Would someone be able to explain the dance of the dead interaction where all the permanents were exiled? Why did the kill of the enchantment not allow the permanents to come back?
By killing the enchantment he also killed the dragon, the dragon has 2 seperate triggers, by killing it with its first trigger on the stack the second ability tries to put back cards that the first ability exiled, however the first ability hasn't resolved yet, so nothing happens, then the first trigger resolves and permanently exiles his board
But why doesn't it trigger his second ability? Like if he was out on the field long enough to cause the first why can't those cards come back? WGD is a leave the field effect, it shouldn't matter how he leaves it...I'm missing something...
That's what I thought as well but there's supposed to be a convoluted ass way to royally screw someone by getting that result but like I said I must be missing something
The way I look at it the destroy target enchantment would be on the stack before or after the first ability of wgd resolves which means all the stuff would either stay or leave and then come back
The dragon 1st ability goes on the stack but before it resolve tear destroys the enchantment killing the dragon and triggering the 2nd ability of the dragon before the 1st goes on. so he brings everything from exiled (wich is nothing) then 1st ability goes and exile all his permanents
Worldgorger's ETB goes onto the stack (just like a spell). This is the exile effect. In response to it on the stack, Mike cast Tear, destroying Ryan's enchantment, and sending the dragon to the graveyard. This causes it's LTB effect to go onto the stack ABOVE the ETB effect. Since the stack goes First In Last Out, the LTB effect resolves before the ETB effect. Then the ETB effect resolves, leaving the permanents exiled forever.
@@PlayingWithPowerMTG This the old wording you can still find for example on Oblivion Ring. Today those effect have just one triggered ability, exiling for "as long as it remains on the battlefield". It sometimes still comes up when playing with the older cards though.
17:20 can anyone explain to me why Ryan’s cards didn’t come back after the Tear? Shouldn’t they all come back when the Worldgorger Dragon leaves the battlefield?
Can someone explain the interaction of why the permanents exiled by Worldgorger Dragon didn't return, once the Dance of the Dead was destroyed and the Worldgorger Dragon was sent to the graveyard? Isn't this a triggered ability that would circumvent Linvala? I'm sure I'm missing something...
As soon as the dragon hits the battle field it exiles all permanents also exiling dance of the dead, if dance of the dead is destroyed on the stack it would have to be destroyed before choosing the creature to reanimate or after the first trigger of wgd, then when wgd leaves play it would return all his exiled permanents
The way it goes is as such: Worldgorger is reanimated with Dance. Worldgorger dragon enters the battlefield and it's EtB effect that exiles goes on the stack Before the EtB effect resolves, the Elsha player Wear's the Dance with the Dead. This resolves and sacrifices Worldgorger, causing its leaves the battlefield return trigger to go on the stack. The stack is now 1. Worldgorger Exit effect, 2. Worldgorger EtB Worldgorger's exit ability resolves and fails to find anything in exile to return. Worldgorger's EtB then resolves, exiling the Anja player's board. This same principle holds true with similar interactions with cards such as Fiend Hunter, Oblivion Ring and Tidehollow Sculler; but would not work for newer cards such as Banisher Priest, Banishing Light or Kitesail Freebooter, which are not separate triggers.
"Garret cracks a windswept heath for an underground sea." Someone should start a counter for this, because I know I've seen him do this at least twice lol.
He destroys the enchantment at the point when the first trigger of the dragon is still on the stack. That way the dragon dies and his 2nd goes on the stack before the first resolves. What then happen is that the 2nd trigger resolves and everything comes back (but there is nothing to come back), then the 1st trigger resolves and everything goes away. // Enter trigger -> destroy -> Die trigger // Therefore the stack looks like this: On top: Die trigger; right under that: Enter trigger
the same trick can be used with Oblivion Ring ... react to the enter trigger and stuff doesn´t come back. Nowadays cards which have similar effects are differently worded, so that the whole effect resolves as one, to prevent such an interaction. (for example a new wording would be: Exile stuff, until xyz leaves the battlefield)
You can use Imp's Mischief to redirect Counterspell to Imp's Mischief. When Imp's Mischief resolves it changes Counterspell's target and leaves the stack, and Counterspell is countered by the rules of the game for not having a valid target.
Maybe it was a misnomer in the narration, but Ryan used Imp's Mischief to redirect Force of Will to Imp's Mischief. The narration should've been more clear. Sorry!
Can someone explain to me why Ryan didn’t get his permanents back from Dance of the Dead being destroyed? I would think he would since the dragon left the battlefield.
