Not only did they take two weeks to inspect it, they also ate most of the sweets inside. The only thing left in the end wqs ahalf eaten bag of gummybears. A collector here on TH-cam in Japan has also had arcade boards destroyed by ebay's "global shipping program".

    • @relo999
      @relo999 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ohh I remember that, that has been years if not a decade at this point. However ebay's "global shipping program" is a MASSIVE scam. And it's a big reason why I rarely buy anything from the US as most ebay sellers from the US only want to ship internationally with GSP (Why they can't fill out a simple form is still a mystery to me), and if I do I do it without GSP. Every time I've ordered anything with it it's been damaged, and they act as a trusted customs middleman that heavily overcharges. They also repack stuff badly, to lower their shipping cost. (For context up till 2022 there were no import tax on electronics in my country, shipping would cost around 10 USD their "customs charge" was 20. I needed to pay 20USD "pre-paid import tax" for an item without import tax. They then claim you can get it back, but after 2 hours on the phone ebay pointing at Pitney Bowes US, Pitney Bows US pointing at Pitney Bows UK, and they pointing back to PB US. I got sick of it and gave up. I've tried a few times with other stuff but same shit)
      Granted GSP ain't US customs.

    • @airthrowDBT
      @airthrowDBT ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I got my first ebay negative feedback from a French buyer saying I should be ashamed of myself for how I packed his board loosely in a box and it rattled to death. I was confused and found out about Ebay's global shipping program. I package all PCBs with TONS of bubble wrap and extra inches in every axis before the box. They were utterly incompetent idiots.
      Edit: I am a U.S. seller

    • @kbhasi
      @kbhasi ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@airthrowDBTep, I've seen eBay enable GSP automatically without sellers knowing.
      I tried to buy something from a seller in the UK who wasn't aware that GSP was enabled on their account, and they cancelled my order. I eventually got so angry that I searched for and found a third-party package forwarder that allowed me to just buy an Amazon UK return of the same product (it was new but the packaging was damaged).

    1:41 possibly what happened is much of the damage happened in shipping from cutoms to final address, if that picture shows what the packaging looked like when opened, that heavy machine would beat itself to death during shipping. maybe customs did not put the screws back in or not enough of them and the thing exploded apart in shipping

    • @zazxazza

    This looks repairable to me.
    I know it's bad, and it will never be the same again, but it doesn't look from the photos that any PCBs are completely broken.
    I'm sure some components have been broken off the boards in places, and probably some scratches, but somebody with enough patience might be able to repair it.
    Disgraceful what customs did.

    • @piplup10036
      @piplup10036 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking the same. I think the only really hard part could be figuring out what those ripped wires/cables need to be soldered back on to.

    • @electronash
      @electronash ปีที่แล้ว

      @@piplup10036 That doesn't look too bad, either.
      One of the main cables looks to be a 50-pin SCSI cable for the CD drive.
      Some other random wires on the prototype probably aren't too hard to figure out.
      I did some reverse-engineering before, for things like the SNASM68K dev unit, mainly based on PCB photos alone.
      If somebody had the Pippin prototype to hand, and was motivated / determined enough, I think it's fixable.

    • @electronash
      @electronash ปีที่แล้ว

      1:39 On second thoughts, that cable seems to be connecting the top (green) riser card to the lower breakout board.
      The CD drive has as separate cable going to the lower breakout.
      The breakout board looks like the fully "custom" part which just connects everything together.
      The top green board looks like a Mac motherboard (logic board), which would make sense.
      The connection between the green mobo and the blue breakout board could just be a 1-1 pinout. The ribbon cable was just for convenience, and to allow the engineers easier access to both sides of the mobo, and to the lower board.

    • @electronash
      @electronash ปีที่แล้ว

      Ohh, the top green board is a graphics card.
      They are using the ribbon mainly to extend the RGB output to the lower breakout board, so they could put a connector on the rear of the device.
      I really want to have a chance of repairing this now. lol

    • @electronash
      @electronash ปีที่แล้ว

      (GoogleTube keeps auto-deleting my replies. It's incredibly annoying. lol)
      I found some more photos of another one of the prototype units (on Twits).
      The Pippin prototype is essentially just a Power Macintosh 6100/66AV, with the same gfx / capture card.
      The only real "custom" parts are the riser board for the gfx card, and the large blue breakout board for the connectors.
      This makes repair of the broken prototype even more feasible. The CD drive looks off-the-shelf, too.

    3:21 The reason sellers may not want to declare proper value is the risk of the carrier being more tempted to steal it. I remember one of my online pals once sold a rare PC game that sold at auction for about $500, and they had some issues come up, somewhat expected.
    And, Near's community had to raise commotion after a German seller was kind enough to loan them a box of very expensive PAL SNES cartridges for preservation purposes. It took that to get the package safely to Near, and hopefully eventually the games got back to the original owner after the process was done.

    That's really sad to see. Hopefully someone can try and piece it back together.
    I had an issue with customs a few years ago when I bought some NOS Atari 2600 carts from Venezuela. They ended up holding my package and wouldn't let it in the country (US) until I gave them the manufacturers business address or something. I was not only surprised that they actually contacted me, but also confused as the original Atari had been out of business for many many years. I ended up giving them the old Sunnyvale address and told them that the company had been out of business for years (I was afraid that giving the current info of what 'Atari' is today's would have made things worse as they're not the same company from the 2600 days). I was shocked but it actually worked.
    My guess is it was because the seller listed the value of the Atari carts as being worth something like $1 on the shipment declaration paperwork which raised some flags.
    In my case, at least it ended up working out... though what I bought was 1 million times less valuable than a super rare prototype. What they did here is not only tragic but insanity.
