies like it as well. Plus it grows well in our rocky terrain. Wish I’d known of micro clover. There is one section in which I really could have used that. Will be looking into that. Nope no herbicides for me either. I live in a mountain lake community and we really have to be mindful of what we put on the ground with all of the wells and lakes around. Thanks for the info.

My dad scattered clover seeds on our lawn in the fifties and sixties because we were on sand and grass was just not taking off very well. The variety was the medium range in height with lots of flowers. I liked the clover until I stepped on a bee while barefoot. I'd like to try the micro-clover on my lawn and hope to be able to find the seed before Autumn.

Funny you relocated from San Diego… we came here after living 4 decades in southern Nevada. Gardening here is fantastic but, obviously limited to late spring, summer & early fall.

@@debbiecrochiere2182 Well, Debbie… I think this is really, really a hoot…we three Vermont “transplants” all meeting up here, thanks to Ariel in Wyoming & her great channel.😉. And, I’m way down at the southeast end and right along the Connecticut River, too.
When we built our house we did the usual, sowed grass seed, then worked hard trying to keep it filled in when our hot dry summers came. For a couple of years we battled and lost not only the grass but time and money. After all that we just let nature take over, native grass and weeds filled in and during the hot dry summers the "lawn" is still green. We even have visitors ask how we keep our "lawn" looking so lush, they don't believe when I reply "nothing." Over the years clover has found it's way in and now over half of our "lawn" is clover, white clover my honeybees love it of course. The only expense we have for our "lawn" is for mowing.

Thank you for letting us know about clover, especially micro clover. I've been wanting to have a yard that is less work, mowing, and doesn't grow terribly tall. I will be planting my new tiny yard in clover and since I am also planting most of my 3 acres in trees I will be spreading clover over that too. You always have the best tips and I enjoy your vlogs very much.

I never use chemicals. I have what ever is growing too. I really like the idea of micro clover. I am goi GM to look into it. Cut down on mowing. Thanks for the information.

My grandmother put 25% clover in her lawns, her lawn was always gorgeous and we had fun scouring the yard for four-leaf clovers.
I love the idea of a micro clover lawn! Never liked a big yard of grass, seems like such a waste of space. Such good info- thanks 🙂

I have yellow sweet clover that grows wild around here. Two years ago it was all over the place had grew up to three feet tall. The past two years only grows where I water. You can see the nodules on the foots when pulled up. It has a large tap root. There is a mold that grows on it that makes it toxic to livestock. I will have to try some of that other clover. Thanks for the link.
Growing up in southern California we had Dichondra in the lawn. This didn't require any mowing but would not survive a frost.
@dfhepner It's not 'mold', these are rhizobia, knots of beneficial bacteria and they DO NOT harm livestock. The cause for what you observed must be something different.
Our cattle absolutely loved the yellow sweet clover. They did very well on it. No toxicity issues whatsoever.
@@Balligat the nodules were nitrogen fixing , but the leaves have a blue gray mold growing on them. That mold is toxic.
I allways wanted a camomile lawn..
Clovers is good can also be good hay crop, also will improve the soil if you want to use that land for gardening.

When I asked for clover seed to add to my 'lawn', the guy at the garden center acted like I was a little off. I guess he would rather have sold me on weed killer and a lot more grass seed and fertilizer. I bought the clover seed. It's still getting established but it's coming along.

While we do have grass in our yard there is a lot of other green things. Clover, dandelion, violets, plantain weed, wood sorrel, wild onion, and garlic mustard. For me it is very pretty.

I love clover and drive all the lawn people crazy when I plant clover seed on purpose every year. Bare spots are great for clover seed. Adds beneficial nitrogen.

Microclover, Trifolium repens var. Pipolina or Pirouette, was developed in the Netherlands and Denmark for use on golf courses.

We naturally have the little white clover and a bigger light purple clover. I would love red too! We always let stuff grow..violets, dandelion, chicory, etc. Plus it's so pretty.

