  • This video is a reference depicting bad ice machine components due to lack of maintenance. This situation could have been prevented if proper care was taken on the owners part to have a program in place. The machine was put into service in February 2018 and failed in October 2019.

    I have the exact same auger and motor I need to replace. So you said it’s Bout the same price as a new machine

      Depends on the size of the machine. Various models range from $4,500 to about $5,500 depending on who you buy from. The evaporator is a part number 02435021 and cost is $1,388.32 and the auger (12 inch long) is a A38071021 and the cost is $807.34. If you know the refrigeration side of an ice machine and have the tools, you can repair and replace for less than a new machine. Good luck

    So I just replaced the water seal on the bottom of the evaporator because the old one was leaking and filling up that little plastic pan. So, with the new one installed I still have the same leaking problem. Any ideas what my problem could be?

  • @makindinero

    Rebuild it every 2 years or replace it your choice. The gear case shank gets sloppy and it crashes

    Bad evap
    Bad water seal
    Possibly bad gearbox assembly
    New bearing
    Bad Auger
    Excessive scale build up ( might need to re insulate some areas
    Yeah all that alone in parts only not to mention labor you are going to pay close to what a new nugget machine is. If its under warranty your good but in my personal opinion these nugget/flaker ice machines will go down most of the time I would not recommend for residential use

    I keep getting dark brown ice even after cleaning. Water going in is clear. Could it be a rusted auger causing it, or a bad bearing? You would think stainless steel parts would prevent this. On top of that, after my 2nd cleaning it suddenly stopped making ice. It's not taking water and everything is freezing over. The full bin light is not on. I'll turn it off over night and try it again tomorrow. I'll look for any resets too. It did squeal a few times. It's 9 years old.

    • @East_Owl

      Definitely check the breaker bearing and water seal. You’ll have to take it apart. If you remove the breaker and auger you should be able to look down into the evaporator and find the culprit. If it is the water seal it’s possible water got into the gears in which case it will need to be replaced. Check for damage on the auger and evaporator walls too. Empty the water from the evaporator by pulling off the tube connected at the bottom and catch the water. You may find metal shavings or a clue to what’s going on.

      Thanks for the fast reply. Started up the Scotsman and it's at least making ice again. Now I'll wait and see if the ice stays clear after my cleaning. I'll keep you posted.

    Gus - I'm trying to replace my graphite bearing. I ordered the replacement part and I can see that the current one has been worn down because its an oval shape now instead of a circle. How do i get the old graphite bearing out in order to slip the new one in? Do i just place the new one in when I get the old one out or is this glued in (based on how hard it is to get this old one out!) Also, any other maintenance i should be doing while i've got this apart? When i pull the auger out there is graphite all over the bottom of it. Also, i don't have any grease in mine but it's a slightly different model (SCN60 - home unit). Any advice is appreciated here. pics available if there's a better way to contact.

    • @East_Owl

      There is some hardware below the evap that needs to be removed. You’ll have to recover the refrigerant as well.

      Remove the insulation below the evap and you’ll find some bolts that need to be taken out so you can pull evap away from the drain pan and gear section.

    • @East_Owl
      @East_Owl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The manufactures recommendation would be to replace auger, freezer and breaker. It’s a liability issue if left damaged as it’s possible a passerby won’t know if there is any risk of injury if they get ice. I’d follow the MFG guideline.

    • @East_Owl
      @East_Owl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven’t used any aftermarket parts. If I remember correctly, you’ll need a bearing press to get it inside the breaker. For ease we just replace the breaker.

  • @BartSimpson-nr1dy

    So, what is it about preventive maintenance that would have saved this machine?

    • @East_Owl
      @East_Owl  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eyes on this on a regular basis would have ensured the breaker bearing would have stayed properly greased and the rest of the machine would have been inspected as well chemically cleaned to remove build up. It’s better to catch a worn bearing before it becomes a bigger problem.

    • @BartSimpson-nr1dy
      @BartSimpson-nr1dy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gus Garcia - this bearing should not wear this quickly if well manufactured. And, the manufacturer I believe has changed to a sealed bearing. And there should be cleaning and sanitizing instructions with the machine as well an amber lite to inform the owner the machine is in need of cleaning.
      Sounds like the installer did not educate the owner as he/she should.

    • @BartSimpson-nr1dy
      @BartSimpson-nr1dy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gus Garcia - as well, the NO model I believe is now a sealed bearing as with the HID. and as I remember, the no longer made MDT series had an open bearing too.
      If installed in 2018 and the unit new when installed, I say the bearing should not fail in this short time. Probably the seal failed allowing moisture into the bearing.

    Can you replace the water seal without having to remove the line set?

    • @chipcrossland1154
      @chipcrossland1154 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      bdmonist Yes, assuming you mean bottom seal, there are four bolts at bottom of the evap. where it attaches to the gear box. 1/2 hex head bolts. Unbolt them and separate evap from gearbox. Lift if up high enough so you can see in evap. from bottom view. You’ll see a clip ring. Remove it, and reach in with a couple of fingers and grab and pull out. Make sure you clean everything thing up before re-assembling. I use a light drywall sand paper on the evap near the bottom. Just my experience - if you have bad bottom seal, good chance your gear box is full of water also. At this point you need to inspect the gearbox and see if it is. First thing to check is see if your gearbox drive shaft is loose. If it is you’ll need another gearbox, which may become unfesible for the customer. Your looking at at least 850.00 or more, depending on your resale price. If the drive shaft is solid ( not wobbly ), then unbolt all the gearbox bolts and pry the top off, with maybe two chisels ( one on each side). Then open and look at the gear oil, inspecting for water. Inspect rest of bearings in gearbox. If you don’t it’ll come back and bite you later. Replace the oil if everything ok or you have replaced the bearings. Now assuming you had a good gear box without oil in it to start with, you would wanted to check the ice breaker bearings. Again, that can be unfesible for the customer if they are bad. Also if you have a bad top water seal, inside the ice breaker, those usually need to be changed. Bad top seals will result in complaints of “dirty ice”. Some techs arn’t used to changing seals, especially the top ones, so all this has to be considered, again whether it’s feasible for the customer as well as your skill level.

      Yea, it’s funny because I was telling them for about a year and a half to let me set up a total break down of their unit to perform a proper PM and they told me it’s “working fine” and declined. Sure enough it went down. Once taken apart it was pretty disgusting. The public would not have eaten there if they knew what was going on at that time. I refuse to get ice at any restaurant not under my watch.

    What are the symptoms of bad bearings on it. Will everything turn as normal from the outside if the bearing are bad ? Tks

    • @East_Owl
      @East_Owl  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If no one has ever checked the bearing, its time to break down that machine and do it. The bearings need to be greased per mfg recommendations.
      At the start of a failed bearing it is possible it will still turn. If left unchecked it could lead to the auger scraping against the evaporator causing damage to both evap and auger to extreme cases of taking out the gears and motor. These machines are workhorses but if poorly maintained it will definitely cost a pretty penny for a repair of this magnitude.
