  • Step into the behind-the-scene filming of our documentary, TOMCAT TALES and the raw uncut interview some of which was not used in the Final Cut film. Get your popcorn ready to hear what it was like to survive a night ejection at 400 feet and heading for the fireball of the Tomcat!

Yah 1 engine shld fly but all the technical terms wow real pilots

Why did the jet not continue flying single engine?

The low speed, low altitude, attitude, and asymmetric thrust created the conditions for the plane to depart controlled flight. Being so low they had virtually no opportunity to recover.

He explained that. He completed the immediate action steps for the fire indication, but even with full burner on the operating engine his airspeed was decaying and the aircraft began an uncommanded roll. Time to get out.

@@dhones23 He didn't explain whether or not the jet is supposed to be flyable in that situation.

@@paddyohenry6428 Actually, he did. Engine failure or shutdown while low and slow is bad, but he felt he should have been able to fly away if everything was right. He mentioned he might have had the nose too high, preventing normal acceleration. Remember, this happened very quickly, at very low altitude, there’s no time or room to have a second chance. If he was pitched up even a few degrees high and the airspeed began to trend down, then options disappear quickly. Once the jet does something like begin to roll, you’re not in control anymore. If you’re down low when that happens it’s time to go, immediately.

@@dhones23 I didn't hear him say that. I heard him say he "pushed the throttles up", which might not even be "full burner" as you say. He did say the airspeed decayed and it eventually started rolling, but that does not address whether the Tomcat was supposed to or was expected to be able to recover from a lost engine at that altitude/airspeed.