When Dance of the Dead resolves, it brings Worldgorger dragon onto the battlefield. The ETB ability goes onto the stack. Mike responded to the trigger by casting tear to destroy dance of the dead. This kills the aura and the dragon goes back to the graveyard. This triggered his LTB ability ABOVE it's ETB ability, since it still hasn't resolved yet. Since the stack works "First In Last Out" means the LTB resolves before the ETB. So, the permanents will return (but there are no permanents to return), then his permanents will exile after that. Since it was done in reverse order, they will be exiled forever. I hope this helps!

Great video, but just one question. On turn 11: could someone explain to me how the dance and worldgorger triggers interacted to cause Ryan's board to be permanently exiled? Why don't they return as worldgorger leaves the battlefield?
@@remulas13 ;P I imagine how the hell this challenge might look like every time and I believe they got a pool of challenges with them training every day to improve their skills in winning these challenges!
You activate Mirror Entity for 0, making everything a 0/0. You need to pump Atla to keep her alive during these activations in order to trigger the egg search.
I think it’s because of the order of the triggers in the stack. As he casts dance of the dead, the dragon enter the battlefield, triggering its ability to exile everything. But in response to this trigger, dance of the dead is destroyed, thus sending the dragon back to the grave, and triggering its other ability, to return everything from exile. But the “return from exile” trigger resolves first, then exiles everything, resulting in a empty board.
Has anyone seen any work on a godo combo inspired ghired list? The addition of two colors feels like it might help the general game plan of all in combo
When you discard a card with madness, you discard it to exile. So when a spell that targets your graveyard happens it does not affect the cards with madness. Misplay
Do you guys have advice on keeping track of abilities in stack battles. In my elsha deck I had complicated situations where I kept a lot of jeskai ascendency triggers and others on the stack, and since they are not visible, it was pretty hard for me to keep track
Sometimes it's hard to keep track of that. I'd recommend putting some dice on Ascendancy where you can increase and decrease as the stack builds/resolves.
We had an influx of new players into our playgroup awhile back, so we were all stacking things like they do here to help the new folks visualize it. What I did when we got a lot of new players into our pod was basically have little slips of paper for each relevant ability like that (for me it was Path of Discovery in my Sidisi deck) that I could physically insert into our stack. Just get a few different colors of paper and cut them up if you want to do that. Of course, if the order in which they resolve is not too important, using a die to keep track of how many triggers there are is just as good

Give glint horn Buccaneer a look from core 20
Oh man this is extremely close to what I asked for on the last video, i'm so glad you're doing it, it's a shame I can't see my boy sevinne but he sadly doesn't belong in a CEDH table. Great content!
At 17:28, why does destroying the dance of the dead permanently exile Ryan's permanents instead of returning them to the battlefield?
Amazing video and amazing editing. Everything is just amazing
This was a great episode, that stack! I'll echo what some others have said, this is the best channel for watching commander.
Force of will cant target itself in magic but he can redirect force of will to imps mischief because it's on the stack as it resolves
Imp's mischief redirected force of will to imp's mischief. It was just a misnomer in the narration. Sorry!
At 13:50 Mike could have "1: Draw a card" with top and Elsha at end of turn as much as he had mana. But maybe his hand was full enough.
@15:14 Why did the Folger's Kiki Die? I wasn't clear on that.
-1/-1 counters distributed through Volrath.
Playing With Power MTG ah gotcha. I don’t think I knew Kiki’s P/T before, usually it’s a part of a combo, not for value. Interesting, learn something new everyday.
All of his permanents shouldve returned when world gorger dragon left the battle field
That's what I thought as well but there's supposed to be a convoluted ass way to royally screw someone by getting that result but like I said I must be missing something
The way I look at it the destroy target enchantment would be on the stack before or after the first ability of wgd resolves which means all the stuff would either stay or leave and then come back
OMG this game, so tense. Glad that the player I was rooting for won !
A lot of great card ideas for my own lists here. It's fun to see what cheap cards show up in these cEDH decks.
Mike has some of the strongest counter game I've ever seen.
Would it have made more sense redirect th Force of Will to target the Gilded Drake?
can someone explain what happened at 17:20
The dragon 1st ability goes on the stack but before it resolve tear destroys the enchantment killing the dragon and triggering the 2nd ability of the dragon before the 1st goes on. so he brings everything from exiled (wich is nothing) then 1st ability goes and exile all his permanents
It sometimes still comes up when playing with the older cards though.
kevin bergeron gentes thx
Playing With Power MTG thx
17:20 can anyone explain to me why Ryan’s cards didn’t come back after the Tear? Shouldn’t they all come back when the Worldgorger Dragon leaves the battlefield?
