- In this video I demonstrate how to play the song Girl Gone Bad by Van Halen. This song is of the bands smash album 1984 and features some of the most aggressive and ferocious guitar work by Eddie Van Halen on record. The swing and vibe of the song showcases how amazing the band was during this stage of their career and how inspired Eddie Van Halen was to be able to record in the freedom of his new home studio 5150. Eddie and Don Landee created a masterpiece with this album, and this track represents that to the fullest. This song is kind of a sleeper track overshadowed by the hits on the album, but is a fan favorite. And for those who hung on long enough for the final 2 tracks from 1984 were in for a shredding sonic treat that can only be explained by listening to the music itself. I hope you enjoy this lesson. I cover the intro, verse and chorus of the song. Perhaps in a later lesson we can explore the solo and other nuances. Please subscribe!

Take the days to teach this please 🙏. I’ve been(and I’m sure others) have been waiting years for you to do this song. This is the most underrated Van Halen song ever!
My favorite song of the album (Michael Anthony's too by the way). Those who watched VH US festival performance could have a preview of Girl gone bad's early version having VH brothers play it live together.
Huge thanks Marty for unlocking the code to that masterpiece!
When people ask me "who is the Best rhythm guitarist?", I play 1984 for them...
I Love this song, I love playing the riffs, and trying to play along to the song (can't play the whole song right, not even Close). This, Drop Dead Legs etc, This is Eddie using the Guitar to express feelings, colours, emotions, stories, sharing sheer Joy with VH fans... I don't know any other words to express it. Now, I Try, Try to get it like Eddie, but if you don't, don't stress. If you're not having Fun, in the Moment, if you're not pulling funny faces, or smiling when playing VH, you're doing it wrong, even if you're hitting the right notes... Marty, So many younger Guitarists, starting off will find this, and realize the Guitar is Fun. Yes it can be precision, technical, and hard to learn. But Dam, it can be the Most fun you can have outside the bedroom... Keep it going Marty, we all need a reminder, playing the guitar, young or old, we play the guitar because it's Cool, it's Fun, and riffs like this Impress people, and that's a bit of fun we all secretly like...
I might add, as I found out, using a little, and I just use a Little 'compressor', to get rid of the "dead sound", helps. And again, a Little, it doesn't hide mistakes, doesn't hurt sustain, but as they say, a little goes a Long way...
Marty hitting all the 1984 classics
Incredible song and tutorial for sure. Unfortunately, I’m not at this level of playing yet. Still, I can dream. VH Rules.
Thanks Marty! Definitely one of my faves from 84! Love all the open strings and peddle tones, really sets it apart to my ear.
I’ve been playing the tapping all wrong this makes sense been trying to play this tune since the record came out you nailed it marty😂
One of my favorite Van Halen songs the guitar is so tight one of Ed's best bravo Marty now we're talking love playing this song the solo is where the trouble begins for me its a B 😂 cool man thanks 👍
It's Van Halen's take on prog rock! Love this song and lesson; thanks Marty!
Thanks! Great lesson!
This is some kind of voodoo Marty! I just listened to this album last week, and afterwards specifically focused on this song, because I forgot how badass it was! I haven't listened to this album in a decade at least. Anyway, I was thinking about looking up how to play it, and BAM! Here you are! I have weird stuff happen to me all the time, like that. There's been countless times where I've thought of someone I haven't seen in months or years, and I'll see them a few days later. It's more than a coincidence. Thanks for this!
You bringing House of Pain and now Girl Gone Bad; two of my favorites. Well, ok maybe 2 of my 20 VH favorites. Great video, beautiful guitar, and thanks for taking the time to work through this one. Now I can go back and relearn it more righter 😅😢. Cheers
THANKS SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS
Excellent lesson Marty! Always looking to do more with tap harmonics and harmonics in general. This track has a lot of harmonic EVH goodness. Thank you man
That third chord played at the beginning is the first chord in Diary of a Madman ! Maybe Eddy was taking a little slice from Randy for this tune 😄
Great lesson, and killer tone, Marty ... also, I love that guitar!!! Thanks for all you do for us! 🤟🎸🥃🍹🍻🍺🏴☠️🇺🇲🧑🌾🌽🍅
Great lesson Marty! I especially liked your tone.