Your home looks so lovely with that view behind it. One reason you don't get dead spots from the dogs peeing is probably because you feed them a natural raw diet, instead of commercial dog food, so their pee is much less toxic. I also love clover in a lawn (as well as daisies) but I once got a bee sting on my instep, not noticing it in the very short little flowers.
I am sure diet has a lot to do with it as well.
I am a big fan of a clover lawn. It doesn’t spread underground though. It reseeds itself with its flowers. You have to let the flowers go to seed, or you have to overseed now and then.

Hi Arial, I dislike cutting grass and as I am getting more mature 😉 even less I have planted creeping thyme in my lawn. I live in the Ottawa Valley, Ontario not too far from me, there is a cemetery that is basically wall to wall creeping thyme. It is beautiful with the purple flowers and it never needs to be cut. That is what I liked about the thyme not to mention the lovely smell when you walk on it, however I never thought of micro clover I wonder if I could combine the two? As for Burley I was starting to get worried not seeing him and there he pops out from under the house. It was like ok enough attention if front of the camera without me. ❤ your videos,. God bless. 🍁

*QUESTION* Could you use clover in a front garden bed that has boundaries or in a big pot? Or do they go to seed and go wild? I really do learn so much from you. :) Your place is looking awesome!
I believe that clover if not tended to properly can spread and be extremely invasive. My dad used it in his lawn when I was a kid in the 50s and 60s, and everything was fine if we mowed and edged regularly.

Just researched clover myself to fill in my garden beds instead of needing to inevitably swap out mulch. Looking like it's going to be a good alternative after all.

My yard has lots of clover. Problem is we (people and dogs) are all getting stung. I'm going to have to figure this out for next year.
My family lived in a home in Massachusetts from the 1880s and the whole backyard was always mixed clover & grass and I always though those really square thick grass laws look weird, like don’t sit on me. I just added a ton of clover to the lawn ti hopefully curb some erosion
Here in Salt Lake City, I love clover and have a bunch of medium-size Dutch clover. I experience two "gotchas": (a) It's less drought-resistant than most of my grasses (contrary to your experience). (b) It's less resistant to traffic than most of my grasses. I never use chemicals, and I wish I had an easy way to reduce the dandelions, which tend to take over everywhere.
Dandelions are there to raise up calcium. Give your lawn calcium. Ashes are a high percentage of calcium.
I have clover in my garden, the large and the small variety, it covers well, my problem is the long variety isnt really where I would want it but if i let it grow is is very pretty
I buy 10# of seed every year. I sow it midwinter in the midwest.
My dad seeded our yard with a lot of small white clover along with the grass that was there. We just had to watch for bees when barefoot!
In my area of Australia keeping the grass mown down to acceptable levels is mandatory because of a: fire and b: snakes. Something that doesn’t need mowing would be so much easier!
super info....my yard is weeds, stickers, abused, no one took care of it...I will look for micro cover and other clovers..there is something about inoculated clover...is that super important Ariel? if you know, .thanks Ariel, thumbs up
Inoculated seed just adds the symbiotic bacteria that thrive with that clover variety along with the seeds. If you have a really dead chemically destroyed area, that's probably helpful. If you have a wide range of bacteria already thriving in your soil, it shouldn't matter so much.

Burley, who is now really burley, is a great interruption. I am about to seed a patch of garden that I have removed shingles from and will definitely look into micro clover seeds. Purple clover is much better for butterflies, etc than white but grows taller as you say.
QUESTION: Does it die off in the winter? I'm in Chicago and I'm worried it will expose the soil and I'll have a muddy mess till late spring when it comes back.
How long after overseeding the clover did you mow your grass? My clover has germinated beautifully, but a recent rain has caused out grass to shoot up. I'm worried it may shade the new sprouts too much, but I'm also worried the lawn mower will crush the new seedlings! Any advice?

Your sunflowers are standing tall. Mine were volunteers this year. Some had thick stalks and really put out lots of blossoms but a good rainstorm came through and they tilted. Does anyone have a solution for next year's garden?
I use tomato cages with the tines sunk into the soil. Also works well for phlox and milkweed plants that I grow for the butterflies.
A sturdy fence or trellis maybe?
