Your dad is amazing for riding that fari know that grind.. I used to ride bikes for MS and cancer then i was hit and run over by a truck while training for a 150 mile cancer ride.. that destroyed my bike and ended my riding career. Really love that your pops came on part of your trip👍
You're not an experienced boater until you have run aground. Character is best defined by how we deal with adversity. I know it's a shell shocker the first few times but that's the reality of living and not sitting on your couch. Happy boating....
In 1952, my mom took sick and my grandparents brought me to St. Augustine. I had my picture taken with the Lions on the mainland side of the bridge & remember running around the fort with my cousin. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.

Running aground is one of those lessons we all have to learn when boating. I’ve spent over 40 years sailing and boating on the same body of water and last year finally found the rock with my name on it. Bent rudder shaft, busted up prop. Limped back to dock but no leaks. Insurance can be a wonderful thing! Keep on keepin on. Stay safe and smiling along the way.

You probably already know about Bobs432 tracks? We follow them closely and they are free. The path is confusing through Georgia so we really relied on them. Great video!!!!

Great episode. How about mounting another switch at the windlass so that the bow person can control it rather than relying on the captain? Seems like that would simplify things sometimes.
Hi guys, so sorry about the grounding, do you dive down to check for any hull damage? How did Ollie take the sudden hit? What would you have done differently to avoid the grounding, another words what was the lesson learned. Hope it was sandy bottom. Were you taking a short cut? No worries, just part of life! Didn’t dive down, but would have if we noticed any water in the bilge. Or if it was rocky, but it was a sandy shoal. Actually not too sure about Ollie, we were all hands on deck haha but she didn’t bark or scramble around so I think she was just fine! We were going 3 kts so she wouldn’t have fallen anywhere… basically we followed the natural waterway which went into the inlet. It wasn’t a shortcut but wasn’t longer either. In the future we’ll just double check the route - honestly we do that most days already but today there was a lot going on with guests, a long day so trying to get on the road quickly, and poor weather… but as they say, it never goes down when it’s 70 and sunny 😁😁 cheers and thanks for watching Steve! I think I ran aground more times the first year I owned a boat than all the other years combined after that. But, I still seem to find the bottom about once a year or so!
That Channel has a Can because they have to move it because of the shifting sands. I told my Captain/boat owner we were out of the channel. He told me he was find, the digital charts told him we were good and just like that we hit ground. lol You can not rely on digital charts there.
Ponce inlet. Aunt Catfishes is a pretty good seafood restaurant. Bridge off southern end of island. A1A. If it's around one of the NASCAR races, might meet a legend there. Petty's eat there and we were there when Richard Petty came in. Also, commotion on water. FCW officer there, 35 year veteran, said he'd never seen it before, but it was Manatees mating. (Underwater so not really as creepy as it sounds that we were watching) Reminder: North end Cumberland Island, South and North ends Jekyll Island and South end St Simons, HORSEFLIES!!! You'll be there soon. Haven't boated farther north except closer to Savannah and didn't have a problem.
Oh neat thanks for the recommendations! We are actually cruising through Savannah as we speak 😁 the horseflies we’re a sideshow to the gnat fest! But we enjoyed it all nonetheless 🤙
We are thinking of Key West being our wake crossing but who knows! Atleast both places (KW and Fernandina) are in Florida so not too different all in all 😁
St Augustine is great they have the Spanish Fort they have a trolley that takes you all through the city shows you the old sites and they have the world's most haunted hotel a scary place to stay you want to try it it is one of the oldest cities in the country it's beautiful and the people are very nice
No… I actually just found out that this type of indicator exists at all from our neighbors in Vero Beach… I can see how helpful it would be! Haven’t done any research for cost / installation difficulty though
@@SchoandJo WHEW! I was a little concerned. I had the misfortune a long time ago to hit a rock at 'snail speed' and it punched a small hole in the hull in my bow which I discovered when I checked the foreword bilge. It was nothing that the bilge pump couldn't handle but it did mean some repairs were in order.
@@SchoandJo I can see how one could get turned around at the intersection of Ponce Inlet very easily. I don't use navionics anymore, the cost per year is too high. have fun and Keep it in the ditch!
Please use Aqua Map’s….. The map program you’re using is only a suggestion and as we all know we travel the ICW if you follow the magenta line 30% of the time you’ll be in the grass
Yep… can’t follow the magenta line! Navionics is pretty good, this is the only time in 2k+ miles it’s led us astray 😁 but if course it happens in a shoaly inlet where the markers are everywhere else but missing right here… we use Aquamaps too - it’s great!
Would be nice! We’ve learned that you can tell a lot from the graph of the down sonar, if that graph is slowly inclining then you should probably go slower just in case!
Those tracks that Navionics plots for you are the worst. Keep relying on those, and you should expect to run aground quite a bit more often as you progress. Learn to research your route and plot your own tracks utilizing more sources. Sorry if that sounds curt, but nearly 30 years as a professional navigator has taught me some hard lessons. Chiefly, Navionics is pretty terrible (in my opinion.) It’s a shame that far too many people rely on it as their sole source of information. I wish you well on your journey. Keep on learning. 👍🏼
Sounds like you have a lot of experience navigating! This is probably the first time in ~2500 miles that Navionics has led us to waters that didn't have markers... Normally we carefully check the route but a combination of rain, low tide, and a little less preparation than normal! Normally we cross-reference navionics with aquamaps USACE surveys for tricky sections of the ICW... seems like there's always enough information out there as long as you take the time to read it and stay aware! 😁

At any rate, keep checking, double-checking, and rechecking those sources and you continue your journey. USCG Local Notice to Mariners won’t hurt either, btw. 😉 Fair winds…and hopefully less “free prop polishing.” 🤪
Ugh. I've heard of other loopers following the auto route that way and bumping too. But now you know not to trust auto routing blindly. Check each step and verify it's not routing you through an unmarked "local knowledge" channel before you set out for the day. Just my advice.
That’s probably one of the most challenging parts of the loop as a whole. Every day is a new cruising ground with different tidbits of advice and local knowledge. Great tips - Cheers!

Running a ground in Ponce Inlet is a right of passage 😀 no markers in sight. I’m glad you guys were able to pull off of it. Love your videos. 😀

Just curious, wasn't mentioned, did you check the foreword bilge immediately after 'hard' grounding to sound the forward compartment?
We did! We just cut it out of our long talking section of the video 😁 Fortunately it was a sand bar (and we were going snail speed) so no damage!

Part of boat life.the bottom of channel change everyday .a foward sonar in the future can prevent this
Would be nice! We’ve learned that you can tell a lot from the graph of the down sonar, if that graph is slowly inclining then you should probably go slower just in case!

Guys I retired after 36 years as a Yacht Captain. Never assume never stop learning. Believe you are going to find the bottom . It's Yachting.
