Been watching you for quite a while, you give a tremendous amount of great information. You're massively underrated, I'm sure you'll see big growth in your channel soon. Greetings from Amsterdam!
I've noticed the big bowl burgundy glasses like the Zalto or Riedel Somm burg glasses do well with more complex and intense wines. When drinking Bourgogne or village level, the wine tends to disappear in the big bowl but it really makes the 1er and GC wines show more distinct separation between the notes. Love the Riedel performance series too. The tulip top does really make a difference to how you taste the wine. Thanks for the comparison!
I absolutely love the Reidel Pinot Noir glass. I was lucky to participate in a differential tasting with Maximilian Reidel and was amazed at what an effect the structure of a glass had on the wines we tasted.
Thanks for the great content. I'd love to see you compare some universal glasses in a range of wine styles and see if different glasses shine with different styles.
I have relied on Riedel for years, purchasing hand-blown glasses but after this video I decided to order the 'Performance' 4 stem set / four different bowls so it will be interesting to see how they come in. Thank you as always for your fine work!
I have Riedel Veritas - all varietals actually. The champagne / sweet wine glass was the most surprising to me during a tasting & the Pinot Noir / Nebbiolo offered the best aromas & overall experience.
Great timing. I just started shopping for some new wine glasses yesterday. I'm using cheap, crappy glasses now. I had two Riedel all around glasses that I broke but I loved them. Looks like I know where I'm headed.
My favourite is the "Gabriel Glas" which I like most and I think I will replace all the other normal red and white wine glasses I have with it because you do not need so much space in your closet. Apart from that I also sometimes use some very old glasses which are for sure not the best ones for tasting wines but they look great and that is why I like them.
Great video as usual. My favourite glass is the handmade Burgundy glass from Riedel. I love this glass and as a Burgundy and Nebbiolo fan I use these glasses a lot. I also use them for top quality white Burgundies as well.
You are very good with this (explaining wine without condescending.) Please do a video explaining structure in white wine and red. Maybe after that latitude versus elevation?
I've always stuck to relatively lower priced glasses, being a bit skeptical that price has that much impact on the actual tasting experience; this seemed to prove it right :) Love the channel by the way. Once I watch one video, I can't stop myself from watching another 2-5 videos at a time.
Fantastic show, again and thank you for making a session on glasses . Like you said, it is not about the price very much but how it brings the best of the taste. Anyway my story is that I have tried many glasses and stay away from the small ones which is just a waste. I got two large glasses (thankfully it looks very similar to your Bordeaux glass) and I have used them for about a year very happily. Thank you again for this video and please do not stop the sessions on good old grape varieties
I just bought eight new Riedel Performance glasses last week because all glass pricing is going up. Still not sure I love the look of them but they are quite lovely to drink from!
Only recently discovered this video. I’ve done a few ‘glass tastings’ myself over the past years and have a few favourites now: The Riedel Performance Syrah is the most universal glass for me, I love the Zalto Bordeaux for my favourite reds like Brunello and Brunello. Although I prefer the Riedel Performance Pinot for more mature Barolo and Brunello, and most classic Pinot. The best budget wine glass for me is an old series of IKEA that retailed for around €5 about 10 years ago. It is a red wine glass that looks similar in shape to the Zalto Bordeaux but has significantly thicker glass. I’ve bought a lot of them and we still use them when we have tastings with a larger group.
Should be very interesting to do the same for Bordeaux/cabernet sauvignon wines. Thanks for your educational yet right to the point videos. Very appreciated.
Love the zieher line ...I actually use their huge burgundy designed 'Balance' glass for champagne ...I've always been a fan of the Riedel u picked here...nice job, great commentary on the history.💪
I haven’t tried a lot of Pino glass, but the one I always go back to is the regular Riedel Sommelier. To me a good Pino can really shine in it. For my general fav would be Zalto Universal, and the much cheaper Lucaris Desire Universal.
Thanks for the video. I would love to see a video about sparkling wine/ champagne glasses for drinking these kind of wines (not as a universal glas). Also regarding younger champagnes (everyday kind of ones) and more special ones (aged and more complex).
I LOVE this. What a smart way to compare? I don't have any fine glasses due to budget. I tend to just go with small glasses for white, large glasses for red. And frankly the very thin expensive ones stress me out. I have too much anxiety about inevitably breaking them. Fantastic video.
