I live in Emerald Hill, South Melbourne, the major port for the shipping of goods into Australia. That bought a lot of the original settlers, but the Gold Rush made them the equivalent of todays billionaires. Gold made Melbourne the wealthiest city in the world 150 years ago, but the real wealth was in Bendigo and Ballarat. Google the Shamrock Hotel Bendigo to see the remains of a lifestyle that puts the Wild West in the USA into the shadows. As a young Teller in the ANZ Bank Relieving Staff, I turned 21 living in a superp mansion that the ANZ arranged for me to stay in. It still operates as a B&B called Bishop's Court because it was the home of the Bishop of Bendigo, that was not only one of the few Cities in Australia to have it's own Cathedral, but it had two. As my Mother in Law would say "The blatherskites". Phil.