So you guys missed the counter war, huh? The interactions in this game was amazing. Really enjoyed this episode!
Can someone explain the interaction of why the permanents exiled by Worldgorger Dragon didn't return, once the Dance of the Dead was destroyed and the Worldgorger Dragon was sent to the graveyard? Isn't this a triggered ability that would circumvent Linvala? I'm sure I'm missing something...
because since he did it in response to the 1st ability the 2nd ability of the dragon resolve first
As soon as the dragon hits the battle field it exiles all permanents also exiling dance of the dead, if dance of the dead is destroyed on the stack it would have to be destroyed before choosing the creature to reanimate or after the first trigger of wgd, then when wgd leaves play it would return all his exiled permanents
Hello anyone, Just wondering why Ryan's permanents didn't come back to gameplay after destroying dance of the dead. (17:19)
The way it goes is as such:
Worldgorger is reanimated with Dance.
Worldgorger dragon enters the battlefield and it's EtB effect that exiles goes on the stack
Before the EtB effect resolves, the Elsha player Wear's the Dance with the Dead.
This resolves and sacrifices Worldgorger, causing its leaves the battlefield return trigger to go on the stack.
The stack is now 1. Worldgorger Exit effect, 2. Worldgorger EtB
Worldgorger's exit ability resolves and fails to find anything in exile to return.
@@OldmanJables Thank you for clarifying sir. Playing the stack game I see.
"Garret cracks a windswept heath for an underground sea."
Someone should start a counter for this, because I know I've seen him do this at least twice lol.
How many counterspells are in Mikes deck? 73?
Why does the destruction of Dance of the Dead keep everything removed? It says when World Gorger leaves all the stuff comes back, right?
I thought the same. Please someone explain! D:
@@Avinaar oohh, that's so cool. Thank you!
@@Avinaar Thanks!
That was an awesome game. Earned my subscription!
You can redirect counterspell to itself? I thought they changed that and you need to choose any another legal spell on the stack.
it says counter target spell. as long as its already on the stack you should be able to change the targets to itself as a countspell is also a spell
You can use Imp's Mischief to redirect Counterspell to Imp's Mischief. When Imp's Mischief resolves it changes Counterspell's target and leaves the stack, and Counterspell is countered by the rules of the game for not having a valid target.
That appears to be another misplay, however, the FoW CAN be redirected to the Imp's Mischief for basically the same effect
Maybe it was a misnomer in the narration, but Ryan used Imp's Mischief to redirect Force of Will to Imp's Mischief. The narration should've been more clear. Sorry!
@@PlayingWithPowerMTG Game Rule Violation: antecedent unclear.
Looking at Folger's deck list, why was I not seeing an Ashnod's Altar or Thornbite Staff?
It's more of a combo deck with Mirror Entity.
That was awesome guys!! Can see why people say blue decks are supreme
That sensei's top counter battle lol
What is the art on Ryan's playmat from?
please look at B45t1s comment. I posted the Link to the pic there
Can someone explain to me why Ryan didn’t get his permanents back from Dance of the Dead being destroyed?
I hope this helps!
casual player here, could someone explain the 'misplay' at 13:28? thanks!
Windswept heath cannot fetch up an Underground Sea.
@@PlayingWithPowerMTG thanks man, those cards are out of my budget so thats why i didnt think of that i guess :)... Love your content, and keep up the great games!
I would love to see you guys build competitive decks on a budget. Like 100 dollars or so.
We are looking into that!
Hey do you have the gauntlet app for android user? Cant seem to find one..
I believe it's currently for iOS only.
@@PlayingWithPowerMTG awww..thats sad thanks for the reply though
Fantastic game. I was definitely rooting for Mike the whole time, though that stack got deep. Good plays all around!
Hey there playing with power, I know a few weeks ago you did a poll on the merchandise for the channel, will you guys ever make the Mana crypt coin?
I might have missed the announcement for it somewhere but I just want to make sure, thanks (:
We haven't yet, but we are working on it! We are looking at prices, getting some designs done, and looking into costs. We will announce it in our videos once it's available for sale. Thanks for your interest!
Can we please have the video where Ryan eats a whole stick of butter? Or how did you decide the winner of the challege? Whoever ate the most?