Rock the VH marty🤘🎸🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊
Wow. Thanks for making this video, I really appreciate all the work that you put into making these videos!
Randy rhodes diary of madman is the third chord. Awesome guitar and lesson. I gave up on learning this it was above my guitar playing ability until now.
Killer. I've always loved this song.
Killer lesson Marty. Gotta learn this weekend. Thanks🎸
Killing it Marty! Happy weekend!
Excellent!! Thank you!!
Cool guitar! Nice lesson Thanks Marty 🤘
Thank you for what you do Marty. I hope you keep it up.
You're welcome, thanks for the support and for watching!! 😎🎸
Thanks Marty! This is one of those elusive Eddie songs that’s difficult to figure out! 🙏😎
As always bro.... Sweet job and THANK YOU :)
Did I miss something the guitar looks great all three versions in one that things sick😊
Lazy eyes in the summer heat fresh from out of town now she's working on the street shaking poor boys down 🤘👍
This is awesome, I’ve somewhat already known the structure of the position Ed used in this song, but some of these riffs are so unorthodox, ugh, I’m struggling with my middle finger vs. my ring finger. Thank You so much for teaching me the right way. 😊
Yeah it’s a challenging song for sure. Just keep practicing! Your way may be right if it works best for you.... I just know how it is easier to play for me. When you get used to a certain way it's hard to change lol
@ Thanks Buddy, I’m loving Your lessons on this channel. I’m a HUGE fan of classic Van Halen!!! 👍😊
That third chord you mentioned is what I refer to as the Diary Of A Madman chord. There ya have it. 😀😀
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO EDDIE VAN HALEN 🎂🥳
Always down for some Van Halen ! There's a serious lack of videos on TH-cam on the 1984 and diver down albums ! Thanks Marty.
Any chance we can get some more Boston lessons ? Maybe 'Amanda' or 'Hollyanne' ?
👀😃
Thanks! Man I've been planning on doing some Third Stage stuff. Hollyann is one of my favorites!!
@ PLEASE DO !! Third stage is criminally underrated and one of my favorite albums of all time..
We appreciate you Marty !
The third chord is the same chord Randy Rhodes used for the beginning of dairy of a madman. Some sort of a chord
Sure is. And Randy borrowed it from Leo Brouwer’s Etude 6
🤘🏽
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I see you're playing the Krammer. I usually see you playing the Fender Frankie. Just wondering which you prefer and why?
I have the Frankie and love it, but I don't know if I'm missing out on something with the Krammer?😅
I just like to use different guitars for my videos for the fun of it and visual appeal. This is a custome made and custom painted guitar (all Kramer parts). It was made for me by my good friend and Nashville luthier Dion Edge. (Fellow Van Halen fanatic)
Ouch, my head hurts! 😭 Lol
He played a sample of this at the us festival for the first time in the middle of somebody get me a doctor the thumb stays in time all the way up the neck of the guitar😅
Love this song. People should go to BoneYard for an epic musical video homage to this song. It’s killa.
I was correct…almost a thousand views in 6 hours 😮
Don’t hate me, but I always thought “Girl Gone Bad” and “House of Pain” were more filler than killer.
I don't hate. I really like House of pain, but not at 1st, but it's grown on me. But "Girl Gone Bad", I have to disagree. Killer guitar, killer changes, and Dave get's to do the Dave thing. But each to their own, that's the thing about VH, there's So much variation, not everyone is going to like the same songs. Maybe it's the very reason that Guitarists are drawn to this song, that just music/band lovers are not as much...
No hate here my friend! Everyone has different taste. The more I see people break down Ed's techniques the more I realize how absolutely amazing Ed's playing was and still is today! Thanks Marty! R I P EVH we miss you 😢
Nah everyone is different but to me girl gone bad is one of the most ripping VH songs it's also pretty dam difficult to play his rhythm playing is so incredibly tight to me it's a masterpiece 🤘
Your opinion forsure man. Personally their the 2 best tracks on the album
Everyone has their own opinion. At first in 1984 when the album came out, I did not like it because of keyboards. It took me a good 20 years to understand side B of this album. Now I can’t even listen to side A.
