It's so sad that it's been 15 years. His career was just taking off, I still remember that day- he was my favorite actor. Still is. Hope he's resting easy wherever he is 🥺
Beautifully said! His death was the first (and so far the only) Hollywood death that made me cry. I'm glad he became an actor who provided us with great material but damn, I would've loved to see what his future as an actor would've been like.
He was my favorite actor too! Always will be. That day was definitely one of those shocking horrible traumas that you never forget, for me. I didn't think it was real at first, but when it was confirmed I started scream-crying my head off, and I'm generally a pretty quiet person. I can't believe it has been 15 years since the loss of our sweetest prince. I'm still gutted and always will be. The sheer unfairness, when so many scumbags and abusers live very long lives. Such a good man, a loving father whose daughter had to grow up without him, and the career part is tragic too. You probably know how it was to be his fan back in the day, how people would either say "Who?" or laugh and think it was just a crush on that guy from 10 Things/AKT. For awhile there, he was trying to sabotage his hearthrob image that the studios had pushed, and most of the movies he made during that time were critically panned, so it seemed crazy to believe in him so much as one of the greatest actors of all time, but some of us could see it and knew the rest of the world would catch up one day! He got some praise for Brokeback, that started to turn things around, but it also wasn't a movie everyone saw, and there was a lot of open homophobia towards it at the time. I'm still bummed he didn't get the Oscar for it. We were certainly vindicated with TDK, but it was bittersweet at that point. He was truly just getting started. 😢 I've yet to hear a single bad thing about him as a person. I do remember hearing he clashed with the Weinsteins, and that sure aged like wine. With all we know post MeToo, Harvey's power could have also been part of why he wasn't getting proper recognition while he was alive, but that's just me speculating. He hated LA after awhile, and with all that has come out and continues to come out, that makes more and more sense. Greed and exploitation are ruining art. Heath had a genuine artist's soul, and being in that fake and sleazy environment didn't sit well with it. Would you by any chance happen to know if there's any site that still has all his old interviews and other news bits on him? I used to frequent fan sites and even ran one for a little while way way back, but now when I try to search for things I remember him saying, I can't find much of it at all. Which is so sad, it's like the real Heath we loved was erased, and his story replaced with myths like the Joker role killing him. Those interviews were how I realized how special he was. Passionate, insightful, sensitive, and ahead of his time for sure. Even turned me on to some great artists like The Flaming Lips, Nick Drake, Jack Johnson. Even David Lynch to a degree, because of dating Naomi Watts and Heather Graham, so I wanted to see their work too. I also once sat right behind him at the movies, he had snuck in alone late to watch his movie Monster's Ball with the public. I had traveled 2.5 hours to see it in limited release at Laemmle on Sunset, and had also been late, so had to sit in the bad seats a few rows from the very front. I knew it was him, spent a good portion of the movie watching him watch it, but didn't bother him to verify. Verification did come though, bc there was a gossip blurb confirming that he was indeed there, I quote, "sneaking in just in time to watch himself boff a prostitute." 😂 But I can't find that anymore either, and I'm sad about it. Sorry for the long and late reply, haha, haven't gotten to nerd out about him in a long minute. ☺️
He was great joker. For everyone saying it was his last role or that it killed him your wrong. He had mental health issues to begin with and he was film the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. That was his last film and the one he was filming when he died. He was a great actor and deserves more than ignorance and internet rumors
Wow things would have been so different if he said yes to being Batman. We are so lucky he said no because my goodness he was incredible as the joker in the Dark Knight which is my favorite movie of all time. It's so sad that Heath ledger died before he could see that role on the screen. A lot of people seem to think it's because of playing the joker driving him nuts but it turned out it was actually a complete accident.
And thankfully he said yes and we had the most iconic on screen villain performance of all time if not one of the most iconic performances of all time period
At the cost of his very life. Heath was an introvert and suffered from severe insomnia his whole life. When he started the role of the joker he would refuse to socialize or go out with anyone to talk or get dinner with the other actors, etc. Rather, he’d instead go back to his hotel room alone and practice his lines in the mirror by himself. Over time he began to live in the joker outfit and would re-enact entire scenes all by himself in his room. He stopped sleeping almost entirely, getting maybe an hour or two of sleep every few days, and began taking large amounts of prescription pills. After the filming of the movie was done and they were finalizing it in the editing phase, Heath went to New York where he had an apartment. His body was found on January 22, 2008 by his housekeeper that would come to clean his apartment, and the toxicology report found traces of half a dozen prescription pills that he overdosed on. He died 5 months before the movie even released to the public. . When you watch the Dark Knight, you’re not just simply watching a great performance by a great actor. You’re watching Heath Ledger’s legitimate descent into insanity as he himself became the Joker.
Cristian bale is so good at acting that I never think of him as Batman when watching his other movies. If you’re good enough at what you do there shouldn’t be such a thing as a “career killing role”.

I'm sorry , but Heath Ledger as Batman 2005 would have been an Epic Fail . He didn't have the look for that role . The Nolan movies really were different. I can’t really think of any superhero movie like them before or since. There have been a lot of good superhero movies, but the Nolan trilogy were just good movies period.
The Joker role had NO contribution to his death. The only complaint he had was the stamina that he felt the role required. People who worked with him on the film and those in his personal life even knock down those claims. He cherished that role and gave us unforgettable beauty. He always dealt with anxiety, insomnia and a few other unfortunate things in which he took meds for. This would've happened either way.
Although Heath Ledger deserved the award, he never would have won if he hadn’t passed away due to the academy generally not taking super hero movies seriously. Best joker for sure though.
