Just watched an LL COOL J documentary.
After he wrote the song "I need love" he was heavily scrutinized and criticised in the industry from 87-90 with that track.
He went to his grandmother for guidance and council.
She told him
"Todd, go to the basement and write a song, and knock 'em out"
This was the response he took from those words from her about his treatment in the industry at the time.
💗

Shouda been grandmama said knock u out then 😂. Crazy where inspiration comes from tho.

Have seen ‚The Hard Way‘ and in the 90ies it was so difficult to get some sort of tracks in Europe.

@@hansmuller3651 I lived near Paris, still, sounds from abroad were pretty overpriced if not coming from the Virgin megastore. Shoplifting from those was a rite of passage.
Plenty of good writers singers that I'm glad don't fit radioshit. but also too much marketing skills are wasted on people who have nothing but to be polite as guidelines. Call me old school but I hear with my ears. SYA made a point not to show her face and bring a teenager on Tour to represent her. that's how shallow we think people have become.

This song came out and basically was the song that most white people got into rap with. But what we didn't know was underground there were things going on like NWA that a few years later would change the scene...it was cool to have your album have a warning label for lyrical profanity.

This song proves LL cool j was the 1990's uncrowned King of the rap world, not just 2Pac and Big.
Facts. All-Around, LL was the GOAT until Busta Rhymez took that title all through the 2000s all the way up to "Look At Me Know." And that's a feature. Busta Rhymez's greatest songs were features, and he still has solo-hits on par with LL. I mean Janet could have done a song with LL...But she chose Busta. Think about it lol.

Love it when he says that
"Mama Said Knock You Out" is a hit single by LL Cool J from his album of the same name. The song famously begins with the line "Don't call it a comeback/I've been here for years." Before "Mama Said Knock You Out" was released, many people felt that LL Cool J's career was waning; his grandmother, who still believed in his talent, told him to "knock out" all his critics.[1] The song was produced by Marley Marl[2] with help from DJ Bobcat along with LL. The single reached number 17[3] on the Billboard Hot 100, was certified Gold by the RIAA, and won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. The song takes various shots at Kool Moe Dee.
The song was featured in the films The Hard Way (which LL Cool J also appeared), Gladiator, Encino Man, Bébé's Kids, Kangaroo Jack: G'Day U.S.A.!, Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son, Happy Feet Two, Fist Fight, and The House.

LL COOL J energy on this track is insane! With a little guidance from the video on my channel about how artists are blowing up, he is now getting the attention he deserves.
I'm here for the song
So happy he is finally in the hall of fame! True legend ❤️

What I learned from this:
Don’t call it a comeback
He’s gonna knock you out
He’s gonna take this world by storm
And he's just gettin' warm

I used to listen to this when I was 63, and now I'm 17. This will forever be a classic.
Still jamming to this in 2023. " I gotta thank God, because he gave me the strength to rock hard." most underrated lyric ever.
Amen I couldn't agree more
2024 just need this song for wake up.
LL is definitely Top 5 of all time. Groundbreaking

An absolute hip-hop classic and still one of the hardest tracks around! LL Cool J literally knocked this one out!
This hits hard❤
Among the most powerful final verses I've ever heard. Violent, hilarious, and delivered with a menacing, constantly changing rhythm.
0:09 will go down as one of the most iconic opening lines of all time (for a song)

It already has
La di da di we like to party we don’t cause trouble we don’t hurt nobody
Takes me back to when I was in my first yr of college in 1992 & this was blasting in the billiards room.
Just when people had counted LL out-he came back with the biggest hit of his career 🐐
Douglass Barnes was a diss to Africa bimbata
James Dones it was a diss to kool moe dee
This song is so good, I'm not even a fan of rap (especially these days) just a fan of good music.
“I'm blastin', outlastin'
Kinda like shaft, so you could say I'm shaftin'
Olde English filled my mind
And I came up with a funky rhyme” simple yet so brilliant for lyrics
Yeah the mind...
Because "Shinbone wants statehood"
LL COOL J's voice is amazing to scratch with. 🇬🇧✊🏻
The marriage of his powerful delivery, poetic storytelling and the music under him is masterful.
The percussives in his voice hit accurate like an atomic clock, that's some amazing vocal work. And I really appreciate the delay/reverb on it, it's like you can hear the brick walls and concrete.
It’s A Classic Rap Song 🥊 in my opinion.
take a listen on his response to canibus diss 20y ago. he killed him in 5:30 minutes of crazy rap skills
3:22 Now that's a lotta damage
When I grit and kill at 'will'...when I jammy in my hand!
"Shinbone wants statehood"
When this song came out along with the album shook up the game and the culture!!!!! The great Mr Smith 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
The Vevo date description is incorrect saying 1995. The album "Mama Said Knock You Out" was released in September of 1990, and this song of the same name was the fourth single off the album. This music video came out in early 1991.
Finally someone who thought the same thing as me
Randy H. Yes indeed! 😉
I was gonna say... I'm sure this was pre 95! Was gonna guess 91. Well played sir
Thank you! Here I thought I was mistaken and not the internet
It’s when vevo uploaded it 🤦🏽♂️
Can anyone explain why LL isn’t making music like this today? This song was insane
because this is a product of its time. This won't sell today, sadly.
because he is rich now
@@elreyabeja4539 Naw bro its worse than that. THIS? This would sell today, because its pure demonstration of talent... and its the talent that's missing, because nobody wants to practice, and nobody understands how music is passed down. We lost it to social media imo, around 2015-16.
Also the Gaye family made it so many major musicians have to be extra careful with their lawsuit against Robin Thick and Pharrell. They dont want to make music anymore.
@@timmyp6297 Agreed, and because Parents won't make them go upstairs and "Take out the Garbage"!
He’s actually in that show NCIS if you want to see him somewhere !
*"DON'T CALL IT A COMEBACK!"* ❤
NOW THIS IS HIP HOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
0:10 When LL Cool J said " Don't call it a comeback" 😏 I felt that in my heart. 😍😎💯👍
I did to !!! Couldn't say it any better man , it struck like lightning when it hit ...

This Song Revived LL's Career(with Jack the Ripper), This Put him back on top in his feud with Kool Moe Dee, and He got this idea from His Grandmother who believed he still had it. This Proves That Cool J is one the greatest lyrical tycoons in the history of rap/hip-hop and that he deserves more love as one of the greats.
I always thought LL Cool J through this rap at Big Daddy Kane because Big Daddy Kane responded with his rap, and next thing you know, Big Daddy Kanes Career was over. You never heard anymore from him.
i remember it as a corny song but listening as an adult now this is hard
A message to the new generation, don't let this type of rap die...
I'm pretty sure classics like this don't die...
To late but also other person is correct. This will live on forever. It's a masterpiece.
This ain’t going no where even have a physical copy of this album 💿
Old school rap never die from brazil 🇧🇷💪
