I supervise a 2000 ewe herd and I have found the the moment a ewe is slow to feed or slow out of the corral on the winter range, catch her and if she is starting ketosis her breath will have a very faint sweet smell. If treated right then and taken it and put on good feed at the farm she will hardly ever go down.

The ketotic ewe needs to increase glucose in her blood. The best way of doing this is with propylene glycol, which is absorbed quickly from the gut and converted directly into glucose in the liver. Contrary to intuition, high energy feedstuffs like molasses and Karo syrup do not do this efficiently because they are metabolized into other products by the rumen microbes rather than being converted into glucose. Time is of the essence in ketosis.