Very interesting how the glass impact the not only the experience but also the smell and taste of the wine. I discover that once on home brew party. After the beer I tasted wine in one 450ml. tulip glass and it was very intense. The wine was merlot/mavrud blend. My favourite everyday glas is an old crystal glass pretty much universal with sharp edge very pleasant for the lips. One disadvantage is that it can be cleand by hand otherwise there are scratches when clean automatically.
I enjoyed this video! I think it's interesting how different wine glasses can affect the flavor. I have cheap wine glasses but have been thinking about making the jump to Riedel.
Riedel glasses are awesome, but they are soooo expensive here in Brazil that I only use them when I'm going to drink really good wine (I am so clumsy and I break a lot of glasses lol). For daily use I have a simple Bordeaux glass and smaller white wine glass.
Very interesting video, it's amazing the difference the shape of the glass can make to aromas. I never thought to use a champagne glass for anyday wine drinking, I may buy a couple now. I use the Riedel Extreme Riesling as my anyday wine glass, as recommended by The Wine Society in the UK.
Hi Konstantin, loved this video. Your favorite glass is also my favorite. I got those glasses as a gift many years ago. They are made for Pinot Noir, but I wanted them because they are also fantastic for drinking one of my favorite wines, rosè champagne. Cheers 🥂
Love the concept of blind tasting glasses. If you do more testing, please include Grassl Glass Cru. It is my #1 compared to Riedel Somm, Zalto, and Gabriel Gold. Still want to try the Conterno Sensory.
Forgive my ignorance about wine glasses-I'm still learning. I purchased a set of Riedel Pinot Noir Performance glasses today and I am so pleased to hear your review. I bought them because I personally prefer Pinot Noir and light red wines, but a lot of my friends prefer shiraz. Is it acceptable to serve Shiraz in a Pinot Noir glass or should I also invest in a set of Riedel Shiraz glasses to make the most of the wine when entertaining?
@@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine thank you! After a bit of investigation I found a dealer that sells the Riedel Performance Shiraz glasses at a great price. So I will buy a set. It’s an investment in my friendships after all! And perhaps I’ll be able to convince my friends of the beauty of Pinot Noir through these glasses? At least it will make for some good conversation and wine tasting. You have a fantastic channel by the way! Very informative and I appreciate your relaxed style. Thanks!
What I find quite surprising about wine glasses is how well you get used to drink from a certain glass. My wine glass collection embraces only wine glasses from Zalto which are extremely thin walled and filigree I would say. If I now drink wine from thicker walled glasses I’m usually get quite irritated at first and need some time/sips of wine before I get used to the other glass again. Nice video!
Really interesting and surprising video! I hope you continue the series with other types of wines and glasses. It would be great to be able to build a set of 4-5 glasses to enjoy the most out of different wines.
Great rating Thank You Konstantin! I've used older Riedel Vinum Burg, older Riedel Sommelier Burg & Zalto Burg, none of which are very satisfying for Nebbiolo/Barolo, but ok. Gabriel gold is a great overall performer, never ceases to amaze, also Riedel Extreme Burg, but totally blown away by Riedel Performance Pinot, excellent for nose, mouthfeel & elegant, well priced... my favourite by far! Thanks again for a great test & thanks to your wife!
Great video, for some reason I keep coming back and watching it over and over... question if I may, have you ever tried Riedel Veloce Syrah (old world design)? Any thoughts? I wonder if it could work well also as a sort of unversal glass
I have been drinking wine for a long time, but I have never paid much attention to the glass. This video has inspired me to get some new ones, based on your test. I hope the WMF glasses are available here in Canada!
Your comment helped me to save almost 200 dollars. I would say that this video is truly a consulting bomb! I bought riedel performance pinot noir rather than Zalto burgundy.
My favourite wine glass is a Bordeaux-style glass of unknown producer 550 ml volume. For me it is an universal glass for red/white wines, not sparkling. Early, I had a some Riedel glass, but one day my wife occasionally pushed it, and it have fallen and broken.😉
This was fascinating,I would really like to see this kind of tasting in Bordeaux glass and white wine glass. It was super surprising to see the best quality glass at your bottom of the tasting
I'm pretty fond of the stölzle lausitz experience series. Fairly cheap everything considered, but really well made and pretty, their performance seems good, but me experience is honestly too limited to tell.
I’ve replaced all of my wine glasses with Gabriel Glas Gold glasses. They are light weight and all of my wines taste really good in them. My wine glass collection used to consist of Riedel Sommeliers (too big & heavy), Riedel Vinum, Riedel Veritas, Zalto (bowl is too tall & ackward for me). Gave glasses away to friends & family, but destroyed the lead crystal ones.