Mike even at three life with the storm/prowess win was really awesome he always seemed 1 or 2 steps ahead if the table
Great game! Did Mike really target pyroblast with veto? Seems so much safer to target the claim since veto cant be countered :D
That's what I thought too. Another counter could have just been aimed at mental misstep, making the veto's uncounterability irrelevent.
Yup, hard misplay, realized immediately afterwards.
Great video, but just one question. On turn 11: could someone explain to me how the dance and worldgorger triggers interacted to cause Ryan's board to be permanently exiled? Why don't they return as worldgorger leaves the battlefield?
16:32 - Ryan used Imp's Mischief to make Force of Will counter itself? The rules say a spell on the stack cannot target itself so I'm confused
It was a misnomer in narration. Specifically what happened was that Imp's Mischief made force of will target Imp's Mischief.
@@PlayingWithPowerMTG Oh I see now, thanks for the clarification :)
Im gonna create an elsha deck now bc i have grapeshot and top and a few other cards. Excellent episode
You should! She's a blast to play, if we didn't have to keep making new videos and decks I'd play her way more :D
There is a mistake in Elshas decklist - no Verity Circle there (12:40)
Thanks for another great match!
It seems that blue is a good color. (So many answers this game!)
Holy cow this game was amazing :D I LOVE IT!
But just a question in general: What are all these challenges you are doing to determin the starter?
I believe they are just a meme/joke to get a slight chuckle. Usually works for me haha
@@remulas13 ;P I imagine how the hell this challenge might look like every time and I believe they got a pool of challenges with them training every day to improve their skills in winning these challenges!
Great game! Thanks for the content!
Just checked the decklists. Why does the Naya deck include so many pump spells?
You activate Mirror Entity for 0, making everything a 0/0. You need to pump Atla to keep her alive during these activations in order to trigger the egg search.
@@PlayingWithPowerMTG Thanks!
A turn one Rhystic Study would be good, but what do you all think would be the best turn one play?
If you play krikk son of jawgmoth as commander you can win turn 1 with the right cards xD
I love Ryan's playmat. Where can I get it
Spells cannot target themselves, so the Imp's mischief would have to redirect the Force of will to itself, meaning the Force still resolved.
It was a misnomer of narration. The Imp's mischief has force of will target Imp's Mischief. Sorry!
I love Anje, and I am building a beautiful madness/reanimate deck with her leading the charge!!
Here's our primer on Anje if you're interested! tappedout.net/mtg-decks/anje-dragon-tamer/

Strictly better coumterspell will do that that a card. It's insane
Congrats
Looking forward to seeing these commanders Duke it out
What was the misplay at 13:30?
Force of Will can't target itself. But it can target any other spell on the stack, including the Imp's Mischief.
why not target the gilded drake though
Imp's mischief redirected force of will to imp's mischief. It was just a misnomer in the narration. Sorry!
12:37 Verity Circle didn't in Mike's decklist.
It was a meta swap.
I believe I swapped out the personal tutor because I didn't have a copy at the time.
@@AtRxBetrayal Thanks, I do love your Elsha deck. I also played Elsha, but not that competitive.

Was Mike drawing with Verity Circle each time Ryan activated Anje?
Sure was! :D
can someone explain to me why ryan's permaments remain exiled?
Tactical bump
I think it’s because of the order of the triggers in the stack. As he casts dance of the dead, the dragon enter the battlefield, triggering its ability to exile everything. But in response to this trigger, dance of the dead is destroyed, thus sending the dragon back to the grave, and triggering its other ability, to return everything from exile. But the “return from exile” trigger resolves first, then exiles everything, resulting in a empty board.
I still love Anje. Good try and good effort Ryan.
Has anyone seen any work on a godo combo inspired ghired list? The addition of two colors feels like it might help the general game plan of all in combo
If you have a list, Ryan would DEFINITELY be interested!
I'm personally subpar at brewing, but I'll see what kind of list I can come up with

"You can’t make a spell which is on the stack target itself."
Correct. It was a misnomer of narration. Imp's mischief redirected the Force of Will to Imp's Mischief.
Of course, if the order in which they resolve is not too important, using a die to keep track of how many triggers there are is just as good
Nice playmat playing with power.. where can i get that?
We are having some being made for later this year!

Why does the worldgorger Combo seem to be the prefered Infinite Manacombo? ITS so risky
It's the most compact combo in Rakdos. You can do it turn 1 or 2 with multiple cards. All the other combos require too much mana or don't have enough cards to support it fully in CEDH.
Can you do a Yarok deck?
