I am still impressed that Fignon without an aero helmet and without TT bars lost only 58 sec on Greg Lemond,Lemond also had a vo2max of 90.
A real shame he didnt at least wear an aero helmet
But for Lemond if he didnt have the hunting accident he wdve had 5 tdf wins as well as at least another world champs

In 1986 when Greg won his first TDF he had the 2nd highest Vo2 max reading of any athlete in the world. Only a kenyan marathoner tested higher than him. Greatness is hard races like the tour is seen early. Lemond placed 3rd, 2nd and finally won in 1986. Lance when he rode his first tours did not even finish and was a mid packer in his early years. You don't go from the middle of the peloton to winning without assistance.

Fortunately if you look up the all-time records for VO2 max Greg Lemond is at 92.5 and Lance Armstrong is down there at 84. This would be consistent with Lance's Tour de France finishes before he started using EPO. It''s in David Walsh's book "Seven Deadly Sins." His best finish was 36th. David Walsh said Greg Lemond was 3rd, then 2nd, then won, which is what you expect, consistency, in a non-doper.

GL was a freak, apparently with the highest VO2 ever recorded - heard there is a norwegian cc skier who's is higher (dahlie (sp?)? - he was busted for EPO too). No doubt GL could have won it at least 6 times in a row if he hadn't been shot and was on an american team in 85. Still to win it 7 times in a row - when all your competition was also doped - is a superhuman achievement.

  • @raymondmenz522

Ive got a cycling book written by Lemond. He says his VO2 max was 83. He said he lied about his VO2 max because he knew Armstrong had added 10 to his - so he did the same thing.
Armstrongs coach has since admitted that Armstrongs VO2 max was 78. Prior to 1990 the highest known VO2 max was 85. Also no pro tour cyclist had recorded 80 or over.
VO2 max figures vary greatly on how it is measured, where it is measured and by who. The VO2 max figure is only good for looking at any trend by the athlete. It has never been used as a predictor of success. Derek Clayton (Australia) held the world record for the marathon in 1968 of 2hrs 8 minutes. His VO2 max was 64. I have come across many club runners and cyclists whose VO2 max is said to be 80 or more. The VO2 max figure is a measure of nothing. The only predictor of success is someone who is already winning.
It doesnt matter how you train, what you eat, whose your coach - you have to put it onto the road. I knew a gold medal Olympic sprinter whose squat was half of mine.
Please stop - When Armstrong joined the pro tour. He was considered to be the best one day rider in the world. I along with many others thought that Armstrong could win up to 3 or more TdF.
Who if anyone though Chris Froome could ever win a TdF? No One!
Im no fan of Armstrong and I admired Lemond's 10 year stand against doping. But he won a tour coming back from a serious gun shot injury????
His blood test prior to the 89 tour was so bad he should never have been allowed to start. The 2 blood tested taken during the 89 tour clearly show Lemond was doping. Unfortunately the security on the blood tests was so bad these could easily have been contaminated or swapped. Has anyone come out and said he was doping? No One.
The idea that Merckx was clean is laughable.

Gotta say, this is the only bike vid I've seen in recent memory with any decent music. man now I want a brooks saddle and move to Seattle Washingtonvery in depth documentary, worth every second What do you think about that ?You are not alone. :)I just started riding a bike again, I have literally no knowledge on them other than they have two wheels and goes forward when i pedal. I just watched this video and am now confused and worried as hell. How often do problems like the ones described in the video occur? I don't have the money to take my bike to a shop all the time to have this stuff done, nor the tools. I'm hoping after watching it again I can do some of this myself but am still worried about the frequency of these issues and how I will figure out if something is wrong. What do you think about that ?Are those drop handlebars or moustache type at 16:25 - 16:30 or so?They are both thinking about how difficult it would be to have sex with each other.Blood Sweat and Gears Part 1 of 7My personal inner city ride is something I wish I had when I was a courier.A light weight 92 Rocky Mountain Team Comp with Tange Ultimate Ultralight tubing, a triple butted Kona P2 fork 8 speed with Suntour Thumb shifters and XTR V brakes on Mavic Cross rides with 1.1" Michelin slicks. Why is it good for city? Its both light and strong and the 26" wheels both spin up and stop quickly, especially with V brakes-I stop on a dime. The geo is both fast and stable and being lower, I can flick it about very easily, and I can jump curbs and hit stairs without worrying about bending a wheel. The gearing is also great for city with an 11-28 and a 46 big ring, I can go plenty fast enough. I get some weird looks from the fixie crowd though. not getting any cool points but old school messengers give it props.Hahaha, the intro is killing me! That guy looks 15 years old!

Why not legalize doping just like do it at your own risk. If this happens we will be seeing monsters on bike reaching ave. spd. of 60-70 kph. This will erase all the doubts and criticism cyclists get. Look what happened to Pantani, Landis, Contador and now Armstrong, etc. Just to give Cycling freewheel it's not boxing anyhow.Wild opinion and why not?

David Walsh spending the season with Team Sky, and saying he believes from what he has seen they ride clean. Sky handing over Froomes data for public scrutiny. David Millars recent comments about Sky... Can't be 100% but its looking good for Sky riding clean this season ans this Tour De France. People will allways come up with reasons not to accept it but... In my opinion its looking good for Sky and good for Cycling.

Exactly. So we are supposed to believe a guy who was shot was able to come back and win the Tour De France? Even Lemond himself said, "he just happened to feel good for those 3 weeks"

Greg didn't dope. He even waged a war against Lance and his doping regime.

Well it has been said that the "great" Eddy Merckx did partake in doping such as high caffeine, amphetimines and something else I can't think of at the top of my head.