I bought the Riedel Veritas New World Wine Glass and I also saw the Performance version which was about $15 per glass less expensive. I noticed that the base of the bowl on the New World version was flatter. I don't know if it made a difference since I only bought two glasses. I tried to find the WMF Burgundy Glass but looks like in the U.S. it's only available through a restaurant supply and only sold to restaurants.
My favourite glass is riedel veritas new world pinot noir which I use for virtually everything except for sweet wines. Im still looking for a good match for elegant whites such as riesling though.
It is a matter of personal taste which glass you use for which category (sparkling wine, white wine, red wine). In my opinion, you should always use the same glass for each category to make the tastings comparable.
I love my Eisch wine glasses! They are beautiful hand made German glasses! I have red, white, champagne and port. It’s a joy to drink wine from a nice glass! Klaus
I have been enjoying the Gabriel Glas Austrian Crystal Wine "StandArt" Edition. At less than half the price as their Gold Edition, I find them affordable and suitable for most wine styles and varietals.
Hi Konstatin, I love this video. I watch probably all your videos in two day 😁😁Can you recommend me a glass? I usually drink Cabernet and Merlot, you mention the Riedel performance
Thanks for the quick reply! Do you hand wash them or dishwasher? The salesman told me to specifically not hand wash them. But on Google everywhere is advertised to hand wash preferably.😅
For years Riedel Chianti were my preferred option but now I buy supermarket similars as they are infinitely better than anything last century, nice thin glass lips and you don’t need to hold a funeral at the bank when you break one.
Hi! I like your videos very much! You are doing a great job! This was a very interesting video. I also like to taste one wine from 3 different glasses at home. A have ca.50 glasses in my collection. I’d like to ask you to make the same experiment with champagne glasses! Especially I’m interested in a Lehmann Synergies glass and an Arché glass.
Heute kommen meine Riedel Champagner Gläser an🎉. Sag mal in welchem Keller drehst du die Videos und ist das in Deutschland ? Würde gern mehr vom Keller sehen.
Interesting, 2nd view btw. I have the Riedel Pinot Noir Vinum glass as well as the Zalto. Because the best grape variety in the world is of course Riesling, no discussion there. 2nd best grape is highly debated, mine is pinot noir. And for every pinot noir (although the best ones at the moment that doesn't cost you an arm and a leg are the German ones Spätburgunder) bottle that I drink in most (70%) cases Zalto wins for me and the rest the Riedel wins. But you have convinced me that now I should also buy the Riedel Performance pinot noir one. Danke!
Is the performance Pinot noir a good all around glass and good with Cabernets? We drink mostly Cabernet so wanted to see about this. I like the uniqueness of this glass but not sure if I should get the performance Cabernet glass. Thanks
I’m not a Master of Wine or anything, but I’m doing the WSET level 2 course right now, and can definitely recommend it. Unless you’re deep in the industry and have truly above-average knowledge, you're pretty much certain to learn a lot of useful things in it. And then, it’s a prerequisite for level 3, so there’s that too 🤷♂️
I have done WSET 2 and 3 and even though 2 was not very challenging for me I still thought that I learned something on the course. If you can skip and feel like you know most of the material then go ahead and start with 3.
I hoped the Eisch would be tested as well. Especially the sensi plus series. Did you try those? If so, can you recommend them? Thinking about getting some of those. So would be happy to get a opinion of others.
Please tell me the volume for each one of those for the reference? Now, since unvaxed people are discriminated against and entering a store where wine glasses are sold is not an option, buying one online is rather difficult as the volumes like 54cl or 72cl don't explain much, when they are all photographed on a white background with no option to evaluate relative size...
@@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine Looking forward to what you think. In my experience, blows Zalto by a distant mile. It's light and thin but it doesn't break as easy as others. Bordeaux, Pinots, Whites, Rose, it highly versatile.
Why do you use the Riedel Champagne in mostly all of the videos, including for red wine? I actually use this same glass for everything, but I'd like to get a bigger one for red wine.
Could we have the best glass for Syrah-Syrah blends please? That can deliver fruit herds and gamy notes as possible in same level? Wish the best to your new family member!
If you do another tasting could you also test the grassl cru glass? I like it the most and I use it for everything. It would be interesting what you think about it. Cool channel btw und Gruss aus der Schweiz 😊.
