  • Today was a very productive day in the woods!! Jim & the horses are logging today at Paul Smith's College. After a productive morning, Jim is scaling logs and the horses are maneuvering around a big stump!
    Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

    Hi Everybody, Welcome to the commentary of "Working Horses with Jim". Today is another cold snow packed in the crevises day in Alaska..., but I love it! That's why I'm here. Multiple Choice: Is it A: petting and combing horses with Jim. B: watching horses hooves grow with Jim. C: riding horses with Jim in the pasture. or ... D: Working Horses With Jim.
    If you guessed "D" then your in the right place. I hope I made you laugh.
    I not only love the Working part but I love the Horses part and family Life and The Love Jim and Brenda and family and friends share on this place, this channel. Thank you. Regarding this video that I will watch multiple times until all the goodness digested, Jim , that 5 log 16 feet tree was spectacular, that tree 16.5x5=82.5 feet of sawable log! +30 foot top pole + 1 foot stump= around 114 feet! That tree about 120 feet tall! Solid good wood, that in part is why it went over so hard, the hinge fibers so strong, notice Jim got it leaning good then thinned the hinge with the saw, everything intentional, nice work my Man, I enjoyed that.

    I apologize if my comment sounded a bit terse.Logging is a major part of Jim's life and a large part of why those horses are so well trained etc. I selfishly would rather be in the barn grooming horses, playing with kittens, and as Jim would say...seeing what kind of troubles we can get into closer to home!😊 It's all wonderful to be able to watch this kind of life and I'm very grateful they share it with me/ us.❤

    Hey Jim and Brenda, A great video today , which was very productive with over 4,400 board feet of timber skidded to the landing. . Baron and Bill were working great this afternoon . The 15 F is a conducive temperature for the logs to slide over the terrain easily which makes it easier on those fit horses of yours. For a 4 year old gelding Baron is doing a wonderful job. Assisted by the magnificent Bill.

    The "B Team" is doing an excellent job logging with you!! I never see Baron nipping at Bill anymore! Being a year older as well as being gelded has turned him into a fantastic draft horse. I love watching him. He is a gorgeous horse. Hoping Duke and Earl will be as great as Baron is once you work a little more with their training!!

  • @johnkomosa9508
    @johnkomosa9508 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Replying so I do not bump cancel and loose it all, the stump stopped the load dead in its tracks, reminded me of when Dad would hit a rock plowing and the plow would drop right there as the hitch released, then come in at an angle and pull the plow and big rock up. Release hitch so not to break equipment. If that log was turned half way it would have hit the edge butt taper and jumped over, I bet no doubt Jim has used the butt taper in the base log to rise over rough terrain. Ok, so long I better stop, but I wanted to finish by saying I like this channel for reflection to the past, work of the present and knowledge for the future, in addition to enjoying the content, the people and the commentary, excellent education and safety. In this line of work, sometimes you only get one chance.
    Ok save some water in the prime can for the next video. Don't forget to fill the prime can. 😊
    Thank you.
    Ps; I checked the comments, everything covered..., at least twice. :-)

    That’s a good days work. The team of Baron and Bill seems to be great at logging. I was noticing that at home on the farm Baron seems to “dance in place” quite often when he’s supposed to be standing. In the woods that appears much less? Thanks for sharing your experience.

    Just curious Jim as to what scale or table you use for estimating standing timber? I just inventoried close to 200 acres of mixed sawlog/firewood for a potential customer and I use the official Ontario government Ministry of Natural Resources tables published in 1978 before metric took over (I don't work in metric)

      IMO, Jim and Brenda do an awesome job filming, editing, and managing the content of their videos. But I definitely hear you: I LOVE the horses, too. We all do! If I were to ever win a big lotto, I would 1) establish a big no-kill animal rescue center and farm in our town, and 2) buy Jim and Brenda a big rock picking machine for getting the rocks out of their pastures. In the old days, people (e.g. Ireland) used to make rock fences out of the rocks they gathered.
