      Steadman Uhlich could not agree more. This guy is a professional teacher for one thing therefore he must be a hell of a gold miner as well.

    Thank You. I have watched a lot of your videos because I have just developed an interest in gold prospecting. I found your instructional videos to be very informative and helpful. I'm waiting for some equipment that I ordered online and anxious to go camping/prospecting around 2 November. I live in central Missouri but have a lead on some areas in Northern Mo. Once again, Thank You for the time and effort spent doing these videos. They really help people like me.

    Awesome as usual. You're the man bro. Going to make my roommate sub. We're going to go do some sluicing tomorrow in New Hampshire, so thanks to you I know a lot more than I would have. I really did think it was a bit easier and I'm glad I found your site. I can tell by the rest of the comments you're doing a lot of people favor by showing these videos. I hope you get up to a million or more.

    you need to make more videos I love them it was your videos that got me interested now I have a metal detector a homemade sluice box and some other tools for prospecting my two sons and I are going to give it a try this spring in eastern ohio an western wv thank you for all your videos I've watched all of them very comprehensible and very easy to follow

      +Michael Gerevics Glad I could help; unfortunately I am not in gold country right now, and I feel I've exhausted most of what is there to teach. Until California lifts the moratorium on dredging, then I'll go back and film some dredging videos :)

    A good example is Australia's Kalgoorlie tellurides, where people built houses out of telluride for a long time before realizing that it was high-grade gold ore. But while that is true, the amateur prospector need not worry about those. Even high grade gold ore is very difficult to extract without heavy equipment and chemicals, since it's often microscopic in the lodes.
    That's why we amateurs usually stick to placer and gold we can see, and it always looks like the gold in this video :)

    I literally just spent 8 hours watching your videos and have learned so much of the little details that you just can't get anywhere else. Thank you so much for being so thorough and trying out many different techniques with real expectations. I feel far more confident to go out and try some prospecting now.

    Yes, magnetite is often associated with gold, usually in the form of black sands (black sand is usually composed of magnetite and hematite, which look identical as sand, but hematite is non-magnetic) although sometimes in mineral form as well.
    As you say, it would never be mistaken for gold as it doesn't look anything like it. I should add that there are many, many ways gold can appear in lode form, often which look nothing like gold...

    thanks for the vidoe clips, this is only my second year in trying gold panning doing lots of homework until the spring time. Up here it happens around May. i fine a little bit of very fine gold in were I'm aloud to dig any ideals on how to best process real fine gold.
    thanks again for the clips they have help lots.

    For catching fine gold, a gold hog mat. For cleaning it, a blue bowl as you'll see in the next video or two that I post (I think #11 or #12).

    Is your Metal Detector sensitve to any of the minerals you've demonstrated (Iron Pyrite or others?)

  • @rodneywilliamholland
    @rodneywilliamholland 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    probably a moot point since the colour is different (and it fits your category of glittering) but it might be worth noting that the natural mineral magnetite is magnetic... This mineral can be associated with some contact metamorphic type gold deposits and secondary enrichment processes.
    I must say that your series on gold fossicking techniques is really good and explains the reason why my effort is often unrewarded.

    realize I posted a question on an earlier vid but what i would like to know is. does the type of placer mining you are doing require you to stake a claim or is what you are doing considered recreational mining I think in Canada what you are doing would require a free miners license and for me to stake the area but I am not sure

  • @HowToDrillAWell
    @HowToDrillAWell  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    No, I suppose I should have mentioned that things that fool a metal detector seldom fool the eye either. Quartz, Mica, and Pyrites have no reaction to a detector. If Quartz reacts, break it open because there might be a streak of gold inside.
    What fools a metal detector is other metals (iron, foil, lead, etc), and "hot rocks", heavily mineralized rocks like some types of granite, hematite, etc. Hot rocks sound "spongy" on the detector, as compared to the sharp zip sound of a metal target.

    I own 500 acres in Susanville you think I have gold on it?

  • @HowToDrillAWell
    @HowToDrillAWell  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, for that you need a crusher and probably some sort of a solvent or grabber for microscopic gold - like mercury or cyanide. All dangerous stuff. Out of range for most amateurs. I'd like to take a stab at it sometime though, see if we can find a more eco-friendly way of extracting it. I wonder how a good aqua regia bath would work on ore...

    All my black sand is magnetic but ends up at the bottom of my pan I believe it is magnetite but after I pull all of that out nothing is left but sand like creek sand am I doing something wrong or do I need to find a new place

    • @HowToDrillAWell
      @HowToDrillAWell  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      First, you should never use a magnet to remove black sand. It's as likely to snag gold and trap it in the sand as it is to help you. I suggest starting at the beginning and watching all these videos to get the basic idea of the method.
      Second, you should not have "creek sand" in the bottom of your pan if you're panning correctly. I suggest watching videos #2 and #3 in this series to see how to pan and try again. Done properly, you have nothing left but very pure black sand, and - if you're lucky - some specks of gold. And you *never* need to use a magnet in your pan.

    • @utuberine
      @utuberine 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      HowToDrillAWell I use a magnet but make sure there is a good depth of water over the sand and wave the magnet back and forth getting closer and closer until it finally leaps from the pan up through the water and the air. By then most of the gold has shuffled out of snags way. A second panning may reveal one or two specks. My magnet is N52. Bloody powerful.

    Your very good ! And alittle different , how long you been at this ? I did geology in college , how is what you know different ? Your sharp and crisp - right where my science style is weak , is this a family habit ? Dad or Grandpa ? Was a full time prospector ? You look too young to have 150 yrs. Of experience ,

    Anyone knows what type of stores you can buy a gold Washing pan in? And what can It cost?

    • @HowToDrillAWell
      @HowToDrillAWell  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually only specialized gold prospecting stores or rock shops, which are usually present in most gold areas. Or you can buy a gold prospecting kit including all the stuff you'll need directly from my website at wheregoldis.com/all_products.php

    I just had the opportunity to do some hard rocking on a quarts outcropping. Wow it was great! I'm in Missoula Mt. at the old garnet ghost town by Drummond Mt.
    even though I was working a 12 oz per ton ore vein I couldn't pull anything. The process is way to much for my abilities. There is a real good chance that area is going to explode with activity again. I felt like the new old ghost of Garnet. Lots of fun!

    This guy.... give bad advice.... I found a nice flake right on the TOP of some mud inbetween two boulders in a quiet spot... I do not have a pan but when i do check out my channel plan to get lots of gold

    • @HowToDrillAWell
      @HowToDrillAWell  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      First, that's almost certainly mica. Second, if by a freak chance a piece of gold was not on the bottom, that doesn't change the fact that gold is heavy and given a choice, it will ALWAYS go down. If it didn't, gold pans wouldn't work.