I'm watching this video while i drink wine with my only glass. Surprisingly, I haven't broken my ONLY glass though I always wash my glass when i was still drunk! Anyway, I use Spiegelau because i'm still a college senior and this glass is big so i can drink more than others XD!!

Danke!
Thanks for sharing!
Is the performance Pinot noir a good all around glass and good with Cabernets? We drink mostly Cabernet so wanted to see about this. I like the uniqueness of this glass but not sure if I should get the performance Cabernet glass. Thanks
I would use the Performance Cabernet Glass for Cabernets.
Very niiiccee concept!!! Good soundtrack too
Thanks
Mein lieblingsglass ist der Rotweinkelch von der Josephinenhütte!! (No.3)
Hasdt du daraus schon getrunken?
Noch nicht!
What do you think of the Riedel vinum, veritas or extreme Cabernet/burgundy glasses? Have you used any of them and what do you think of them?
I used the vinum and veritas CS and Burg Glasses.
could I maybe ask you what are the sources you use regarding history of wine glasses? Thank you very much in advance for your suggestions!
I prefer a Bordeaux glass, I use a larger glass fish bowl for Pinot noir but that's about all I use.I have two Bordeaux glasses that are very nice.
Bdx glasses are more universally usable.
Riedel Winewings is my favourite one for most red wines, even Bordeaux)
can you do a video on the wine exam? I never heard of it!
Minerality! I couldn't stop laughing. I love your candor. One of the 1855 descendants, I can't remember whom, prefers a small glass.
I usually stick with Reidel glasses, very consistently. I'm not worried about their high-end products, I go for the entry level.
I heavily recommend a company called Grassl. Their burgundy glass has blown me away. Coming from a Riedel user.
Considering skipping WSET 2 and just studying for WSET 3. Do you know if this is a bad idea? What route did you take to becoming a master of wine?
I’m not a Master of Wine or anything, but I’m doing the WSET level 2 course right now, and can definitely recommend it. Unless you’re deep in the industry and have truly above-average knowledge, you're pretty much certain to learn a lot of useful things in it.
And then, it’s a prerequisite for level 3, so there’s that too 🤷♂️
I have done WSET 2 and 3 and even though 2 was not very challenging for me I still thought that I learned something on the course. If you can skip and feel like you know most of the material then go ahead and start with 3.
Conterno Sensory for everything except sparkling in Gabriel-Glas Golds
Denver and Liely have just released a glass for ~$125euro!!! The design is unique and beautiful tho. Could you please do a review in the future 🙏
I hoped the Eisch would be tested as well. Especially the sensi plus series. Did you try those? If so, can you recommend them?
Thinking about getting some of those. So would be happy to get a opinion of others.
I have never tried them - there are so many glasses available today!
I love my Gabriel Glas Gold Edition, have outperformed many other more popular brands or dedicated Bordeaux/Burgundy glass
The Gabriel Glas will be tested in my next test.
@@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine Looking forward to what you think. In my experience, blows Zalto by a distant mile. It's light and thin but it doesn't break as easy as others. Bordeaux, Pinots, Whites, Rose, it highly versatile.
What was the tall wide tulip champagne glass in the beginning of the video? I need that!!!
Personal preference but I like the large glasses with a fully round base with no angles.
Been using the Reidel performance for quite a while
Why do you use the Riedel Champagne in mostly all of the videos, including for red wine? I actually use this same glass for everything, but I'd like to get a bigger one for red wine.
Could we have the best glass for Syrah-Syrah blends please? That can deliver fruit herds and gamy notes as possible in same level? Wish the best to your new family member!
I like the Riedel Performance Syrah Glass
I use winewings champagne for everything! The best glass out there
If you do another tasting could you also test the grassl cru glass? I like it the most and I use it for everything. It would be interesting what you think about it.
Cool channel btw und Gruss aus der Schweiz 😊.
Can you do a Bordeaux glass test? Thx I love the zalto but want to be sure
It is good for me to include Riedel Sommeliers glass in PN blind tasting. Thanks!
Yes, I could not include all glasses and I already had 2 Riedel glasses in the tasting.
I'm watching this video while i drink wine with my only glass.
Surprisingly, I haven't broken my ONLY glass though I always wash my glass when i was still drunk!
Anyway, I use Spiegelau because i'm still a college senior and this glass is big so i can drink more than others XD!!
Nice work! What do you do if you have a visitor over?
@@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine I will serve my visitor good wine, and i will take great one in my bigger glass XD
But i will cook greater dish for my guest
What kind of glass is the Bordeaux, is it a Reidel performance?
